Stewardship and the Gift of Human Life

October is Respect Life Month for Catholics in the United States. To be good stewards of the gift of life obliges us to pro-claim the Gospel in word and deed when it comes to preserving the sanctity of life. What is most important for good stewards is to remain faithful to prayer and to renew this month a firm resolve to proclaim a culture of life and an end to the killing and degradation of human beings, especially those who are vulnerable due to their age, health or dependency, and to work to rid our culture of the notion that humans are simply part of a disposable society.

I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.

- St. Teresa of Calcutta

Sponsorship Requirements

Being a sponsor in the way that the Catholic Church defines it is to enter into a spiritual relationship with the one being sponsored. A sponsor is someone who will be an example of discipleship and a support for one who is to grow in the Catholic faith and way of life. The role of sponsor is different from being a “guardian” and more than being a good friend. Guardians and friends don’t necessarily believe in the Incarnation of the Son of God and in Christ’s saving passion, death and resurrection. They don’t necessarily share the Cath-olic faith and may not be able to hand the faith on to the one being sponsored.

Therefore, to be a sponsor for someone who is to re-ceive the sacraments of Baptism or Confirmation one is required to have completed their fourteenth year and be a fully initiated, practicing Catholic in good standing. You must be a registered member of a Cath-olic faith community. If married, a sponsor must be in a valid, sacramental union. A sponsor may not be the father or mother of the one to be Baptized/Confirmed. All sponsors must obtain a Letter of Eligibility from their parish. A Letter of Eligibility from St. Peter’s will only be given to a registered, contributing, partici-pating individual who has been an active parishioner for a minimum of 3 months.

New Jersey’s Adoption Law has changed Beginning January 1, 2017, adoptees and certain relatives will be able to obtain a copy of their original birth certifi-cate without a court order. The birth certificate will in-clude the names of the birth parents who placed children for adoption unless a birth parent requests their name be omitted.

Birth parents who wish to preserve their privacy must submit a Redaction Request Form to the New Jersey De-partment of Health no later than December 31, 2016. The Redaction Request Form can be obtained by calling 866-649-8726, ext. 582 or downloading it at http://nj.gov/health/forms/reg-36c.pdf.

The Catholic Church has always supported reunions be-tween adoptees and birth parents, if such reunions were by mutual consent. The Church continues to do so through their Catholic Charities agencies.

If you know individuals that could be effected by the changes to New Jersey Adoption law, please help alert them. Anyone needing assistance can call a HELPLINE at 609-989-4809.

Are you interested in becoming Catholic or completing your Sacraments?

Through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), adults who desire to become fully initiated Catholics en-gage in a process of conversion, receive basic religious instruction, and are welcomed into the Catholic commu-nity. While the RCIA is primarily intended for those who have not been previously baptized, it is also adapted for those who were baptized in other Christian communities and now wish to become Catholic, and for baptized Catholics who, for whatever reason, received neither Confirmation nor Holy Communion as children and would now like to complete their Christian initiation. Many adult Catholics, for one reason or another, have received Baptism and Holy Communion, but not the Sac-rament of Confirmation. If you are one of them, we invite you to complete your Christian Initiation by taking part in our Confirmation preparation process. The RCIA and Adult Confirmation processes are ongoing throughout the year. To learn more, please contact Fr. Jeff through the Parish Office.
