2 Corinthians 4:15 15 Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it ex-tends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

Hello all,

I can’t believe that we are already in November. Fall has come the leaves are chang-ing and the nights are getting cooler. As I think about all that we have to be thankful for I give thanks for your generosity as you have given your time and money to help the chil-dren of Irving Elementary. I know last month in our newsletter there were several thank you notes from Lesa the social worker and also from the principle and faculty. Thank you for helping to make this mission a priority. As we continue to develop our partner-ship with Irving I know there will be more needs that are brought to our attention. We know that there are needs for supplies for the teachers along with a continued need for student supplies, uniforms, and even food. Lesa shared with me a while back that often times she will be notified when there is a family in crisis and may need immediate assis-tance with food. I give thanks for each and every one of you that has brought in food to help our growing pantry.

As I think about our food pantry there are several items that I know we are drastically low on and that is canned soups and canned or shelf stable meats. So when you go gro-cery shopping please pick up a few cans of soup, tuna, chicken, or other shelf stable meats to replenish our pantry. Jacob has been very busy in creating a space in our base-ment storeroom for the pantry so that we can relocate items from my office.

As I think about preparing for the holiday season I continue to give thanks for each and every one of you. I pray that God will fill you with a new sense of wonder for the hol-iday season as we prepare for Thanksgiving, Advent, and Christmas. Speaking of Advent our sermon series will be called Sent and I pray that you will continue to experience God’s divine blessing through the series.

Grace and Peace, Pastor Jeff & Beth

Oral Hygiene Kits for GraceMed

St. Paul's UMC has been scheduled for November to provide GraceMed Dental Office with the Oral Hygiene Kits. The kits consist of: 1~regular tooth-brush, 1~regular tube of toothpaste and dental floss. They would really appre-ciate them put into a zip lock baggie, but if you are unable to do that, then just the 3 items will do. This is an ongoing project for GraceMed Den-tal. Thank you so much for your cooperation. Contributions can be left in the work room next to the church office

Why do we have a Parish Nurse?

Christian and United Methodist Concepts of Health, Wellness and Health Ministry Jesus’ ministry was wholistic*. He ministered to the many aspects of an individual, including the physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, and social. The New Testament provides many examples of how Jesus healed the sick and sent his disciples to pray, anoint and heal them.1

United Methodists have a historical foundation of wholistic* care too. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, was also a physician. As was the norm in the 18th century, clergy who trained at Oxford or Cambridge attended courses in theology and medical advice. Wesley’s medical text, The Primitive Physic, provided medical ad-vice that was affordable to even the poorest. The most significant aspect of Wesley’s book, as well as the medical advice that can be found in his writings, is his continuous emphasis on preventive care and healthy living.2

According to Wesley’s journal, for more than 27 years, he chose anatomy and physiology as top-ics for leisure reading. He applied the knowledge gained to the basic treatment of illness, both at the dispensaries he opened and during his travels. John Wesley perceived and earnestly desired that his followers should have healthy bodies and minds, as well as saved souls. History tells us that the common person could not afford the cost of medical care by a physician in Wesley’s time, so most turned to the local church vicar for care. While Wesley recommended that for trauma or complicated diseases a person should seek an “honest physician that fears God,” he emphasized simple, common sense medicines and treatments. He also prescribed a healthy lifestyle that included healthy foods, exercise, cleanliness, sleep and reduced stress. In his medical text, Primitive Physic or an Easy and Natural Method of Curing Diseases, Wesley edited the medical treatments of the day into simple forms with readily-available resources. He purposely included several remedies for each disorder “not only because all are not equally easy to be procured at all times, and in all places: but likewise because the medicine which cures one man, will not always cure another.”3

* Wholistic—“Wholistic” is not a misspelled version of “holistic.” In health ministry, the linguistic terms “wholistic” and “holistic” are not interchangeable—they each have distinct meanings. When speaking of health ministry and parish/faith community nursing, the “W” should be used. The Rev. Dr. Granger Westberg first advocated the use of the term “wholistic” rather than “holistic,” to more closely relate the term to wholeness and to avoid confusion with the term “holistic” that con-notes non-religious alternative health care practices.

We continue to need help with the nursery on Sunday morning. If you would be willing to help in the nursery during the worship hour, please contact the church office.
