FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 2, 2018
The Living Nativity
On Saturday, December 8th and Sunday, December 9th, Mesa Farm will reenact the birth of
Jesus. Volunteer actors, singers and live animals will bring to life the true meaning of Christmas. There will be two shows each day at 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Mesa Farm is located at 67 Muschopauge Road in Rutland. Admission is free, but please bring a plate of cookies to share after the performance. Also, there will be an opportunity to make a voluntary donation to Mesa Farm’s City to Saddle program that
allows underprivileged and special needs children to experience horse riding and farming at Mesa Farm. In the hustle and bustle of the season, this is a great opportunity to spend an hour watching the story of
the true meaning of Christmas. The peacefulness of the evening may just very well carry through Christmas day.
Please keep our 32 candidates for Confirmation in your prayers this weekend as
they receive their third Sacrament of Initiation.
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
On December 8 and 9, our parishes will be conducting the appeal for the Retirement Fund for Religious, a
national collection that benefits nearly 31,000 elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests who are
members of 547 religious institutes throughout the country. The sad reality is that only 23 of those
communities are adequately funded to care for their elderly and infirm members who have consecrated their
lives to serving God and the Church.
During the 2018 World Day for Consecrated Life, Pope Francis remarked, “There is no growth without roots
and no flowering without new buds.” This analogy has certainly born out within the life of the Church in the
United States. Senior religious were the roots that established Catholic schools, hospitals, and social service
agencies—allowing generations of Catholics to flourish. Today the example of older religious inspires
younger members to persevere in mission and ministry.
Just as our annual Celebrate Priesthood event helps our diocese to care for its retired diocesan priests, this
national collection assists many religious communities which struggle to provide for aging members. Most
elder religious served for small stipends, leaving a large gap in retirement savings. Rising health-care costs
and decreased income compound the struggle to provide adequate care. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for
Religious provides vital funding for medications, nursing care, and more. It also helps religious congregations
implement long-range retirement strategies, even as they continue to serve the People of God.
I recognize this is but one of numerous worthy causes in need of assistance; I ask simply that you give what
you can. In thanksgiving for their faithful service, please join me in supporting the Retirement Fund for
Religious and in praying for God’s blessing on our nation’s elderly religious.
With prayerful best wishes, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus

Online Giving: Thank you to those who have continued to donate on line
using our new provider and to those who have recently
signed on. The benefit of online giving to the parish is
enormous. One benefit is that it provides a consistent
source of revenue to the parish. If you manage your bills
online, you know you like the convenience of giving to
the parish on line. It is safe and secure, and you decide
exactly when you gift is made and where it goes. You can
even view your giving history and pledge progress at any
time, just by logging in. Please visit our website at
www.stpatricksrutland.org or visit us on Facebook to get
started or to access your existing account.
Calling anyone that likes to sing! The adult choir is looking for more members. All talent levels welcome - we’re not professionals but parishioners that just like to sing.
The choir provides music at the 10:30 Sunday masses, Christmas Eve and Easter services as well as most other holy days. Rehearsals are held at the church on Thursday evenings. If interested, stop up in the choir loft after any mass to provide your name and phone number.
We know there are many that like to sing as we can hear all those good voices rising up to the choir loft. Won’t you please consider sharing your voice?

THE SIGN OF PEACE DURING COLD AND FLU SEASON:
Please don’t be offended if someone chooses not to shake hands with you during the Sign of Peace. An appropriate gesture for those who are concerned about spreading the flu virus might be to strive for eye contact rather than physical contact. You could bow gently to those around you, and with a simple wave and smile say “Peace be with you,”
