A Reading from Book of the Prophet Ecclesiastes (ECC 1:2; 2:21-23)
Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, vanity of vanities! All things are vanity!
Here is one who has labored with wisdom and knowledge and skill, and yet to another who has not labored over it, he must leave property. This also is vanity and a great misfortune. For what profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun? All his days sorrow and grief are his occupation; even at night his mind is not at rest. This also is vanity.
Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
August 4, 2019The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
(The people’s responses in bold represent wording that Pope Benedict had changed in the Mass throughout the world.)
Greeting
Priest: The Lord be with you.People: And with your spirit.
The Confiteor
I confess to almighty Godand to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinnedin my thoughts and in my words,in what I have doneand in what I have failed to do, (And then striking your breast three times)through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault;therefore, I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Priest: Lord have mercy. People: Lord have mercy.Priest: Christ have mercy. People: Christ have mercy.Priest: Lord have mercy. People: Lord have mercy.*
*(Or any other option the priest chooses. “The Lord havemercy” can be sung as “Kyrie elÁison” or the Penitentialhymn “Asperges” may be sung.)
Gloria
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will.We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King.O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ,Only Begotten Son,Lord God, Lamb of God,Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us;you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer;you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
A Reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Colossians (COL 3:1-5, 9-11)
Brothers and sisters: If you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at theright hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life ishidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and thegreed that is idolatry. Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practicesand have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator. Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free;but Christ is all and in all.
Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke (LK 12:13-21)
People: Glory to you, O Lord.
Someone in the crowd said to Jesus,“Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”
Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goodsand I shall say to myself, “Now as for you,you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you;and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselvesbut are not rich in what matters to God.”
Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
The Responsorial: If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. (PS 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14, 17)
Lector: Alleluia People Only: Alleluia (Stand) Lector Only: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. People Only: Alleluia
Priest: The Lord be with you. People: And with your spirit.
Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through Him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation He came down
from heaven,At the words that follow, up to and including and became Man, all bow
and by the Holy Spirit was Incarnate of the
Virgin Mary and became Man.
For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
He suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living
and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver ofLife, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
Who with the Father and the Son is adored and
glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the deadand the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Front Cover of the BulletinThe front cover depicts “The Transfiguration”, painted by the Renaissance master Raphael,
on one of the walls of St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, Rome. The Feast Day of the Transfiguration of Our Lord is Tuesday, August 6th. The painting was created in 1516,
commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de Medici, who became Pope Clement VII.
The seeds of a Catholic education are planted by both our parish communities and our families. By establishing strong
academic and spiritual roots, Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York are putting students on a path that
allows them to grow in faith and knowledge as they achieve their full potential. Our schools are vibrant, safe, nurturing
dwellings. Seats are available in most grades for the 2019-20 school year and financial assistance is being awarded on
a first-come, first-served basis to eligible families, while funds are still available. Please call 646-794-2885 to schedule
a tour or appointment or visit www.ApplyCatholicSchoolsNY.org to apply today. Wishing you and your children a
blessed summer, infused with prayer, filled with new memories, and highlighted with joy.

Born in old Castile, Spain, Dominic was trained for the
priesthood by a priest-uncle, studied the arts and theology,
and became a canon of the cathedral at Osma, where there
was an attempt to revive the apostolic common life
described in Acts of the Apostles.
On a journey through France with his bishop, Dominic
came face to face with the then virulent Albigensian heresy at Languedoc. The Albigensians–or Cathari, “the
pure ones”–held to two principles—one good, one evil—in the world. All matter is evil—hence they denied the Incarnation and the
sacraments. On the same principle, they abstained from procreation and took a minimum of food and drink. The inner circle led what some
people regarded as a heroic life of purity and asceticism not shared by ordinary followers.
Dominic sensed the need for the Church to combat this heresy, and was commissioned to be part of the preaching crusade against it. He
saw immediately why the preaching crusade was not succeeding: the ordinary people admired and followed the ascetical heroes of the
Albigenses. Understandably, they were not impressed by the Catholic preachers who traveled with horse and retinues, stayed at the best
inns and had servants. Dominic therefore, with three Cistercians, began itinerant preaching according to the gospel ideal. He continued this
work for 10 years, being successful with the ordinary people but not with the leaders. His fellow preachers gradually became a community,
and in 1215 Dominic founded a religious house at Toulouse, the beginning of the Order of Preachers or Dominicans. Dominic’s ideal, and
that of his Order, was to organically link a life with God, study, and prayer, with a ministry of salvation to people by the word of God.
* The Feast of St. Dominic is celebrated on Thursday, August 8th *
Prayer of Intercession to St. Dominic
O renowned champion of the faith of Christ, most holy Saint Dominic, who renounced the honor and
dignity of an earthly principality to embrace the poor, laborious, and mortified life which should
distinguish a disciple of Him Who has said: “If any man will come after Me, let him take up his cross and
follow Me.” O burning torch, who being yourself consumed with the fire of divine love, incessantly
labored to enkindle that sacred flame in the hearts of others, look down upon me from that throne of
glory where you enjoy the reward of all your labors, and obtain that some sparks of that blessed fire may
be lighted in my soul, to animate and encourage me under any crosses or trials with which it shall please
the divine goodness to visit me. Amen. (Mention your request)
