Dear Parishioners, When He stopped breathing on the cross, the sun was darkened. When God’s Spirit breathed new life in Him, a new day was beginning to dawn. It’s interesting to note that as this new day was beginning to dawn, the main character of the Easter Sunday gospel, the One whose tomb was empty, was nowhere to be seen. And three of His disciples are left to wonder. First there is Mary Magdalene, also known as Mary of Magdala. Luke describes

her as someone from whom Jesus cast out seven devils. According to tradition, she was a sinner who had been forgiven by Jesus. Might she have been the woman who washed the feet of Jesus with her tears and dried them with her hair, the woman whom Jesus described as someone whose many sins were forgiven because of her great love? Whether Mary was that woman or not, she loved Jesus because He had embraced her with God’s forgiving and merciful love. Mary was there at His cross. She wanted to be there with Him at the tomb, arriving there only to find it empty. Then there are Peter and “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” whom tradition names as John. The last time we saw Peter, he was weeping bitterly because he had done something which he had sworn he would never do when he denied that he was a disciple of Jesus. The last time we saw John he was at the foot of the cross, the only one of Jesus’ male disciples to be there with his Lord. These two disciples, Peter who gave in to weakness, and John, who showed his courage and love, ran to the tomb, only to find it empty. What else can they and Mary Magdalene do but wait and see? What else can they do but give their Lord a chance to reward their faith and hope? Every year we wait during Lent to celebrate the greatest feast of all, the feast that gives us hope, the feast of God’s faithful love as seen in the resurrection of Jesus. We have waited to cry out “Alleluia! The Lord is risen as He promised.” We have waited for this day. We are ready to celebrate. We are ready to rejoice because we believe that this is the day which the Lord has made. This is our faith, a faith which will forever live in our hearts and minds because, as St. Augustine said, “We are an Easter people.” Wishing you and your loved ones a very Happy and Blessed Easter, In the Word, P.S. I’ll be away from Monday, April 6, through Sunday, April 12. Many thanks to our visiting priests for their help.

Deep grief can often paralyze a person. We can be numb. We seem to be in a trance. We become unaware of what is going on around us. We do not hear. We are blind. After Jesus’ crucifixion, the disciples must have been paralyzed with grief, with dashed hopes, with utter anxiety about what to do next. How quickly an empty tomb shakes them out of their numbness and inaction and makes them run!

Mary’s first hint of the resurrection was of the empty tomb. She ran to Peter and “the other disciple whom Jesus loved” to tell them. Was her haste due to human anguish: “They have taken the Lord from the tomb?” The two disciples run to the tomb. Was their haste due to anguish or hope? When they saw the empty tomb, what did they believe? The Gospel leaves open the answer to these questions. Belief in the resurrection takes time. It takes an encounter with the Risen One. We will not run to an empty tomb. Yet we believe in the resurrection. We believe because of the witness of disciples, beginning with those first ones who did see the empty tomb. Like them, we must run—to seek and encounter the Risen One who enables us to witness to the new Life of the resurrection. Source: 2015 Living Liturgy, Liturgical Press

Easter Sunday ranks first among our church feasts. This day above all others

is to give thanks for all that God has done for us. That being said, keep in mind that every Sunday is a celebration of Easter as we celebrate the life, passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Every Sunday we come to Mass to celebrate the sacrifice that Jesus made for us when he died on the cross and rose from the dead to save us from death to sin. Jesus freely gave his human life 2000 years ago so you and I could receive the benefit of that sacrifice today. Every time we receive the Eucharist we become a part of the Paschal Mystery. We offer all that we are to God and rise to new life in Jesus when we take his body and blood poured out for us, so we may live in Him and He in us.

Last night at the Easter Vigil, Jay Lawrence received the Sacrament of Baptism and along with Amy Valdez, Christina Maggiore, James Conzen, Jasmine Garcia, and Albaro Garcia were brought into full communion with the Church through the Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.

Dave Colson also received the Sacrament of Confirmation. These seven people participated in the RCIA process to become fully-initiated members of the Faith who will enjoy New Life in Christ, the Life we all share. Yesterday was their reception of all that God offers us every day. Please pray for these people and all who were received into the Church this weekend.
