FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION

St. Luke tells us that Christ took three apostles: Peter, James, and John, onto a mountain to pray. The mountain to which he took them is believed by Scripture Scholars to be Mt. Tabor. The three apostles whom he took with him, may be called the leaders of the Twelve Apostles. St. Peter was their natural spokesman. Later Christ was to make him Head of his Church here on earth, the first Pope of the Catholic Church. St. James was to suffer martyrdom to shed his blood for Christ and apostle of the Church in Jerusalem. St. John the beloved was the Lord�’s closest friend. He stayed at the foot of the cross with Mary and others. Jesus on the cross gave Mary his mother to the care of St. John. While Jesus was on the mountain praying with his three apostles, his face changed in appearance. His clothes became daz-zling white. He was transfigured before them. Christ had a definite purpose in performing this miracle and revealing his glory to the Apostles. He wished to prevent them from being sad when, in the near future, he suffered his Passion and al-lowed himself to be crucified. Only a short time before, Christ had prophesized his suffering and death. This prophesy had depressed the spirit of the Apostles. The Apostles, being good Jews, looked for Christ to establish an earthly kingdom. They could not understand how Christ being tortured and crucified and finally put to death would fit into these plans of redeeming mankind. Hence, Christ in his great love gave them a foretaste of his glory to come, the glorified body of heaven. But when Christ was transfigured, suddenly two men were talking to him; Moses and Elijah. Their presence was significant. The Jews had con-tinually accused Christ of being a violator of the law but here was Moses, the author and originator of the law (Torah), talk-ing with Christ. Also, Elijah the leading prophet of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) was present with him. Both of them gave Christ the place of honor. Their presence gave support to Christ in his mission. He had come to earth not to con-tradict the law but to fulfill it. The Apostles entered into a trance or deep sleep. Realizing the importance of this revelation, St. Peter wanted to set up three shepherd huts for Christ, Elijah, and Moses but this was not practical. But while Peter was speaking a cloud came over them and a voice, similar to the one when Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River, said �“this is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.�” Thus God the heavenly Father, the First Person of the Blessed Trinity, had spoken out of a cloud. He too had given his support to his divine Son. He had called him his �“Chosen One�”; he commanded his Apostles to �“listen to him�”. Christ�’s Transfiguration proved his divinity. What does this mean for you and me? It means an important lesson in our lives. Through suffering we can unite then to the sufferings of our Lord. (1 Colossians v. 24) Christ told us that we must deny ourselves and take up our cross and follow Him. We must take up our cross daily with love, by enduring suffering patiently with Christ. Remember the words of St. Paul to the Romans: �“that the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to come!�” Yes, we also will receive a glorified body in the kingdom of heaven. This Saturday, February 23 at the 4:30 Mass, the 2014 Confirmation class of St. Paul the Apos-tle Parish was commissioned to begin their immediate study for the reception of the sacrament in the spring of next year. Please remember these students throughout the year as they prepare to become "Soldiers of Christ." REP classes will resume on Monday, February 25 at 5:45 in the school. Q & A�’ S ON MARRIAGE 12) Isn�’t this simply an outdated teaching? Why doesn�’t the Catholic Church just get with the times? Truth is not told by a clock. In a culture that values the �“new�” and �“cutting edge,�” a word like �“traditional�” can sound antiquat-ed and be too easily dismissed. But the Church�’s teaching is not simply �“traditional,�” it is perennial. That is, it is not based on any number of shifting biblical interpretations or theologi-cal or cultural fads. It is based on the unchanging nature and dignity of the human person. Ultimately, it is that dignity of the human person that the Church affirms in opposing the re-definition of marriage. It is also important to note once again that marriage predates our state and our nation by thousands of years. It is part of the natural order. The state lacks any power to change its fundamental nature, and any attempt to do so only confuses and undermines the basic building block of so-ciety.

St. Thomas More Lecture Series Kicks-Off a New Season

Historic St. Joseph Parish, 416 N. Chicago St., continues in its mission to provide �“Faith Development and Continuing Education for Peo-ple of all Faiths�” through the annual St. Thomas More Lecture Series. Four diverse speakers are headlining the Lecture Series this year. The Lecture Series runs for four consecutive Wednesdays from 7:00- 8:30 PM. The lectures are open to the public; free admission.
