  • DE MELLO FOR KIDSOF ALL AGES

    Take It Slow

When you get mad, what do you do?

Do you kick or yell or cry or pout?

Those things might have you feel a

little better for a minute, but they

    don’t accomplish much. If you

really want to take care of a

problem, it’s a lot better to talk about it. If

someone makes you mad, stay calm and tell that

person how you feel. Then listen to what they

have to say. When you follow the Bible’s advise,

    you’ll solve your problems first.

When I get angry, I won’t kick or pout -

I’ll just do my best to figure things out.

    ANNUAL ST. PIUS XPARISH

    SKATING PARTY

Our Parish’s Annual Skating Party is usually held on Boxing Day, December 26. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this event will not be held this year. We are disappointed, but hopefully this event will be held next year!

    16TH ANNUAL VIGILTO REMEMBER

    THOSE WHO HAVEDIED BY SUICIDE

On December 13th, 2020, we will hold the 16th annual vigil to remember those who died by suicide and to support survivors of suicide loss. Due to COVID-19, we will be hosting the vigil virtually from St. Mark’s Anglican Church 7:00 pm – 7:45 pm. The livestream joining information is https://fb.me/e/1FZLjTVUV .

For more information, please contact Kim at [email protected] or Juanita at [email protected].

FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

    AND

Saturday, December 12 is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and is also the National Day of Prayer for Indigenous People.

The federal government has just tabled promised legislation to incorporate the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) into Canadian legislation. The government of British Columbia has already done so. A similar bill, but from a private member, was passed in the House of Commons in 2018, but died when the election was called. Now the government is proposing a very similar bill, which also responds to one of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action.

There year’s Reconciliation Service for East St. John’s parishes will be held on Tuesday, December 15, 2020, at 7:00 pm at Mary Queen of Peace Church.

Let us recall that our Lord God is far more willing to offer forgiveness than are we generally willing to accept this sacred gift.

Four priests will be available. A short thematic prayer service will precede the reception of the sacrament. The simple formula for individual confession used in previous years will be used. Participants will be invited to focus on a special area with need for healing after a prayerful account of conscience. Time for persons who want an extended conversation with a priest is possible after the Service.

  • FATHER EARL DREAMS:

Our parish Christmas Season preparations continue to unfold. Mass attendance pre-registration is complete. We are full to allowed capacity for all four Masses. We’ve persons on a waiting list. There could be some movement of persons off/on the list depending on the travel plans of some pre-registered persons. Another update on this point will follow next week.

We’re near confirming that the 4:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass will be ‘live streamed’. This will allow more parishioners to participate in Mass at ‘their parish church’ [Hurrah!]

    SAINTS SPEAK

Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest thing right and doing it all for love. . . Remember that nothing is small in the eyes of God. Do all that you do with love.St. Therese of Lisieux, 1873-1899, Doctor of the Church

Only love overcomes the fragmentation of human nature."St. Maximus the Confessor, d. 662, Christian monk, theologian, scholar

The most perfect prayer and the worthiest work of all is the outcome of a quiet mind. The quieter it is, the more powerful, the worthier, the deeper, the more telling and more perfect prayer. The quiet mind is one which nothing weighs on, nothing worries, which is free from ties and all self-seeking, is wholly merged into the will of God and dead to its own.Meister Eckhart, 1260-1328, Rhineland Mystic, theologian and philosopher

    DONATIONS OF

    FLOWERS OR PLANTS

This is a great opportunity to remember a loved one by donating a Christmas plant or flowers. This year we have chosen red poinsettias for the Church. So think of that option and please have them dropped off by Saturday, December 19, 2020.

Monetary donations are certainly appreciated to allay the costs of the plants which are ordered for the occasion.

Thank you for your help and support.

    CHRISTMAS HAMPER

    DONATIONS

Our Parish is now preparing for the Christmas Hampers. Last year we distributed approximately 130 hampers and we expect a similar number of requests this year. If you are considering financially supporting this activity, it would be very much appreciated. Please mark an envelope CHRISTMAS HAMPER . Please include your name, address and envelope number.

    WALKING WITH THE MARGINALIZED

This week the marginalized group that we are going to focus on is persons and families challenged by dementia/Alzheimers. This can be especially heart breaking considering the plight of the many of our seniors living in our nursing homes during the covid crisis.

How to Support Somebody with Dementiaat ChristmasChristmas means many things to many people—typically a time for food, family and festivities. But for people affected by dementia it can be more difficult. So, with help from our online community Talking Point, we’ve compiled a few tips to help you make the most out of the festive season. Here are some tips to help you support your loved one (and yourself) this Christmas.

    1. Put Decorations Up GraduallyIntroduce the Christmas environment slowly.

    2. Keep it Simple and FamiliarSomeone with dementia may feel overwhelmed over the Christmas period, so it's best not to overdo it. Keeping the day's activities low key will help your loved one to relax. Sticking to a familiar routine is also a good idea where possible.

    3. Get Everyone InvolvedThere are many ways to involve people living with dementia at Christmas time – from something as simple as hanging a bauble on the tree to doing a spot of Christmas shopping. The important thing is that they feel included.

    4. Create a Quiet RoomA large number of guests can be overwhelming, so ask family and friends to spread out their visits over the festive period. If things do get

busy, designate one room in your house a ‘quietroom’ where your loved one can relax withoutloud noise.

    5. Bring Back Old MemoriesWhether it’s an old song they used to enjoy or a classic Christmas film, find something fun you can take part in. Making a family photo album or memory box could be a nice way to spend time together.

    6. Be Mindful of FoodAlthough many people eat a lot at Christmas, a full plate can be daunting for someone who has difficulties eating. If you're doing the serving, try not to overload your loved one’s plate.

    7. Be FlexibleIt’s easy to get caught up in Christmas traditions, but your festive season might begin to look different as dementia progresses. It's always worth having a plan B, and be prepared to change your plans if a particular element isn't working.
