HOLY YEAR OF MERCY

CHRISTMAS 2015

SUN. YOUTH MASS & FAMILY ACTIVITY

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

May the peace of this Christmas season

be with all of you! One of the traditional

images of Christmas that readily comes

to our minds is the star, shining brightly

above the manger where Jesus was laid.

The thought of light dispelling the

darkness brings a sense of happiness.

We only need to drive around on

Christmas Eve and see houses lit up in

colorful displays to realize how light has

a way of lifting our spirits. Christ Jesus

came into our world to be the light of the

human race, as the beginning of John’s

Gospel proclaims. No matter what the

coming year may bring, it is my hope

that each of us may find comfort in

knowing that the light of God’s Love

shines in our hearts.

With my best wishes for a joyous and

Merry Christmas, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend John R. Gaydos

Bishop of Jefferson City

A Jubilee Year involves pilgrimage to a Holy site. Many

will travel to Rome during this Holy Year of Mercy. But

still more will not be able to do so. St. Patrick Church at

The National Shrine of Mary, Mother of God has been

designated a pilgrimage site in our Diocese. During the

coming year we will open our doors and our hearts to

welcome these many pilgrims.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

St. John of Kanty ( 1390-1473)- December 23

was a Polish priest, scholastic philosopher, physicist,

and a theologian. He was born in Poland. After gradu-

ating from the Kraków Academy, John taught philoso-

phy while preparing for the priesthood. He was a pro-

fessor of theology and spent many hours copying man-

uscripts of the Holy Scriptures. John became well

known for his generosity and compassion toward the

poor, especially needy students. He subsisted on what

was strictly necessary to sustain his life. He made four

pilgrimages to Rome, carrying his luggage on his back.

He slept little, ate sparingly, and took no meat. He was

a typical Saint: kind, humble, and generous. May we

realize as he did that "what kind of work can be more

noble than to cultivate the minds of young people so

that the love of God and his Holy precepts go hand-in-

FOR THOSE THAT COULD NOT

ATTEND OUR PENANCE SERVICE, THERE

WILL BE RECONCILIATION

MON. DEC. 21st & TUES. DEC. 22ND

BEFORE (8:30) AND AFTER 9:00 Mass

Come and welcome the Lord with a heart free of

sin and filled with praise. Plan to celebrate this

sacrament as preparation for Christmas.

THE PRESENT OF PRESENCE

God sent a present into the world, the Gift of loving

presence named Jesus. The gospel stories indicate that

Jesus gave few material things to people. What he gave

most was his personal presence, gift that were treasures

of the heart: belief in self, inner healing, peace of mind,

compassion, forgiveness, dignity, and justice.

Like Jesus, we can give from our inner abundance, gifts

from the heart. Moments lovingly spent with another

through prayer or through personal presence carry more

beauty and have more endurance than anything material

we could give.

Advent is a good season to be more deliberate in sharing

the present of our presence every day. It may be

through a phone call, letter, a visit, or through the bond-

ing of prayer as we focus love and attention toward

those who need the strength of God to be with them.
