FROM THE PRESBYTER'S DESK

2019 - Year of Spirituality “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is… to keep oneself unstained by the world” (James 1:27)Greetings to you in the precious name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Year 2018 is over and the Year 2019 is here. As we stand now in the beginning of a New Year it is a good time to reflect on the year that has just ended and look forward into the year that has begun. It is also a good time for God’s people to take an inventory of their walk with the Lord. We should take a very close look at where we are in our relationship with Him. We need to examine ourselves and see where we have been, where we are and where the Lord wants us to be. The New Year ushers in new hopes and possibilities with a fresh outlook of life, faith and service. We praise God for what we could achieve and now seek God’s grace and guidance to accomplish what is expected of us in this New Year. It is the time to remember and give thanks for God’s help and concern in our lives. Let us remember the ways which we came through and thank God for His guidance and support in our journey. We all wish to have a bright and blessed new year. For that, most of us make new decisions in our lives. It is very easy to make decisions; but very difficult to fulfill them. In the parable of the gardener and the vineyard (Luke 13:6-8) the gardener said, “…leave this alone, for one more year I will dig it around and fertilize it.” Let us not disappoint the good Lord this year. May God be happy with our deeds and good lives. We celebrate the Year 2019 as the ‘Year of Spirituality.’ The Westminster Dictionary of Christian Spirituality notes that Christian Spirituality is not simply for the ‘interior life’ or the inward person, but as much for the body as the soul, and is directed to the implementation of both the commandments of Christ, to love God and our neighbors.’ the pursuit of Christian spirituality will result in what the Word of God calls the fruit of the Spirit: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law" (Galatians 5:22-23). When a believer lives by the power of God's Spirit, it produces Godly qualities as well as brings honor to God. As Jesus taught, "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 5:16). Seen from this perspective, Christian spirituality is for the honor of God, personal maturity, and serves as a blessing to others, both through the good deeds that take place as well as a heart attitude that points others to God.

May the Almighty God bless us all.

SUNFLOWERSSunflowers turn according to the position of the sun, in other words, they ‘chase the light.’ You might already know this, but there is another fact that you probably do not know!Have you ever wondered what happens on cloudy rainy days when the sun is completely covered by clouds? This is an interesting question, isn’t it?Perhaps you think the sunflower withers or turns its head towards the ground. Is this what crossed your mind? Well, that’s incorrect. This is what happens: They turn towards each other to share their energy. Nature’s perfection is amazing; now let’s apply this reflection to our lives. We all want this light and seek it in different ways; in our family, friends, religion, work and so on. But there are always going to be cloudy days, gloomy days, because there is no escaping them. When this happens, most people become overwhelmed, low-spirited, and the most vulnerable ones, sometimes, become, depressed. How about following the examples of the beautiful sunflowers supporting and empowering each other nature has so much to teach us.Wishing everyone a “Sunflower” trait of turning towards each other on their cloudy and gloomy days.

SPREAD GOODNESS. IT WILL COME BACK TO YOU.=From Peekay’s Collections =

COVER PAGEThis time again, like in the last issue, the front cover page heralding the New Year is the creation of another youth, Meghana Vijayan, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. T. Vijayan (PD 135). We do appreciate her artistic talent and wish her great success in the pursuit of this God given gift.

CAROL ROUNDSContrary to the past practice, this year’s carol rounds was on a different note – that is the event was spread over 7 days, December 12-19 with a break on 15th, only till midnight instead of compressing it into 3 whole nights. About 25 enthusiastic members assembled every day – a few of them all days, particularly Achen and Kochamma, the driving force behind the group - and they went house to house in a mini bus and a few cars in tow. Singing carols announcing the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is an exhilarating moment and happily every family welcomed the group with lots of enthusiasm. Christmas goodies were galore in all houses and every night a family hosted dinner. It was the group’s wish to visit all the houses in our Parish but could cover only 94 houses, as the rest was away on vacation or expressed inconvenience owing to security restrictions. On all accounts the 7 nights were indeed blessed and we are thankful to the Lord for giving us strength to go round the houses singing the great news of His birth. The group remembers with gratitude your hospitality and the courtesy service graciously rendered by you that enabled the group to sing with supreme verve and flexibility. A special thanks to Achen and Kochamma for the leadership and all the participants for readily sparing their time to join the group. Praise be to God for keeping us safe from all kinds of mishaps during the trip.=Chandy Thomas = Treasurer

CAROLS SERVICEThis year’s Carol Service in the evening of 22nd December, in more ways than one, was more blessed than of previous years because of the congregation’s full participation in the event. Besides the church choir, carols were rendered also by the Men’s Fellowship, Women’s Fellowship and Sunday school. St. Paul Church’s ambience added to the overall gaiety of the function. As a prelude to the carols singing, a short worship service commenced at 6.30 pm lead by Rev. Alex Abraham and the congregation singing the traditional hymn Oh! Come, All Ye Faithful. Jacob Zachariah, Parish Secretary, formally welcomed the audience. Rev. Jomy Mathew Thomas of St. Thomas Evangelical Church with his family graced the occasion and gave the Christmas message. The main Choir sang 3 songs each in Malayalam and English, conducted by ever enthusiastic Jelson Chacko. His selfless efforts and hard work were well appreciated by everyone. The rendition by the Sunday school and Women's Fellowship was well lauded. The Men's Fellowship received a standing ovation for its singing. Rev. Jomy Thomas gave a message highlighting the humility and sacrifice of our Lord and Savior.

NEWS Tit-BitsSanta Claus remembered this year too to visit us to enthrall everyone particularly the children. He addressed the excited children, asking them to focus on Jesus, whose birth is the true reason for our joy and celebration. As usual, he gladdened the children with sweets and made a quick dash, as close to Christmas, he had to visit a lot of children and give away sweets. This year’s surprise novelty was presenting cakes to 10 lucky winners drawn by lot. Among the lucky winners were Jomy Achen and our Aneesha Kochamma. Needless to say, the success of this year’s event is a testimony to the personal interest and effort put in by our Achen for training Men’s Fellowship and Aneesha Kochamma for training Women’s Fellowship and Sunday school choirs. The congregation was enthralled by the beautiful songs as they immersed themselves in the serenity of the moment. Kurien George, Choir Secretary, proposed a vote of thanks. The programme ended with light refreshments. A cup of warm tea helped to shun the wintry chill! = Kurien George =Choir Secretary

UNITY CHOIRThe Mumbai Pune Malayalam Churches will be presenting its Unity Choir “MORE THAN ADORABLE’ on Sunday, December 6th @ 5.30 PM at St. Mary the Virgin Church in Parel, Mumbai. Besides our Choir, the other Choirs participating in this event are St. James Church, Borivali; Holy Trinity Church, Chembur; St. Christopher Church, Kalyan; Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Parel; Jubilee Church, Sanpada; St. Paul’s Church, Vakola and Holy Immanuel Church, Vasai.

UNITY OCTAVEThis will be an ecumenical worship service of all Christian denominations – Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Jacobite, Marthoma, Methodist – in Oldham Methodist Church, East Street, Pune on January 20th in the evening. Please await more details through pulpit announcements.

ANNUAL CONVENTIONAs you have seen above, our Annual Convention will be held during January 24-26 in the Trust Office. It will end on the 27th with Holy Communion Service in St. Paul’s Church. There will be retreats for the YF in the morning and MF & WF in the afternoon. The speaker will be Rev. Anil Thomas, Missionary in Charge of CSI Mugalappally Mission. Please uphold the Convention in your prayers and attend all the sessions as programmed to hear the word of God and be blessed.

SHORT PRAYERSovereign Lord, you are the God of creation, revelation and history. We know nothing is hard for you, so do what you desire to do and through our lives. Amen.
