Commissions’ Corner Holy Week is the last week of Lent, beginning on March 25 and ending on March 31. It is one of the most sacred weeks in

the Catholic faith. The purpose of Holy Week is to reenact, relive and participate in the Passion of Jesus Christ. Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, March 25 depicting Jesus’ arrival into Jerusalem during Passover. Palms were used to celebrate the arrival of a king. The Triduum (In Latin means 3 days) is celebrated as one Liturgy over the course of 3 days. One noticeable fact is that on Holy Thursday we open the celebration of the Triduum but it is not closed until after the Easter Vigil or Easter Mass on Easter Sunday. This is why it is important to attend all three days because if you go to only one you will miss out on 2/3rds of the liturgy! The Triduum officially ends at dusk on Easter Sunday. Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday is where we recognize the installation of our first Apostles at the Last Supper and to-day recognize our Priests in that same role. The “Washing of the Feet” takes place on this day also. Usually 12 people are selected from the Parish to represent the original 12 apostles. Those selected are usually from every age group becoming Servants of Christ and representing each of us! The Holy Eucharist, the source and summit of our faith, is shared with us just as Jesus shared His Body and Blood with the apostles at the Last Supper. After Mass, we process following the Holy Eu-charist to the Altar of Repose in the Par-ish Hall to adore the Living Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. Don’t be shy just follow Fr. Greg and the Holy Eucharist when they pass your row. Adoration lasts until 10:30 p.m. and all are asked to stay and pray. We continue on Good Friday recognizing Jesus’ death on the Cross. We begin with the Living Stations of the Cross at 2:00 p.m. and continue the Triduum with the Good Friday Liturgy at 3:00 p.m. The Veneration of the Cross, which is the presentation of the Cross for us to show our love and respect for Jesus’ sacrifice is part of this service. Many will kiss or place their hand on the cross as witness to Jesus’ sacrifice. You will notice that the tabernacle is opened and decorations in-side the church are minimal. This is a very solemn day as we reflect on Jesus’ death on the cross to save us from sin.

The Bible and the Virgin Mary

Starting April 6, 2018, we will have another wonderful, informative Bible Study through the heart of Mary, Jesus’ Mother. Faith Formation Youth Ministry: On Palm Sunday we reflect on Jesus' journey into Jerusalem! Palms were waved to welcome our King, Jesus. Experi-

ence Jesus' journey throughout Holy Week by attending weekday Mass, Reading the Bible, doing Meditations, prayer and attend-ing the Triduum Liturgies. God's promise for salvation is for all of us! Faith Formation Classes continue on Mon-day, March 26 as we emphasize Holy Week. Students are asked to report to class by 4:30 p.m. as we have many activities planned for this day. Please note there are NO Clas-ses, April 2-6 due to Spring Break! This in-cludes all ministries: Grades K-6, Middle School Ministry and High School Ministry. Enjoy your time off! Dress Rehearsal for the "Living Stations’ will take place on Wednesday, March 28 and Thursday, March 29 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Our Good Friday presentation is set for March 30 at 2:00 p.m. Please come and pray with us! Music Notes Holy Week is here! May it be a blessed time for you! We will continue using our new “Spirit & Psalm” re-

sponses. Our cantors have reported many compliments on them. I hope you enjoy singing the psalms and Gos-pel Acclamations as much as we do. We work hard, but enjoy every minute of the learning process. Did you know that most of the cantors purchased their own CD set of the book for their study? During the Easter season, we will be adding a new Gospel Acclamation; it’s from the “Misa del Mundo” by Jesse Manibusan and Tony Gómez. I did use it at some weekday masses after Christmas, so some of you have heard this exciting acclamation. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. (Colossians 3:16)

Christian Service Depression in Our World This is the final article from the seminar I attended on Depres-sion and Anxiety at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. The in-

formation we received while there was from a licensed professional counselor who works for Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan. It was suggested in our seminar to bring this information back to our parishes and share it via our bulletin. These articles have been shared with you as a way to educate and help remove the stigma associated with people living with depression or anxiety. While depression and anxiety are two differ-ent medical conditions their symptoms can appear similar. Treatments and causes can overlap with both. Depression is the leading cause of disability in the United States for people ages 15 to 44. It affects more than 16 million adults in America, which is just under 7% of our population. Depression increases suicide risk over 12 times. On a national level, 11% of teens will experience a depressive episode in a year. And 20% will experience depression before they reach adulthood and these numbers are increasing. 30% of those teens will develop a substance abuse prob-lem. There are major signs to be aware of for a person who is living in a depressive state. 1. Markedly sad mood. 2. Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities. 3. Hopeless-ness. 4. Change in sleep patterns (over sleep-ing or early waking) 5. Change in appetite (over eating or not hungry) 6. Feeling slowed down or sluggish. 7. Difficulty concentrating or making decisions. 8. Feelings of guilt. 9. Thoughts of suicide. If at least five symptoms are present for most days during a duration of two weeks and are impacting your functioning daily it is sug-gested to seek assistance. Signs of depression in a teen maybe that they are more withdrawn and quiet. They find reason to avoid food or are eating less. They have a loss of interest in activities and hob-bies, like withdrawing from volunteering or social events. They have failing grades at school. A sense of hopelessness. A regular response of, “I’m just tired” or “I’m bored” might mask or cover for depression. Teen depression may also present itself as irritabil-ity, anger and/or agitation, which is more common in boys. Again, what can we do to help? Let them know that God loves them and that you are praying for them. Seek help though someone licensed to treat depression. This can be done through Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan (855-882-2736). All of us, especial-ly teens will go through rough patches in are life. Ups and downs are normal to go through, but when it is persistent and there is a change in personality or behavior it is best to refer someone, even if you are unsure.

On Holy Saturday, after dusk, is called Easter Vigil. We celebrate the final phase of the Triduum which is Jesus’ Resurrec-tion. Jesus was laid to rest and resurrected 3 days after His death on Easter. At the Easter Vigil, we celebrate the history of our faith by recalling readings from the Old Testament leading us to our Salvation His-tory, the promise of eternal life to all who believe. We start in the dark and light can-dles to represent God’s creation bringing us from the darkness into light. We initiate into the Catholic Faith those who have studied in the RCIA program throughout the year. We welcome 5 new members into our Community this year. Two will be baptized and all 5 will be making their First Communion and Confirmation for full initiation into the Catholic Faith. The church is decorated with beautiful color, flowers and full of life in celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection! Please take in all the sights, sounds and smells (Lots of incense is used) during Holy Week to enhance your faith journey and truly walk with Christ throughout Lent and Holy Week!
