Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and all the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Lesson Isaiah 9:1-4 But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." We stand to affirm our faith by praying the Nicene Creed.

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen

and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of

the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of

one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he

became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified

under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in

accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the

Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will

have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the

Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the

Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism

for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to

come. Amen.

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

The Episcopal Church invites all Christians to receive communion. The host is placed in your open hands; please assist in guiding the chalice to your lips, or dip the host in the wine. We have gluten free hosts available, ask the priest at the rail. It is acceptable to receive only the bread or the wine. If you would rather not

receive communion, you are invited to come to the rail for a blessing. Simply cross your arms over your chest and the priest will say a prayer for you.

Announcements Reverend Andy Bro

Please welcome Reverend Andy Bro as he joins us again as the guest preacher and presider today. Rev. Bro resides with his wife Lu in the retirement home they built in Lake Carroll IL. They lived for many years in Ames, Iowa, where she was on the faculty at Iowa State University and he was dean of a private Episcopal school and earned a master’s degree in playwriting. Father Bro is a man of many talents who remains active in his retirement, and he has the second longest continuous priestly tenure in the Diocese of Chicago. We are grateful he was able to make the long trip to be with us today.

2017 Budget Q&A and Annual Meeting,

After the service today at 11:30 AM will be the first half of our Annual Meeting. The 2017 Annual Budget will be presented with discussion. A continental breakfast will be provided. Childcare is available.

The second half of the annual meeting of the Church of St. Paul DeKalb will be held NEXT SUNDAY, January 29th at 11:45 a.m. Please plan to attend this meeting that begins immediately following the 10:30 a.m. worship service. We will elect Vestry members, a Warden, and convention delegates, as well as approve our budget and receive reports. Childcare will be available. Lunch will be provided! As we move forward in 2017, it is important for all of us to be involved in the life of our parish. Please plan to attend the meeting!

Are back now, singing for Sunday worship services! Anthem rehearsals are at 10:00 AM in January. Join us in the Parish Hall for practice! Resume regular evening rehearsals on Thursday, January 26. Children's Choir 6:00-6:30 PM. Adult/Youth Choir 7-9 PM.

Grace Place Outreach Opportunity

One of the ways St. Paul’s supports Grace Place Campus Ministry at NIU is by providing a few Wednesday suppers for their fellowship time which is followed by a worship service. This consists of making food at home and dropping it off at Grace Place on Wednesday where they are able to re-heat, dish up and serve themselves when they are ready.

If you would like to be part of a team that will provide a meal (dividing the meal courses make it manageable), please contact Jocelyn Prall at rhysprall@comcast.net or call 815-762-0886.

The goal will be to provide two meals this semester. Rev. Amy Fallon of Grace Place needs to know soon if we are able to participate this semester. She says the students enjoy having a homemade meal from St. Paul’s.
