OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

We, the people of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Faith Community, Baptized into Jesus Christ, formed by Word and Sacrament, and Empowered by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Seek to be a visible sign of God’s love. We seek to build the Kingdom of God by: Using our unique gifts to minister to one another, Welcoming all and caring for those in need, Teaching our faith to others and Uniting in worship as a family with the Body of Christ.

Dear Holy Easter People of God!

ASCENSION SUNDAY! Many are wondering why Ascension Thursday was transferred to ASCENSION SUNDAY. The following is an enlightenment from the Worship Office of our Diocese:

“In 1993, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in Rome issued an indult allowing the Dioceses in the Western United States to transfer the celebration of the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord to the Seventh Sunday of Easter. Since 1999, when the indult became permanent, with the exception of the ecclesiastical Provinces of Boston, Hart-ford, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, and the State of Nebraska who have retained its celebra-tion on the proper of Thursday, all dioceses in the United States have opted to move the cele-bration to the Seventh Sunday of Easter. Therefore, the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord will always be celebrated in the Diocese of San Bernardino on Sunday.”

Ascension isn’t Jesus’ withdrawal from the world, but the graced moment when his mission is engraved into our hearts, he said: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit!” It’s enshrined in our hearts so that this mission becomes a heartbeat of our lives. That as long as we live, Jesus’ mission keeps going, going, and going.

So, ASCENSION is the sacred moment when the mission and ministry of Jesus are passed on into our lives. It calls us to be proactive missionaries by engaging ourselves with the world’s activities but inspired and grounded in the prayers of St. Francis of Assisi:

“Lord, make me a channel of your peace, that when there is hatred, I may bring love; where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness; where there is discord, I may bring harmony; where there is error, I may bring truth; where there is doubt, I may bring faith; where there is despair, I may bring hope; where there are shadows, I may bring light; where there is sadness, I may bring joy.”

Becoming missionaries to the world today is non-negotiable. We become as what Pope Francis tells the youth, when he said, “You are the spiritual seeds of our faith today, and the spiritual investments of our hope for tomorrow.”

As missionary disciples, the people you touched will tell you: “How come when I see you, I see the Christ in you!” And you will answer, “It’s the Christ in you that recognizes the Christ in me.”

Now, at this very minute, let “disciple making” begins…

Blessings,

Fr. Romy, Seleccion, MS, Pastor

The Ascension of the Lord

He was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.

— Acts 1:9

Saint phillip neri (1515 - 1595)

In a shop near the Vatican, a group of Ameri-cans laughed as the shopkeeper showed off his fluent English and latest souvenir, a key ring whose papal portrait, when pressed, activated a recorded blessing. Through the shop window, two clerics scowled disapproval. The shopkeep-er grunted, “They’re a very somber order who’ve left the Church. I recognize them.” “By their long robes?” an American asked. “Many in Rome wear robes,” replied the shopkeeper. “It’s their long faces!” When Philip Neri arrived in sixteenth-century Rome, there was reason to be somber. Swiss Guards had been massacred on Saint Pe-ter’s steps defending the pope. Parts of Europe were abandoning the Church. But Philip resolved to be an “apostle of joy,” drawing espe-cially the young to Christ—and frequent confes-sion and Communion—by his sincere interest in their problems, prayerful example, and gentle humor. His “Oratory,” a movement as well as a place, provided recreation and devotion in a joyful atmosphere of companionship, service, and liturgy. Philip Neri challenges each of us to begin improving Church and world by changing ourselves with unfailing joy.

“The pushed” out on mission

There is a delightful character in the original Dr. Dolittle Tales called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two identical halves, with a head at each end. No matter which direction the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in Matthew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to baptize. He also tells them, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). And it is this message, confi-dent in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final destiny. The life of the faithful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the same risen, ascended glory.

Evangelization & Faith Page 7

T he Apostles didn’t get it. Despite the fact Jesus told

them that he was going to die and eventually ascend to the Father, they were still con-fused. Even in the very last moments before Jesus was to leave them, they thought he was going to restore the king-dom of Israel and become a political ruler who would reestablish the throne of Da-vid. They really didn’t get it until after the Ascension, when the Holy Spirit came and enlightened them. It’s not sur-prising, then, that we, too, sometimes wonder why the Son had to ascend and what it means to be seated at the right hand of the Father.

Jesus returned to the right hand of the Father, not to leave us but to lead us all the way to heaven. The great par-adox is because he has as-cended, he is able to remain with us in a profound new way.

If Jesus had remained on earth in his physical body, he would have been present and visible in only one place. Now

he is present in his Mystical Body, the Church. He is truly present in the Scriptures, in Baptism, in Confession, and in every sacramental action of the Church. And he is really present in his Body and Blood in the Eucharist. We see him, not with our human sight, but with the eyes of faith. What we are called to do, as faithful be-lievers, is to let the world know that the Jesus who ascended into heaven is still with us, in the Church and through the Sacraments.

Reflect on these following questions with a friend or family:

• According to Fr. Riley, why did the Son have to ascend to the Father?

• What is the work of every baptized Christian, as outlined in the video?

P RAYER: Imagine being with the apostles just be-

fore Jesus ascends into Heav-en. You hear Jesus say to the disciples, “You will be my wit-nesses in Jerusalem … to the ends of the earth.” Now prayerfully consider those words being spoken directly to you. Imagine Jesus asking you specifically to be his wit-ness in the world. In prayer, ask Jesus how you can be a better witness to his Kingdom on earth today?

R ESOLUTION: Based on this prayerful meditation,

come up with one specific thing you can do this week to be a better witness to Christ in your daily life. Then ask Jesus to help you live out this resolu-tion.
