One would think that the calming of a storm would be a simple action on the part of Jesus. It is this same care and compassion that Jesus shows in todays Gospel passage [Mark 5:21-43], not only once, but twice. Firstly, Jesus is approached by Jairus, the synagogue official who pleads with him to come and cure his daughter who is desperately sick[v. 23]. He would be wanting Jesus to hurry up and attend to his sick daughter before her health deteriorated even more. Through this interruption we come to a realisation that Jesus is the one in control of matters, not others. This episode becomes yet another teaching on the importance and centrality of faith in the life of the disciple, as Jesus proclaims of the woman: My daughter, your faith has restored you to health[v.34]. Jairusfaith is tested to its limits as people come up to him and rather coldly announce that his daughter had died, and therefore there was no more need for Jesuspresence [v. 35]. Again Jesus responds with an invitation to move from fear to faith as he says: do not be afraid, only have faith[v.36]. His call to faith is met with ridicule on the part of the people who have gathered to mourn the death of the young child. In the face of all this Jesus takes the child by the hand and brings her back to life. Both of these stories – the healing of the woman with the flow of blood [Mark 5:2-34] and the raising of the daughter of Jairus [Mark 5;32-24.35-43] tell us what happens when we have faith in Jesus. The womans faith broke through the prejudice of the time: she risked everything – even socially alienating Jesus if it was discovered that she, a woman who was ritually unclean because of her condition had touched Jesus. Her faith was stronger than her fear. Jairus too did not react to the hard news of his daughters death, but seems to draw strength from the encouraging words of Jesus: do not be afraid, only have faith!Faith is the one and only response that Jesus asks of us, even in the face of death. Like the disciples who thought that they were not only going to perish in that huge storm, and who believed that Jesus did not care about their situation, we too can find ourselves giving way to anxiety, fear and anger when elements in our lives seem to go a little astray, rather than holding onto faith, when we experience difficult and life-threatening situations. We are challenged to live out a faith that is tempered by humility. We experience this type of faith in todays Gospel when both Jairus and the woman fall at the feet of Jesus and plead with him. Prayer, openness to the Scriptures, having a good spiritual mentor or guide are ways in which this type of faith can be strengthened and deepened, so that when we experience those difficult moments, we can allow our fear and anger to turn into faith in Jesus the giver of eternal life. Sunday, 1 July 2018 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

From the Dean’s Desk

Dear Friends,

In an episode prior to today’s Gospel

we hear one of the disciples ask of

Jesus as their boat was being pounded

by a storm with their lives in danger:

‘Lord, do you not care? We are lost!’[Mark 4:39]. It

seems an unreal question to ask of Jesus since they

had previously experienced him reaching out to

people with compassion as he cured so many people

with different types of physical and spiritual ailments

[Mark 1:21-27; 29-34; 2:1-12; 3:1-6]. One would

think that the calming of a storm would be a simple

action on the part of Jesus.

It is this same care and compassion that Jesus shows

in today’s Gospel passage [Mark 5:21-43], not only

once, but twice. Firstly, Jesus is approached by

Jairus, the synagogue official who pleads with him to

come and cure his daughter who is ‘desperately

sick’ [v. 23]. Jesus agrees to the man’s request and

follows him to his home. His journey is interrupted

when he looks for the person among the huge crowd

who touched him – as he felt power gone out from him

[v. 30]. Finally a woman who had been ill for twelve

years admits to having touched his cloak. One could

imagine the frustration of Jairus as this episode is

being played out in front of him. He would be wanting

Jesus to hurry up and attend to his sick daughter

before her health deteriorated even more. Through

this interruption we come to a realisation that Jesus is

the one in control of matters, not others. This episode

becomes yet another teaching on the importance and

centrality of faith in the life of the disciple, as Jesus

proclaims of the woman: ‘My daughter, your faith

has restored you to health’ [v.34].

Jairus’ faith is tested to its limits as people come up to

him and rather coldly announce that his daughter had

died, and therefore there was no more need for Jesus’

presence [v. 35]. Again Jesus responds with an

invitation to move from fear to faith as he says: ‘do

not be afraid, only have faith’ [v.36]. His call to faith

is met with ridicule on the part of the people who have

gathered to mourn the death of the young child. In the

face of all this Jesus takes the child by the hand and

brings her back to life.

Both of these stories – the healing of the woman with the flow of blood [Mark 5:2-34] and the raising of the daughter of Jairus [Mark 5;32-24.35-43] tell us what happens when we have faith in Jesus. The woman’s faith broke through the prejudice of the time: she risked everything – even socially alienating Jesus if it was discovered that she, a woman who was ritually unclean because of her condition had touched Jesus. Her faith was stronger than her fear. Jairus too did not react to the hard news of his daughter’s death, but seems to draw strength from the encouraging words of Jesus: ‘do not be afraid, only have faith!’ Faith is the one and only response that Jesus asks of us, even in the face of death. We experience this type of faith in today’s Gospel when both Jairus and the woman fall at the feet of Jesus and plead with him. Prayer, openness to the Scriptures, having a good spiritual mentor or guide are ways in which this type of faith can be strengthened and deepened, so that when we experience those difficult moments, we can allow our fear and anger to turn into faith in Jesus the giver of eternal life.

We are already putting out feelers for this event for 2019. If you have any connections to an organisation/company that may be interested in a full/part sponsorship, please give details to the Parish Office. Thank you.

Rest in Peace Please keep Michael Axiak (Seminarian) in your prayers. Michael’s mum Annette Axiak passed away this week.
