2nd Sunday of Lent

Find the Missal (Ordinary of the Mass) at 150 in Oramos Cantando/We Pray in Song

First Reading GN 22:1-2, 9A, 10-13, 15-18 God put Abraham to the test. He called to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am!" he replied. Then God said: "Take your son Isaac, your only one,

whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him up as a holocaust on a height that I will point out to you." When

they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. Then he reached out and

took the knife to slaughter his son. But the LORD's messenger called to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!" "Here I am!" he

answered. "Do not lay your hand on the boy," said the messenger. "Do not do the least thing to him. I know now how devoted you are to

God, since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son." As Abraham looked about, he spied a ram caught by its horns in the

thicket. So he went and took the ram and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son. Again the LORD's messenger called to

Abraham from heaven and said: "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me

your beloved son, I will bless you abundantly and make your descendants as countless as the stars of the sky and the sands of the

seashore; your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies, and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall

find blessing— all this because you obeyed my command."

Responsorial Psalm PS 116 R. I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.

Second Reading ROM 8:31B-34

Brothers and sisters: If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but handed him over for us all, how will

he not also give us everything else along with him? Who will bring a charge against God's chosen ones? It is God who acquits us, who

will condemn? Christ Jesus it is who died—or, rather, was raised— who also is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.

Gospel MK 9:2-10

Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his

clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they

were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you,

one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them;

from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus

alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except

when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

El Misal (Ordinario de la Misa) esta en Oramos Cantando/We Pray in Song a Partir de 150

Primera lectura Gn 22, 1-2. 9-13. 15-18

2nd Sunday of Lent

Living Our Faith… Parish Social Ministry It was difficult to reflect on the Transfiguration Sunday in light of Catholic Social Ministry until I asked some of the volunteers what the

feast of the Transfiguration meant to them. One said it was “to change”, another “to become something new”, and the most profound (I

guess it comes with age because he is the oldest in the group! Ha!) said that when “you walk in the steps of Jesus, you don’t fear, and you

know that people see and recognize that you are with Christ.” We can understand how when listening to the voice that came from

heaven, the apostles could recognize the divinity within Jesus that transform their relationship. So what does it mean to us? I can honestly

say that I recognized and experienced a person that had been transformed when I saw Saint Mother Theresa. She walked the talk and

didn’t wait to be asked or wouldn’t submit to fear. When she heard the voice of Christ, she responded on the spot, while we might spend

time discussing how we could best responds to a need, she would just do what needed to be done.

Catholic Social Ministry calls us to respond, yes we can discuss how to best respond but we need to move past the discussion. How have

I fed people that have no food in our community? How have I visited the sick (I have asked for volunteers to create teams to visit the sick

and no one has responded) and dying? How have I been “changed?” Do people really see me as an authentic Catholic? How am I living

up to the expectations of Lent?

Viviendo nuestra fe….

¿Cómo he visitado a los enfermos (he pedido voluntarios

Ministry to the Infirm and Homebound: Please call JP Rodriguez at (713) 473-9484 if you are a Minister of the Eucharist and you

are also taking communion to a person or persons that are homebound. Please have the name, address, and phone number of the person

(persons) you are visiting.

Opportunities for different ministries: We are trying to develop two different ministries to our community. The first ministry is to

create teams of volunteers that will make home visits to infirm and homebound parishioners. This is a great opportunity for a parent to

take a preadolescent and teenage son or daughter to visit some of our homebound brothers and sisters. Please let JP know if you are

interested.

The other ministry is for funerals. We need a team that will work with our clergy as sacristans, servers, lectors, ministers of the

Eucharist, and choir. This is also a very important ministry. Most families cannot take charge of liturgical needs at this time and would

greatly appreciate our community providing the ministers we need. Other times, it is a great opportunity to evangelize as they witness our

involvement as we minister to their needs.

Please call 855-589-5698 to reach the Capitol switchboard, and press 1 to connect to your Senators. Once you are connected to each Senator’s office, please ask the person on the phone to deliver this simple message: “I urge you to support a bipartisan, common-sense, and humane solution for Dreamers: • Protect Dreamers from deportation and provide them with a path to citizenship. • Reject proposals that undermine family immigration or protections for unaccompanied children. • As a Catholic, I know that families are not “chains,” but a blessing to be protected. • Act now to protect Dreamers, our immigrant brothers and sisters.” 2. Please call 855-589-5698 a second time to reach the Capitol switchboard again, and press 2 to connect to your Representative. Once you are connected to the Representative’s office, please ask the person on the phone to deliver the same message as above. After completing your call, please go to http://www.justiceforimmigrants.org to learn more about Dreamers and find other ways to voice your support.

DSF 2018—Instruments of God’s Mercy—The 2018 Diocesan Services Fund began on February 4th throughout the

Archdiocese. Christ calls us to reach those who are sick or in need, to bless them, serve them, and show them mercy. The thousands of

people served by the ministries of the Archdiocese need your compassion and generosity. Your kind gift to DSF enables us to reach out

to people in this parish and throughout the entire archdiocese through more than 60 important programs.

All registered parishioners have received a letter from Cardinal DiNardo, along with a personalized pledge card, inviting you to be

Instruments of God’s Mercy. Pray about your DSF 2018 commitment, then (if you have not already done so) complete the enclosed

pledge card and return it in the mail or drop it in the collection at Mass. You may also go online at www.archgh.org/dsf to make your

donation. Your generosity will allow our Catholic community to continue many vital programs and services. Our parish goal for this

year is once again $60,000.00.
