RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE Parish Center at St. Dominic Church
WEDNESDAY, JULY 3rd 1:00 PM-6:00 PM
School days are winding down, warmer weather has finally arrived, and people are making summer vacation plans.
Unfortunately, the need for blood donations never goes on vacation, so the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary is
hosting a summer blood drive. Walk-ins are always welcome, but you are encouraged to make
an appointment by calling Sherry Brown at 585-683-2484.
Unable to donate? Why not volunteer for an hour or donate some cookies? Just call Sherry.
PLEASE DONATE! Help the Auxiliary reach our goal of 21 pints!!
ACTION ALERT ON COMMERCIAL SURROGACY! Governor Cuomo has prioritized passage (by the end of this session in June!) of dangerous legislation to allow surrogate motherhood for profit. The bill would enable the buying and selling of children and the exploitation of women, and would lead to an increased reliance on IVF (in vitro fertilization) and the destruction of more human embryos. Please let your elected officials know that you oppose this legislation. Take action now! Go to www.nyscatholic.org, hover over Take Action!, click on Latest Action Alerts, scroll down and click on Maintain the ban on surrogacy to send a quick email message to your representatives in Albany. While you’re there, please check out the rest of the Latest Action Alerts—all issues of life and death! If you need more information, contact Suzanne Stack, Diocesan Life Issues Coordinator, at 585-328-3210 or [email protected].

CURRENT ART WORK IN ST. FELIX CHURCH COMPASSION
by Sr. Marie Pierre Semler, M.M. ©MKSISTERS
In this bust of the “Pieta” we see on the face of the mother, a sorrow that is restrained. A restraint that speaks of foreknowledge and a foretaste of the grief that flooded her soul on Calvary. Her suffering was a
compassionate suffering and a compassionate love, because she saw through, around and above all the agony that engulfed her. The
sculptural construction of this piece impresses us with a sense of unity and harmony, made so because compassion means, to suffer with, or, union in suffering. We may sum up the reason for its title in this; she
is a compassionate Mother, and He a compassionate Son, who has “compassion on the multitude.”
LAST FUNDRAISER FOR OUR STEUBENVILLE YOUTH The youth group is having one more fund raiser for our trip to
the Steubenville Youth Conference and we need your help. There are envelopes in the back of church: one $50
envelope and several $5 envelopes at each church. Take one put your donation in the envelope and place it
in the collection basket or drop it off or mail it to the Parish Office by July 3rd.
PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION Next week we will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit
our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression,
and disasters.
PLEASE BE GENEROUS.

WANTED: BULLETIN ADVERTISERS We also have begun the process of soliciting advertisers for the back cover of our bulletin for this upcoming fiscal year. Bulletin ads are an inexpensive way to advertise a business. A single block (1” X 2”) costs a mere $200 for the whole year, that’s less than $4/week. Please call the Parish Office if you or someone you know would like to take out a bulletin ad. Our advertisers make possible our in-house bulletin publication. We truly thank them for their support and ask that you support them in turn.
Happy 5th Anniversary to Fr. VanLieshout!!!

FROM THE PASTOR Praised be Jesus Christ! Since the very first Sunday that I arrived at St. Peter’s parish, I have tried to cultivate a deeper knowledge of, and love for, the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
On the one hand, this “pastoral priority” is nothing more than fulfilling the requirements that the Church herself expects of her pastors. For example, the Code of Canon Law lists the duties and responsibilities of the parish pastor, and includes the following key lines in her instructions:
The parish priest is to take care that the blessed Eucharist is the center of the parish assembly of the faithful. He is to strive to ensure that the faithful are nourished by the devout celebration of the sacraments, and in particular that they frequently approach the sacraments of the blessed Eucharist and penance. (Can. 528 §2)
I have quite consciously and unapologetically attempted to do exactly this. Perhaps not always as effectively as I could have. Perhaps not always choosing the best means, or explaining it in exactly the best words, or even always giving as good a personal example as I am able—but always seeing the effectiveness of my role as pastor as being necessarily tied to how well Our Eucharistic Lord is known and loved in our parish and by our parishioners (myself included, of course).
It is a constant work-in-progress because I think all of us know how weak and inconsistent our love for the Lord often is—and especially as it relates to Our Lord in the Eucharist because his presence is SO HUMBLE and SO HIDDEN, and therefore SO EASY TO TAKE FOR GRANTED. And also, frankly, because Eucharistic reverence at the parish level is truly a “group effort” and requires a total parish commitment to cultivate such a culture of reverence. Frequent confession, silence in the church before and after Mass, gestures of reverence (i.e. genuflections) toward the Tabernacle, observance of the Eucharistic fast (please, no gum in church!) and even things like dignified and modest dress (especially during the summer months) are all “elements” of the overall parish Eucharistic culture.
But all of these elements, and many more that could probably be listed, are still only exterior signs of Eucharistic devotion. They might dispose us toward a greater love of the Eucharist, and they might help prevent abuse and irreverence from creeping in, but they aren’t in and of themselves causes of true interior Eucharistic love and devotion.
And perhaps it is this interior devotion that I haven’t spent as much time focusing on “stirring up.”
I imagine that there are many parishioners who say to themselves things like:
I believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, but I just feel like my belief is so weak, and I am sometimes tempted against it; or,
I believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, but it is for me merely an intellectual assent, and not a true love; or,
I believe in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, but I have no idea how to have an personal connection with Our Lord in this Sacrament.
Whatever the problem, the fundamental solution is the same…You must spend quiet time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament outside of Mass. One of the key reasons that Our Lord comes to us in this abiding way is precisely so that he can dwell among us in all the Tabernacles of the world. But he dwells in our Tabernacles not to remain alone in our empty churches all day and all night, but to make himself personally available TO YOU!
Visit him in the church at any time of the day and talk to him heart to heart. Remember, he is not a HOLY OBJECT but A LOVING PERSON who can hear you, see you, and speak directly to the depths of your soul. He comes as a friend to you, but just as in any friendship, it requires time spent together in order to make the relationship grow.
Our Lord speaks directly to all of our parishioners in words like this: What matters is that you [come] into My presence, seeking My Face and offering Me all the love of your heart. This is enough. With this little act of adoration and love, I will do great things. I do not ask for things beyond your strength. I am not a harsh and demanding task-master; I am the most loving and grateful of friends. No moment spent in My sacramental presence goes unrewarded, for I love those who love Me. I show My Face to those who seek Me, and I give My Heart to those who yearn for My friendship (source: In Sinu Iesu).
In the hearts of Jesus and Mary,
Father Peter Van Lieshout
