Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time / Quinto Domingo de Tiempo Ordinario Dear parish family,

St. Benedict of Nursia is considered the Father of Western Monasticism. He founded a religious community called the “Benedictines;” and during his life in the sixth century, he founded over 12 monasteries in Italy. When I began the seminary in 1989, I studied under the Benedictines at St. Meinrad in Indiana. It was a very spiritual time for me. The spirituality and an essential characteristic of the personality of St. Benedict was his sense of balance and harmony between “work and prayer.” Thus, the motto of the Benedictine community is “Ora et Labora (www.osb.org/rb/). St. Benedict understood that both prayer and work are an essential and a necessary part of daily life; however, he did not state that work was a necessary evil. Work was a way to give glory to God just as it is in prayer that God is glorified.

For too many people in our society today, the work that they have to do denies them of their basic human dignity without even providing an adequate means of supporting themselves and/or their families. Migrant and farm laborers, minimum wage workers and too many others can find themselves in work situations which can often be dangerous and degrading, while businesses offer employment, these institutions refuse to provide adequate pay or opportunities for healthcare or compensation. The frustration and fatigue of those persons who find themselves working in this condition echo the words of Job in today’s first reading (Job 7:1 – 3, 6 – 7). “Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery? Are not his days those of hirelings? He is a slave who longs for the shade, a hireling who waits for his wages. So I have been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been allotted to me… My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, they come to an end without hope. Remember that my life is like the wind; I shall not see happiness again!”

I pray that we as a community may see the value and wisdom in obtaining a balance between pray and work. Moreover, let us understand that in accord with Church social teaching, a direct relationship exists between our pray and work – both aspects of our lives give glory to God and thus should build up the Kingdom of God in our midst. Thus, our prayer should be authentic and our work just!

Blessings. Fr. Tim Querida familia parroquial,

Bendiciones, Padre Tim
