A Loving Church, Making a Difference in the World

Letter from the Pastor

We find ourselves venturing into October. It seems like the year has flown by incredibly fast for

me. I feel like I don’t know what has happened—I have gone from January to now in the course of

days. However, we find ourselves here, and seemingly impossibly soon, we’ll be gearing up for advent,

and Christmas will be upon us.

As the year has passed and we have confronted different challenges and events, a question

comes to mind: “Why are we here?” I don’t mean in the big cosmic sense, but on the local level…here

at St. Paul’s UCC in Marthasville. “Why are we here?” Or to put it another way, “What need does the

church fill for you?”

I ask this question because something that we’re trying to do is get ourselves more known in the

community. If we want to grow, we have to let people see us. We have to show people why we’re still

necessary and relevant in our times today. So, the question becomes: “What does the church do for

me?” “What need does it fill, and what am I able to do to spread that news?”

The church is here for us. It is a place to learn about the will of God and to make sure we follow

the teachings of Jesus. We come here to learn and to fellowship with one another. The church and its

buildings are very important in our lives. The question is also: “What are we doing for the church?”

“What is it that we do, or that we can bring to the church, to help it grow?” “What ideas or events have

we been sitting on that we can put into place to bring people in?”

What is it we want from the church, and what are we doing to accomplish it? How are we

making this a better place that people want to come and be a part of? It’s an easy question at first, but

then it gets a whole lot more complicated. I encourage you to really think about it—come up with these

answers and put them into practice. If we can make the church more attractive and more visible, we can

grow organically.

See you in the Pews,

Pastor Jeff

2019 Tractor cruise (K of C Journey for Charity)

On Sun., Sept. 8th, collections of non-perishable food items

and monetary donations were collected for the

Franklin & Warren County Food Pantries.

This was the first year this event included a “Northern Route”

(the Warren County Route). A total of 142 tractors participated—34 on

the Northern Route. A pretty good turnout considering they began the cruise

in the rain. The food items collected were weighed, and the monetary donations

counted. Then, all was divided up between the 7 councils,

each choosing the food pantry it wished to donate to. 7000

lbs. of food was collected—the southern warren county food

pantry received 1000 lbs. of this to feed needy families. The

monetary figures are not yet in. MANY THANKs to all who

participated in the cruise and/or contributed to this cause!

The 13th annual Tractor Cruise is set for Sept. 13, 2020.

etc.…These are all jobs that many of you so faithfully tend to. Please know

your dedication is appreciated.

TID BITS: Columbus didn’t “discover” America as we all learned in grade

school—he never set foot in North America. During 4 separate trips, the 1st one in

1492, Columbus landed on various Caribbean islands that are now the Bahamas as well as

the island later called Hispaniola. He also explored the Central and South American coasts,

but didn’t reach North America, which, of course, was already inhabited by Native

Americans. Yet, the U.S. observes Columbus Day the second Monday of October.

************************************************************************* Fall is a peak migration time

for many species of birds. The

Arctic Tern journeys about

11,000 miles each way. That is

like going all the way across

the U.S. about 3 ½ times.

Each autumn, monarch butterflies

migrate from the U.S. to Mexico and

some parts of Southern California. They

fly at speeds ranging between 12 and 25

mph. Monarch butterflies are the only

insect that migrates to a warmer climate

that is 2,500 miles away.

halloween fun facts:

• Jack o’ Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and

ghosts on the Samhain holiday.

• Pumpkins also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique monster carvings!

• Halloween was brought to North America by European immigrants who would celebrate harvest around a bonfire,

share ghost stories, sing, dance and tell fortunes.

• Tootsie Rolls were the first wrapped penny candy in America.

• The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing

masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human.

• Halloween candy sales average about 2 billion dollars annually in the United States.

• Chocolate candy bars top the list as the most popular candy for trick-or-treaters with Snickers being #1.

• Halloween is the 2nd most commercially successful holiday; Christmas is the 1st.

• Black cats were once believed to be witch's familiars who protected their powers.

• The fear of Halloween is known as Samhainopobia.

• There really are so-called vampire bats, but they're not from Transylvania. They live in Central and South America

and feed on the blood of cattle, horses and birds.
