11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear friends,

June is traditionally the “Month of Brides” and this year, especially, Marriage is at the forefront of the Church’s attention, with the

World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia during September and the XIV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the

Family in October.

Marriage is the foundation of the Family. It is the Sacrament of Family. I want to urge all of our parish families to enter more

deeply into this Sacrament and to invite every family which has yet to celebrate this Sacrament, whatever the situation of their lives

might be, to visit with me to explore and to pray about how they might encounter the Lord in this special way.

Elsewhere in this bulletin, there is an article by Fr. Larry Rice which talks about the Catholic Wedding Ceremony in a way which

highlights some very important aspects of our beliefs about Marriage. I encourage you to read it and to visit the websites of the World

Meeting of Families and the bishops’ website on the Synod. There is also a wealth of information at the bishops’ website for Marriage.

These links can be accessed from the homepage of the parish website http://www.stpiusvchurch.com/ or directly at the addresses below :

St. Pius V Women's Club Calendar - 2015

We would like to thank all parishioners who purchased baked goods from us at our Bake Sale. We would also like to

thank the members for their baking. Thank you all!

Proceeds will be used to help refurbish the chapel chairs. St. Pius V School will join us in undertaking this project.

Our meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month from September through May. Membership is open to any

ladies of the parish. We have a variety of activities including praying the rosary for members' intentions, fundraisers for the

parish and social events. We also take occasional bus trips to visit various sites and to visit former parish priests.

Prayer blankets are always available. Call Grace at 713-645-2987.

All ladies of the parish are invited to join our group!

First Reading Ez 17:22-24 Thus says the Lord GOD: I, too, will take from the crest of the cedar, from its topmost branches tear off a tender shoot, and

plant it on a high and lofty mountain; on the mountain heights of Israel I will plant it. It shall put forth branches and bear fruit, and

become a majestic cedar. Birds of every kind shall dwell beneath it, every winged thing in the shade of its boughs.

And all the trees of the field shall know that I, the LORD, bring low the high tree, lift high the lowly tree, wither up the green

tree, and make the withered tree bloom. As I, the LORD, have spoken, so will I do.

Responsorial Psalm Ps 92 R. Lord, it is good to give thanks to you

Second Reading 2 Cor 5:6-10

Brothers and sisters: We are always courageous, although we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from

the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yet we are courageous, and we would rather leave the body and go home to the Lord.

Therefore, we aspire to please him, whether we are at home or away. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of

Christ, so that each may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil.

Gospel Mk 4:26-34 Jesus said to the crowds: “This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and

would sleep and rise night and day and through it all the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the

land yields fruit, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once,

for the harvest has come.”

He said, “To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that,

when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the

largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade.”

With many such parables he spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it. Without parables he did not speak to

them, but to his own disciples he explained everything in private.

11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Things You Won’t See at a Catholic Wedding by Fr. Larry Rice There are few events in life that are as steeped in tradition as a wedding. And the traditions surrounding weddings

come to us through our families, our friends, our culture, and our religious traditions. But every religious tradition han-

dles weddings differently, and some of the things that people expect to see and hear, are often not part of the Catholic

way of celebrating weddings.

For example, in some traditions, at the conclusion of the procession into the church, the presiding minister may ask,

“Who gives this woman to be married?” And the father of the bride will be expected to respond that he, or he and his

wife, do. At Catholic weddings, it’s presumed that the bride—and the groom for that matter—give themselves to each

other.

If you’ve ever seen a wedding on a television series, you’re probably familiar with the dramatic possibilities that

arise when the minister asks, “If anyone knows any reason why these two should not be wed, let him speak now, or for-

ever hold his peace.” Well, we Catholics don’t do that. In many places, notices of upcoming weddings are published,

allowing anyone with objections to come forward before the couple gets to the altar.

Another touching moment in most TV weddings is the phrase, “With this ring, I thee wed.” For us Catholics, the

moment of the marriage is the exchange of consent, and the speaking of the vows. The ring is a symbol of the union that

has already taken place. We bless wedding rings, and they are exchanged with the phrase, “Take this ring as a sign of my

love and fidelity, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Another thing we don’t say at Catholic weddings is “I now pronounce you man and wife.” We believe that the cou-

ple becomes husband and wife not because the minister declares them to be such, but because they have given their con-

sent and made their vows to each other. The function of the priest or deacon is to preside and witness these vows, not to

make the marriage happen. Through all of the ceremony, the emphasis is on what the bride and groom do, and not on

anyone else.

This celebration of love and unity mirrors the love of God for his people, and should inspire all of us to be more

loving, more committed people.
