May 12, 2019 Fourth Sunday of Easter

Welcome Welcome Welcome Reflections:

Crushed

I had the opportunity to give a small talk to our first communion classes a few weeks ago

and we were focusing on the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. One of the little boys

raised his hand and said, “I don’t think the bread changes into Jesus’ body.” I thought to myself

how do I respond to such a statement of faith? And as I only had a few seconds to respond I

said a little prayer that my words might help to share God’s mystery of the Eucharist.

“That is a really interesting statement,” I said. “That is a stumbling block, something that trips people

up, when it comes to our faith as Catholics. It’s an idea that people have thought about for thousands of

years.” So I began to ask the kids if things change in the natural world and we discovered that there are many

things that change. A caterpillar changes into a butterfly, wheat changes into bread, grapes are transformed

into wine and cells change into people. We don’t always understand how, but we know that they change be-

cause we see them change. The hard thing for us as Christians is to understand is that not all changes are

visible or perceivable. So what are we to do? I have a suggestion to offer – trust that what Jesus said is hon-

est and true.

Jesus did not say that the bread at the last supper was merely bread, but his body. That same body

that was alive would be crushed and transformed through the resurrection. He did not say that the wine re-

sembled his blood, but that it was his blood. The same blood that would be shed for the salvation of the world

and so I choose to believe that what Jesus says is true. I can’t and don’t always understand fully the mystery

of God truly present in the Eucharist – but I believe because I trust in Jesus and know his words to be true.

This is a gift of faith, one we can marvel at and yet not fully comprehend. I ask God to help my faith and to

make me humble so that when presented with Jesus in the Eucharist I can, with faith, respond - Amen (I be-

lieve it is so).

God Bless,

Deacon Chris

St. Patrick’s Global Mission Team:

“Pick-a-Number” Fundraiser!

Pick-a-Number is a simple and easy way to become a part of our parish’s

second global mission — a service trip to Haiti in June.

You don’t need to go anywhere…You don’t need get dressed up…or do much of anything else!

The bulletin board at the main entrance is filled with colorful, numbered envelopes. You are invited to “pick a number” and use that envelope to make a contribution for at least the amount of the number on the envelope. We encourage you to pick a number that is meaningful to you… a birthday, the year you were born, an anniversary, your age, address or your favorite athlete’s number… anything that is special to you! Take the envelope with you and use it to make your contribution. (Details are included inside of every self-addressed envelope.) Your donation will help to: buy building materials for a modest home in Grand Goâve, Haiti; pay the local workers who ensure that our team of amateurs gets the job done right; provide funds to the orphan-age where we will stay; and help get the group there and back safe-ly. Thank you for your prayers and support of this important service mission!
