Gift Of Stewardship

GOSPEL MEDITATION

ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

"There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it [he] found none." We live in a results-driven society. It can be easy to put pressure on ourselves to succeed. If we're not keeping up with the perceived "good life" of those around us, we feel anxious and disappointed. Some of the Gospel stories about fruitful-ness can seem to play out in this fashion. "For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. So cut it down." The message seems to be clear. Abide in God and bear fruit! Stand apart from God and be barren. But what happens when we're trying, but the growth we wanted doesn't seem to be coming our way? What if it feels like life just isn't bearing fruit?

This Sunday, Jesus gives us a sign of hope. "[The gardener] said to him in reply, 'Sir, leave it for this year also ? it may bear fruit in the future." How quick we can be to judge! Perhaps you started out Lent with high hopes and big ideas for getting closer to God. Maybe things haven't gone exactly like you thought. It can be easy to lose patience with our failures or slow growth. We shouldn't be too quick to assume that God has given up on us. He hasn't.

The same ideas apply to those around us. Perhaps we're the planter of the fig tree. We expect a certain amount of growth from someone in our life, and they just aren't measuring up. Let today's Gospel be a gentle nudge for mercy. As Lent con-tinues to unfold, be patient with yourself and those around you. Wait for God to provide the growth.

St. Paul's Easter Food Basket Ministry provides a

full Easter dinner to needy families in our community. Last year, thanks to the wonderful generosity of the parishioners of St. Paul, 37 families received baskets. Before and after Mass on the weekends of March 23-24, March 30-31 and April 6-7, volunteers will be in the gathering space to collect food and money for this year's Easter Food Basket minis-try. We are seeking the following:

Boxes of scalloped potatoes (regular or cheesy)

Cans of yams

Cans of pineapple (not crushed)

Cans of green beans (string-bean style preferred)

Cans of mushroom soup

French fried onion rings

Easter candy

Easter egg dye kits Cash donations to buy hams, rolls, butter, eggs and pies. Thank you in advance for your donations in support of this ministry!

ALMSGIVING FOR LENT HELP PROVIDE CLEAN WATER TO PERU

Envelopes provided in the pews during Lent can be used to make a donation which will help to provide clean water to families living in Peru. Checks payable to St. Paul Parish. Walk the Labyrinth on Good Friday

You are invited to walk the labyrinth in St Paul’s gym right before or right after the Good Friday service at St Paul. The labyrinth is a very old way of praying while you walk. Praying the labyrinth is a way to get closer to Jesus. You can think of it as taking a walk with God or with Jesus. While you walk, you might think about what Jesus wants

you to do, how he wants you to live. While you are walking in, you can think of what you need to leave behind. What things in your life keep you from being close to God? When you reach the center, you might just sit or stand and rest for a few minutes. Listen and feel for God's presence within you. What do you want to say to Jesus? Then

you simply follow the path back out. On the way out you might think about what Jesus wants you to do in your life. Is God calling you to help a certain person or be kinder in a special way? This can be a beautiful, silent, reflective time with our Lord, please come and see: Good Friday, April 19, times: 11:45-12:45 and 2-3:30.

Easter Vigil: Join in us celebrating with our RCIA group as they receive sacraments for the first time Saturday, April 20, at St Paul.

Attend Men of Christ Conference see separate article in bulletin.

Quiet time: Redemptorist Retreat Center (www.redemptoristretreat.org). Give yourself (or your spouse or anyone else!) the gift of a

silent weekend away. Retreats are scheduled regularly, see the web-site.

Family or alone time: FORMED.org LOADED with resources!! (parish code 274255). Check it out! Movies, podcasts and books.

Daily Lenten reflections delivered right to your email inbox, here are just a few: Everyday Stewardship by Tracy Welliver from LPi (our bulletin company), Matthew Kelly/Dynamic Catholic, and Bish-op Robert Barron/Word on Fire. (do internet search to find others)

Scripture followed by Stations of the Cross Join us on Friday nights before Stations of the Cross if you want to hear how God speaks to you directly through Scripture. In Christianity, Lectio Divina (Latin for "Divine Reading") is a traditional Benedictine practice of scriptural reading, meditation, and prayer intended to promote communion with God and to increase the knowledge of God's word. Lectio Divina will begin at 5:30pm, followed by Stations of the Cross at 6pm.

Please note the schedule: March 29 St Paul 5:30pm, Stations at 6pm April 5 St Bruno 5:30pm Lectio, Stations 6pm April 12 St Paul 5:30pm, Stations at 6pm

LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE REGULATIONS

The Catholic church asks each member to preserve the penitential character and purpose of Lent. For this reason:

A) Catholics who have celebrated their 14th birthday are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and each Friday of Lent;

B) Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, in addition to abstaining from meat, should fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Hence, on those days they should eat only one full meal. Smaller quantities of food may be taken at two other meals, but no food should be consumed at other times during those two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. The obligation of fasting ceases with the celebration of one’s 59th birthday.

Catholics should not lightly excuse themselves from these pre-

scribed minimal penitential practices.

Pray the ROSARY before daily mass Monday, and Friday, after daily mass Tuesday Reconciliation is offered: First/Third Saturdays, 3pm at St Bruno OR Second/Fourth Saturdays, 10am at St Paul OR by appointment, call the parish office.

SEASONAL REFLECTION

A Prayer to Be Open to God's Will Good and gracious God,

I know that life can be unpredictable. Sometimes I know what is good and right,

but I don't have the courage to do it. Sometimes I am so busy with my own affairs,

I forget to see the needs of people in front of me. Sometimes I am set in my own ways,

and I resist growing and learning. Help me, Lord, to be open to Your will.

When You prompt me to do the right thing, give me the courage to do it.

When those around me need my help, give me Your heart to love them. When I'm stuck in my own ways,

give me the grace to grow closer to You every day. Give me the trust and confidence of Mary.

Let it be done unto me according to Your word! Amen.

Get connected to our POWER!

Thank you to those of you who have been joining us for Mass, Stations of the Cross, or our Parish Fish Fry. We are in a special season and enjoy the opportunities when we are able to pray togeth-er as a community. On Friday each student and staff member had the opportunity to attend Reconciliation. As we continue through our Lenten promises, it is always nice to take time and reflect on how we are doing. Reconciliation offers us that opportunity.

The readings last Friday stood out to me as I reflected on my own Lenten journey.

If you bring your gift to the altar and there recall that your brother [or sister] has anything against you,

leave your gift… go first and be reconciled with your brothers [and sisters,]

then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:24

We ended the first full week of Lent conscious of the many diverse communities to which we belong: our families, our schools, our par-ishes, our nation, and our world. We’re also aware of the disagree-ments, hurts, grudges, and fears that can block our efforts to relate and minister effectively with each of these as people of the Gospel. I reflected on where I might need to pause, lay down my tasks, and seek reconciliation for pains I have caused or wrongs I have done. I ask you to do the same. Who might need to hear us say, “I’m sorry?” At all times and in all ways, throughout these Lenten days, we give thanks for the amazing grace of God.

Know that as a school community we are praying for all of you and ask that you continue to pray for us. Please join us if you are able for our weekly Mass and/or our weekly Stations of the Cross.
