Help us to serve you more fully and better by registering early, plus it will cost less for you and your parish. St. Philip's has paid the registration fee for clergy, delegates and alternates.
2018 Council registration dates and fees December 8: Registration is $155 / $105 per seminarian, seminarian spouse, college representative, young adult (non-delegate under 35 years old) or retired clergy spouse. Storybook Project volunteers woke up on Friday morning last week to beautiful snow and knowledge that our trip to the prison would be delayed. A session which normally requires two days would be compressed into one. On Saturday Mary Ann Everett, Lee Lewis, Elizabeth Rall, Carolyn Townes and B.P. Williams helped over 120 women select a book for each child, record-ed them reading the book, burned the recording to a CD, and wrapped up the book and CD for mailing home to their children. The children will now be able to look at the book and listen to their mother’s voice as she reads to them. This present is such a wonderful and lasting Christ-mas gift for the children. One inmate expressed her gratitude to Mary Ann and Lee by saying she had served 13 of her 18 years mandatory sentence and she has grandchildren she has never seen. “Sending the books to my grandchildren so they can hear my voice is the only connection I have with them”. It truly makes us feel blessed to know that we are making an impact on family preservation and literacy. Other Philippians who are volunteers are Jean Schott, Sherry McWhorter, Patty Clark, Caroline Newkirk, and Anne Hartness, co-chairperson of the project.
New Outreach Opportunity
In February we will have an opportunity to show love to the folks at Grace House by gifting NEW pillows and NEW pillowcases. Kathy Palmer is in the process of organizing this new outreach project. Grace House is a non-profit organization offering transitional and semi-permanent housing and support services for homeless men and women living with HIV/AIDS and recovering from substance abuse. Many applicants who apply to Grace House have no resources, are homeless, and have limited or no contact with family members. Those who are new to Grace House arrive with no pillow of their own; having a new one with a fresh pillowcase is a small but honorable gift that we can provide. Additionally, when they transition out, the pillow is theirs to keep. Each Sunday in February we will collect pillows and pillowcases for Grace House. There will be a box in the narthex for collection. Kathy Palmer will collect items each Sunday and deliver them to Grace House. New standard pillows and new standard pillow cases (color doesn’t matter). Collections dates are each Sunday in February, beginning Feb. 4

November marked the halfway point of the Capital Campaign! To date, we have completed four out of the seven projects, and the organ is in the process of being built and installed by early next year. The organ is the single largest expense of our campaign, so please don't let your pledge payments fall behind. Next on the list are improvements to the Courtyard and Admin-istration Building. Annual Parish Meeting on January 17, 2018
Our Annual Parish meeting will begin with supper at 6:00 followed by our meeting at 6:30 p.m. Reports from the various committees will be available, the 2018 budget will be presented, and we will vote for three new vestry members. Many, many thanks to the three vestry persons rotating off: Bob Everett, Jim Newkirk, and Beverly Scafidel. If you are interested in serving on the vestry, please see one of the wardens or clergy. It is a big responsibility, but in the midst of all the work and discussions, there is a lot of laughter and joy. Serving on the vestry may look a little different now than in the past as we’ve worked this year very intentionally on building community, addressing one topic each month for discussion, and grounding all we do in prayer and thanksgiving for the gift of St. Philip’s in our lives. There are several expectations for those serving on the vestry: 1. Regular attendance at worship 2. Attendance to all vestry meetings (second Wednesday of every month) 2. Commitment to an annual pledge 3. Attendance at significant services and events (Goat Roast, Epiphany, etc.) 4. Attendance at funerals when possible 5. Mandatory attendance at Vestry Retreat (early February) Come be with us on January 17th as we celebrate the gifts of God for the people of God!

In just a few weeks, you will have the chance to vote on three new Vestry members to replace the three who are rotating off at the end of this year. I am one of those who will be rotating off the Vestry after three years. Serving on the Vestry has provided me with insight in planning the future of St. Philips and the opportunity to have my opinion heard regarding major and minor projects. It was the Vestry that approved the hiring of CJ to focus on our ministry to youth and their families. We were vitally involved in planning for and carrying out the capital campaign that has resulted in numerous improvements to our physical facilities including new roofs for some of our buildings, new facilities for flower and altar guild work space, and updated our vesting areas, along with much needed emergency exits from the sanctuary. And we are anxiously awaiting the completion and installation of our new truly unique pipe organ! The Vestry approved the expansion, repaving and additional lighting of the parking lot. The Vestry approves the budget and monitors the monthly progress of it, making changes when necessary. In summary, if it happens at St. Philip’s, the Vestry probably has something to do with supporting it. But serving on the Vestry has other advantages too. For me it enhanced my interactions with the other members as we work and worship together. It provided me a closer relationship with our priests and the programs and activities near and dear to them. It expanded my knowledge of St. Philip’s and provided me with a glimpse into the future of our parish. That future is positive and exciting. I encourage you to seriously consider running for the Vestry. If you are interested or need more information, you should contact Kyle or CJ.
