Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 October 14, 2018

From Our Music Director Dear SJOC parishioners, friends, and visitors,

Happy Fall 2018! Outside, the leaves have not completely changed their colors yet, but even though the weather is getting colder, we have a lot of reasons to keep you warm inside. Physically, of course, but especially spiritually. Let me start with an update regarding the Music Ministry of Saint John of the Cross Parish.

Since July of 2017, the choir has grown by six/seven members. Along the way, a few of them had to relocate, others became unavailable to continue their service, but guess what! A new group of people is now considering joining the Music Ministry! As of right now, the group consists of 28 individuals, and I am optimistic we will reach the “30-mark” sometime soon… So, why don’t you join us? There is no application to fill, there is no fee, there is no experience required, and there is no age limit. If you are interested, come to see me, send an email or call me at the rectory.

About the people in the choir. They are awesome, are they not? I mean, really awesome! I mentioned they are about 30, when they are all together, but you know they usually split into three groups to cover all masses. One-in-three: like the Holy Trinity! Not only that, but look at this: among them, at least six people can play guitar or bass, one or more can play the flute, three or four can play the congas, one for sure can handle the drum set, four to six people alternate the tambourine and other little nice music instruments, two and potentially more play the piano, and pretty much everybody can ring the bells… And even more: 19 of them are also cantors: can you believe it?

In case you do not have enough reasons to become part of our team, here is another incentive for you. Since the end of this past August, a bereavement choir was formed. Some people from the Music Ministry and other parishioners – who are currently not active members of the choir – have dedicated their time to participate at the masses for the Christian burial. A cantor still guides the songs during the funerals, but the bereavement choir’s members provide support to the music and a solid “SJOC-parish-presence” for the family, relatives, and friends of the deceased.

Now that you are up to speed with the Music Ministry, let us look at what is coming next. Starting at the end of November, the “Tenth Year Anniversary Celebration of Saint John of the Cross Parish” will start. Many and various in nature are the events that will occur from November 2018 to November 2019. We start with two big ones. The first is the concert of SJOC Choir on Friday November 30th, 2018, at 7:00 p.m. in the church. There will be a lot of great music, which will be even greater if you are there to participate with us in praying to God. The second is the 4:00 p.m. mass on the very next day, Saturday December 1st, 2018, which also coincides with the beginning of Advent. And there we will have more great music! Make sure to mark your calendars… And then we will be in Advent, so… the bells are coming back!

As you know and see, the Music Ministry always provides a large variety of wonderful music and will continue to do so! Make sure you stay updated with everything that happens in the parish, through coming to mass, reading the bulletin, looking on the website, etc. I am telling you, there are going to be some nice things coming up – especially in 2019 –, so… keep your eyes and ears open… And, as always, please do not hesitate to contact SJOC staff at the parish’s rectory, should you have questions.

Thank you! God Bless all of you……………………………………………………………………………………….Francesco Binda, D.M.

NICA NEWS UPDATE – October 2018 We are writing to provide a brief update on the situation in Nicaragua and to thank you for your continued support of its beautiful people. Your prayers and financial offerings are greatly appreciated and are making a difference in several important ways. Very disturbingly, the people of Nicaragua are struggling to find their way through ongoing political turmoil and fear of what tomorrow may bring. Although there has been a lull in the violence and bloodshed in the streets of Leon, violent attacks against the Catholic Church continue. As you may recall, college students in several Nicaraguan cities took to the streets in April against controversial social security reforms decreed by President Daniel Ortega. The peaceful demonstrators were met with violence, bloodshed and kidnapping at the hands of Ortega’s forces. The Catholic Church united with the people, demanding an end to the violence and bloodshed, and attempted to mediate peace. These efforts were met once again with violent attacks against several clergy. President Ortega blames the Catholic Church and the United States for the coup against his regime. The people of Nicaragua are demanding that Ortega resign or least schedule an early election, but he steadfastly refuses to do so. Amid all this suffering and uncertainty, we are still reaching out in prayer and support of our partner parish, The Sacred Heart of Jesus in the tiny village of Chacraseca. We are presently working with JustHope and Padre Harold to move forward with our plans to build a worship space for the Chapel of the Divine Child in a remote area. Funds were raised through the past year’s Giving/Sharing Tree and Lenten Almsgiving at St. John of the Cross and St. Mary-Chardon, allowing us to build a 24x30-foot pavilion-style structure with the hope that future donations will allow us to add walls to the building. On another front, Padre Tomas extends his gratitude for all the prayers and financial support you have provided during this crisis. He reports that the donations to our emergency appeal allowed him to purchase medical supplies, medicine and comfort items for those injured or who became ill during the recent unrest. Money was also used to buy food and supplies for people whose jobs were impacted by the turmoil and now find themselves without a way to support their family. Some funds were used to help Padre Tomas negotiate the release of innocent young men and women who were taken prisoner while participating in peaceful demonstrations or while trying to build barricade walls to protect their neighborhoods. He was also able to make repairs to the seminary well that had become contaminated. Finally, he shared that some money was used to keep the Catholic radio station in Leon up and running for five hours a day, allowing the people to pray and hear the Bishop’s voice of hope. Never would we have imagined that our global partnership with the people of Nicaragua would include sending prayers to end a war and money to save lives and ease the suffering of these beautiful people. Please keep the people of Nicaragua in your daily prayers. They need our prayerful support more than ever! We invite you to contact us at [email protected] with any questions or concerns. With God’s peace and love…………………………………………………………………………………………..Dale and Marie George HANDS UNITED IN HOPE & LOVE MINISTRY

Ss. Robert and William Catholic School:

You may have recently heard or read about the Ohio Department of Education’s release of school report cards. Although Catholic schools are not included in this report, Catholic schools that are providers of the Educational Choice Scholarship are required to administer the state’s standardized tests to students in Grades 3-8. We are also obligated to adhere to the guidelines of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, a program to identify students from kindergarten through grade 3 that are behind in reading. Schools are mandated to provide help and support to make sure students are on track for reading success by the end of third grade. If a student does not pass the state reading test with a proficient score, they are to be retained in third grade. It is with a great sense of accomplishment that we can share the news that for two straight years now, ALL SRW’s third grade students have succeeded in gaining proficiency in reading and have been promoted to the fourth grade. We are proud of these students and grateful to the teachers in the Lower School who are so dedicated to building a firm foundation in academic excellence.

A Month of Remembrance In November, the Church takes time to remember in prayer those who we have lost during the year. As a special way to honor the deceased friends and family of St. John of the Cross parishioners, we will create a photo display to remain in the gathering area throughout the month of November. If you have lost someone special this year, please email [email protected] or drop off their photo so we can include them in our prayers. The collage can include deceased who are either parishioners or non-parishioners. Photos that are dropped off can be on regular paper or photo paper. We will not be able to return these photos, so if you have one that is dear to your heart, stop by the parish office and we can make a copy of it to use on the photo collage. Please submit all photos by October 29.
