W hen the time arrived for Elizabeth to have her child she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy toward her, and they rejoiced with her. When they came on the eighth day to circumcise the child, they were going to call him Zechariah after his father, but his mother said in reply, "No. He will be called John." But they answered her, "There is no one among your relatives who has this name." So they made signs, asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet and wrote, "John is his name," and all were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God. Then fear came upon all their neighbors, and all these matters were discussed throughout the hill country of Judea. All who heard these things took them to heart, saying, "What, then, will this child be?" For surely the hand of the Lord was with him. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel.

C uando llegó el tiempo en que Isabel debía ser madre, dio a luz un hijo. Al enterarse sus vecinos y parientes de la gran misericordia con que Dios la había tratado, se alegraban con ella. A los ocho días, se reunieron para circuncidar al niño, y querían llamarlo Zacarías, como su padre; pero la madre dijo: "No, debe llamarse Juan". Ellos le decían: "No hay nadie en tu familia que lleve ese nom-bre". Entonces preguntaron por señas al padre qué nombre quería que le pusieran. Este pidió una pizarra y escribió: "Su nombre es Juan". Todos quedaron admirados. Y en ese mismo momento, Zacarías recuperó el habla y comenzó a alabar a Dios. Este acontecimiento produjo una gran impresión entre la gente de los alrededores, y se lo comentaba en toda la región montañosa de Judea. Todos los que se enteraron guardaban este recuerdo en su corazón y se decían: "¿Qué llegará a ser este niño?". Porque la mano del Señor estaba con él. El niño iba creciendo y se fortalecía en su espíritu; y vivió en lugares desiertos hasta el día en que se manifestó a Israel.

«¡Qué bellas son tus obras Señor!»

La belleza de las creaturas, con la variedad de luces, de dibujos y de colores de los cuerpos, así como los astros y los minerales, las piedras y los metales, las plantas y los animales, proclaman evi-dentemente los atributos de Dios. El orden de los seres nos permite descubrir en el libro de la Creación la primacía, lo sublime y la dignidad del Primer principio en su infinito poder. El orden de las cosas nos toma por la mano y nos guía con toda evidencia hasta el Ser primero y soberano, todopoderoso, absolutamente sabio y per-fectamente bueno. Aquél que no es iluminado por tanto esplendor creado es un ciego. A quién no es despertado por tantos gritos es un sordo. A quién todas esas obras no lo empujan a alabar a Dios es un mudo. A quién tantos signos no lo obligan a reconocer al Primer principio es un tonto. Abre los ojos, prepara el oído de tu alma, desata tus labios, aplica tu corazón: todas las creaturas te harán ver, escuchar, alabar, amar, servir, glorificar y adorar a tu Dios. De lo contrario asegúrate de que el universo no se ponga en contra tuya. Pues por olvidar esto «el mundo entero luchará contra los insensatos» (Sab 5:21), mientras que será una fuente de gloria para el sabio que puede afirmar con el profeta: « ¡me alegras con tus obras Señor, por tu creación; voy a gritar de júbilo ante las obras de tus manos!» (Sal 91:5). ¡Qué magnificencia en tus obras, Señor! ¡Las hiciste todas con sabiduría, la tierra esta repleta de tus dones! (Sal 103:24).

How wonderful are your works, Lord!

The beauty of things in the variety of light, shape and color, such as the heavenly bodies and miner-als, stones and metals, plants and animals, clearly proclaims the attributes of God. Their order in the book of creation clearly indicates the primacy, sublimity and dignity of the First Principle and thus the infinity of his power. In this way order itself leads us most clearly into the first and highest, the most powerful, wisest and best. Whoever, therefore, is not enlightened by such splendor of created things is blind; whoever is not awakened by such outcries is deaf; whoever does not praise God because of all these effects is dumb; whoever does not discover the First Principle from such clear signs is a fool. Therefore, open your eyes, alert the ears of your spirit, open your lips and apply your heart (Prv 22:17) so that in all creatures you may see, hear, praise, love and worship, glorify and honor your God lest the whole world rise against you. For because of this “the whole world will fight against the fool-ish” (Wis 5:21 Vg.). On the contrary, it will be a matter of glory for the wise, who can say with the Prophet: “You have gladdened me, Lord, by your deeds and in the work of your hands I will rejoice. (Ps 91[92]:5). How great are your works, Lord! You have made all things in wisdom; the earth is filled with your creatures.” (Ps 103[104]:24).
