MORNING PRAYER & SERMON

Page numbers refer to the Book of Common Prayer (BCP).

OPENING SENTENCES Officiant Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:2

The hour is coming and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him. John 4:23

EXHORTATION BCP, page 79 Officiant Dearly beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our

heavenly Father, to set forth his praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness by his infinite goodness and mercy.

Silence is kept for a space; then all say together

CONFESSION OF SIN BCP, page 79 Officiant Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought,

word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Priest alone stands and says

Officiant Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

People Amen.

THE INVITATORY & PSALTER

PRECES & GLORIA PATRI BCP, page 80 Officiant Lord, open our lips. People And our mouth shall show forth your praise. ALL Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

PSALM 103 Taizé

Please sing the refrain after the Cantor Cantor It is he who forgives all your guilt, who heals everyone of your ills, who redeems your life from the grave, who crowns you with love and compassion Refrain

Cantor The Lord is compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. He does not treat us according to our sins nor repay us according to our faults. Refrain

Cantor As a father has compassion on his children, the Lord has pity on those who fear him; for he knows of what we are made, he remembers that we are but dust. Refrain

PSALM 145 Exaltabo te, Deus BCP, page 803 8 The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, * slow to anger and of great kindness. 9 The Lord is loving to everyone * and his compassion is over all his works. 10 All your works praise you, O Lord, * and your faithful servants bless you. 11 They make known the glory of your kingdom * and speak of your power; 12 That the peoples may know of your power * and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. 13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom; * your dominion endures throughout all ages. 14 The Lord is faithful in all his words * and merciful in all his deeds.

15 The Lord upholds all those who fall; * he lifts up those who are bowed down. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *

and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, * and will be for ever. Amen.

THE LESSONS

FIRST LESSON Romans 6:12-23 Reader A reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans. Therefore, do not let sin

exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

FIRST SONG OF ISAIAH BCP, page 86 Isaiah 12:2-6 1 Surely, it is God who saves me; * I will trust in him and not be afraid. 2 For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, * and he will be my Savior. 3 Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing * from the springs of salvation.

4 And on that day you shall say, * Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name; 5 Make his deeds known among the peoples; * see that they remember that his Name is exalted. 6 Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, * and this is known in all the world. 7 Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, * for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, *

and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, * and will be for ever. Amen.

SECOND LESSON Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30 Reader A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew. [Jesus said,] “To what will

I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”...At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

ARIA ‘Messiah’, George Frideric Handel sung by Mara Adler O’Kelly

He shall feed His flock like a shepherd; and He shall gather the lambs with His arm,

and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.

Come unto Him, all ye that labor, come unto Him that are heavy laden,

and He will give you rest. Take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him,

for He is meek and lowly of heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

— Isaiah 40:11, Matthew 11:28-29

A GENERAL THANKSGIVING BCP, page 836 ALL Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have done for us.

We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side.

We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us.

We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone.

Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom.

Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know Christ and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen.

A PRAYER OF ST CHRYSOSTOM BCP, page 102 Officiant Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make

our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting.

People Amen.

HYMN LIFT EV’RY VOICE Text: James Weldon Johnson, 1900 Tune: J. Rosamund Johnson, 1905

LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING, Till earth and heaven ring,

Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise high as the list’ning skies,

Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.

STONY THE ROAD WE TROD, Bitter the chast’ning rod,

Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet

Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered.

We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last

Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

GOD OF OUR WEARY YEARS, God of our silent tears,

Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, led us into the light,

Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;

Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand,

True to our God, True to our native land.

The Priest says a blessing, and all respond People Amen.

Officiant Let us bless the Lord. People Thanks be to God.
