Don November 13, 2016 Hope to see a good crowd at the Mass of Remembrance on Tuesday, November 15 th at 6:30 PM. This annual event is a time for us, as a parish community, to remember those who have gone before us in faith during the past year. It is always a moving celebration of those lives that have touched us so deeply. Thank you to all the young people in our Bemidji area schools and at BSU for a great fall filled with activities from cross country and soccer to concerts and plays. There seems to always be something going on with our youth and, to be honest, it’s a lot more fun to watch our own kids than to watch the pro’s who sometimes forget the love of the game or drama. I am looking forward to the usual winter events that keep us in suspense during the cold months ahead. Something I notice at Mass each weekend is folks not opening the hymnal when the congregation is invited to sing. A question I was asked as a teen by Grandma when I suggested “Mass was boring,” is “What do you bring to Mass?” That has always stuck with me (as most things Grandma’s tell us do!). It is too easy for us to come to Mass and expect to be entertained as our culture has conditioned us. The priest, the deacon, the musicians, the servers and all who share their time and talent at Mass are not there to entertain. Mass is our life blood, literally! When we bring to Mass our joys and sorrows, victories and defeats from the previous week, the Mass comes alive! I am convinced (and I tell it to our youth over and over again) that God has some specific message for each person at each Mass if our eyes and ears are open to seeing and hearing it! It may be in the homily, in a reading from Scripture, in a prayer we have heard a hundred thousand times before, in the presence of a person at Mass who inspires us because we know what they are going through outside the church walls. AND it may be in the words of a song found in the hymnal! As you already know, we are blessed with some fantastic musicians at St. Philip’s…theirs is a ministry, not a performance. They guide us in prayer whether we open our mouths or not…but even if we don’t open our mouths, please open the hymnal and PRAY the words. I trust you will be very surprised at their meaning. Music at Mass is not just “filler” to get the priest in and out or to cover the noise during Communion. Ask God to hit you over the head with what HE wants you to see and hear and feel when you come. What do you bring to Mass? What do you put into it? I must ask the same questions of myself. I am writing this on Monday, November 7 th , as I will be joining Fr. Chuck and the other priests in the Diocese for our second week of the “Good Shepherds, Good Leaders Conference” in Crookston. We will not be back before the bulletin print deadline. So, no matter the results of the election from this week, may we be a community and nation on our knees as we continue to defend the right to life of the unborn, the right to food, shelter and medical care for all in need. God bless America…and God heal her every flaw.

MY TWO CENTS by Fr. Don November 13, 2016

Hope to see a good crowd at the Mass of Remembrance on Tuesday, November 15th at 6:30 PM. Opportunity to be of service to the Church of the Diocese of Crookston In order to serve the needs of the faithful within the diocese we are establishing Diocesan Commissions. The leader of each commission will be: Dr. Mark Krejci, the Director of the Office of Marriage, Family, and Life; AJ Garcia, the Director of the Office of New Evangelization and Justice; and Anthony Lavorata, the Director of the Office of Youth Ministry and Catechesis. Each commission is composed of deacons and the laity from parishes. The Commissions (described below) are a response to the Great Commission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations; baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20) Members of each commission will assist the directors in visioning, developing, promoting, and most importantly praying for all of the ministries in the Diocese of Crookston. It is our hope that the grassroots efforts will provide education and formation that will inspire parishioners into action. Format for the work of the Commissions: Members of the Commissions will commit to meeting two times per year with the Director (Dr. Mark Krejci, AJ Garcia and Anthony Lavorata) in order to guide the vision, expansion and life of each ministry in the Diocese of Crookston. The 3 hour meetings will begin with prayer followed by a catechesis or short presentation on the topic. This will be followed by a review of the program and the development of an operational plan. Membership: Priests and deacons will be invited to serve on each Commission but the majority of members will be lay faithful. Parish pastors of the Diocese of Crookston are invited to nominate one person/couple per commission from each parish. Commissions The Marriage and Family Life Commission (with Dr. Krejci) will focus on the areas of ministry as indicated by the title. This group will review, reflect on, and pray about marriage and family life in the Diocese of Crookston, generate ideas for and review all programs concerning the preparation of married couples, the sustenance of marital vocations and the strengthening of family life within the Domestic Church. As they are able, members of this Commission will assist Dr. Krejci in spreading the word about marriage and family life events at the Diocesan, Deanery and Parish levels as these are offered. The Life and Justice Commission (with Dr. Krejci) will focus on enhancing respect life issues from conception until natural death and in so doing support the dignity of every person. This group will review, reflect on, and pray about life and justice issues in the Diocese of Crookston, generate ideas for and review all programs concerning the corporal works of mercy. Specific areas this commission will focus on are; respect life month, support for pregnant women/couples, respect-life advocacy, Project Rachel ministry to post-abortive women and men, promote awareness for the sick and needy, to be aware of the needs of the White Earth and Red Lake Reservations and finally to collaborate with the efforts of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) and the Minnesota Catholic Conference (MCC). Priests are invited to nominate 1 parishioner for the Life and Justice Commission The Evangelization and Discipleship Commission (With AJ Garcia) will focus on supporting and developing the evangelization efforts and outreach programs taking place in our parishes and communities. This group will reflect and assess the current evangelization efforts and groups already active in parishes and seek to more vibrantly live out the spiritual works of mercy. Through spiritual, intellectual, human, and apostolic formation rooted in prayer and thorough study of the lives of saints and Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation, The Joy of the Gospel, this group will assist others to become missionary disciples. Priests are invited to nominate 1 parishioner for the Evangelization and Discipleship Commission The Youth Ministry Commission (with Anthony Lavorata) will focus on the continued spiritual development and evangelization of the youth in the Crookston Diocese. This group will review, reflect on, and pray for our current outreach programs in addition to looking forward to the needs of future generations of Catholics. Through prayer and open discussion, it is the goal of this commission to encourage programming that generates faithful and joy-filled Catholic youth. Priests are invited to nominate 1 parishioner for the Youth Ministry Commission. Commission members are invited to serve a three-year term for their designated commission. The meetings will take place in each deanery. If you are interested please let Fr Chuck know before December 1st. Page 2
