News & Notes from Sondra Norder, President
I n s i d e t h i s i s s u e :
2018 is here, and we couldn’t be more excited. Not only did we have an incredibly successful year in 2017 from which to continue to build on, but we have some pretty exciting events and milestones happening this year as well.
The first of such events comes in March, when a group of our leadership staff will head to Washington DC to the LeadingAge (national) Great Minds Gala, where we will be presented with the Excellence in Dementia Care award for
2018. LeadingAge is the “trade association” that we belong to, which represents non-profit senior living and health care providers across the country, with over 6,000 members nationwide. Each year, they hold a leadership summit in Washington DC, and the Great Minds Gala is held in conjunction. The Great Minds Gala centers around issues related to dementia care, and honors an organization that has created programming that addresses known challenges or service gaps for those living with dementia and their loved ones, has measurable performance outcomes or indicators, and has the potential for replication by other aging services organizations. Our “Passages” program was nominated for this award, and we were notified that we were receiving the award in December.
Led by Becky Reichelt, our Chief Operating Officer and in-house dementia care expert, as well as Keri Schreiter, our Manager of Outreach Services, and Julie Feil, our Memory Clinic Social Worker and Memory Care Resource Center Coordinator, Passages is comprised of our Memory Clinic at the Neuroscience Group, our Memory Cafes, Memory Connections, Memory Gym, and Memory Care Support Groups provided within the Hoffman Memory Care Resource Center, our dementia care community, training and education series, our adult day services program (Club Gabriel), our memory care assisted living facility (St. Paul Manor), and our memory care skil led nursing neighborhoods (Appletree Court and Poppy Path). Passages has become a comprehensive portfolio of memory care services, aimed at serving individuals living with

dementia and their caregivers, at whatever place they call home and whatever stage they are at in the disease process. The success of our Passages programming, which was persuasive to the Excellence in Dementia Care award committee, has been measured by staggering growth year over year in our Passages programs, extremely low usage of antipsychotic medications with residents within our residential settings, increased access to supportive services for family caregivers, and high turnout at community educational events.
We are thrilled yet humbled to be honored with this award, as we simply feel that we are doing what’s right and what the community needs. But we will gratefully accept this award on behalf of our incredibly hardworking associates who give so much of their lives to enriching the lives of those we serve. We look forward to sharing the press release, photos, video, and other highlights from this event with all of you.
Beyond what will be an exciting spring for us in light of the Passages award, we look forward to September, during which we will celebrate SPES’ 75th anniversary! In 1943, the Bishop of the Green Bay Diocese asked the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity to use a mansion that was donated by a benefactor in Kaukauna to use as a Home for the Aged. The Franciscan Sisters accepted that call, and the SPES mission was born. Over the past 75 years, we have continued to answer the call, developing diverse and unique services based upon the needs identified within the community. During this diamond anniversary year, we are poised for continued growth, both in capacity and in geographic reach, largely because this community continues to support our efforts to provide for the needs of older adults. We are just beginning to plan the celebrations that will mark this milestone year, but the excitement is building! We look forward to sharing our plans with all of you.
Cheers to what we know will be an exciting 75th anniversary year for SPES!

Annual Appeal Thank You
The 2017 Annual Appeal was a tremendous success; it was our second highest total amount raised in the history of the Annual Appeal, with over $96,000 in contributions! It is so apparent that you, our generous contributors, believe in our mission, to enrich the life experiences of those we serve. With your support this year, we can continue to do more, serve more, and reach more. More fairly healthy folks who want to remain independent in their own homes, but have no means to pay for supportive services. More persons living with dementia whose quality of life could improve if they could afford adult day services. More of the sick and vulnerable who need residential care, but have nowhere else to turn. And we are so excited about our ability to carry out the healing ministry of Jesus Christ in such ever expanding ways. It would not be possible though without your support and generosity. God Bless all who donated during the 2017 Annual Appeal and throughout the remainder of the year. Together, we are fulfilling our mission!

Farewell, Tom Verhagen
In December, we honored Tom Verhagen as he finished out his third and final terms on the SPES Board of Directors, six years of which he served as the Chair of the Board.
Over those years, Tom has been a stellar Board Chair. He has given countless hours and great energy to guiding our strategies, supporting our initiatives, analyzing our opportunities, monitoring our operations, and developing our executive team. Tom’s personal experiences with our services here at SPES have given him unique insight, his understanding of this community have given him great credibility, and his business acumen has given him sound judgment as we have waded through our challenges, as well as good reason to celebrate our successes. He has left a lasting impact on this organization and our mission, and we are forever indebted to him for his selfless service.
On behalf of the staff, residents, and volunteers of St. Paul Elder Services, its entire Board of Directors, and the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, we thank Tom for his service to and belief in our mission and ask God’s bless-ings upon him and his family!
Sondra Norder, President & CEO and Tom Verhagen
Welcome! Welcome, Pat Hietpas
We are pleased to share that Mr. Pat Hietpas has been elected to fill the Board position left open by Tom Verhagen’s retirement. Pat is a Little Chute native and is an accomplished business leader, serving as the President of US AutoForce here in the Fox Valley. Pat is dedicated to serving the community and living out his Catholic Faith. We are blessed to have someone of his caliber and character joining our Board.
Welcome to Our New Leadership Team Members
We are pleased to welcome Linda Van Bommel, RN, as our new Clinical Coordinator for our Center of Rehabilitation. Linda comes to us with an extensive background in nursing leadership within skilled nursing facilities, most recently serving as the Director of Nursing at Rennes Health and Rehabilitation in Appleton.
We are also pleased to welcome Jodi Hage, MSW, LCSW, as our new Manager for St. Paul Manor. Jodi comes to us with an impressive long-term care background as well, most recently serving as the Director of Social Services at Oakridge Gardens in Menasha, and previously as a Social Worker with Community Care, Inc. We are so glad that Linda and Jodi have joined us, and we look forward to their contributions to our mission for years to come!
