Don Antonio's Dispatch…

I hope to see you all at our Mardi Gras Dinner Dance on Saturday, 10 February. You don’t have to be married to attend, but if you are married, we’d love to honor your marriage at that dance. If you can, submit your wedding picture to the parish and it will be part of the decorations of the Bishop Povish Community Room. Believe it or not, Lent starts next week. Ash Wednesday is 14 February. I have already had a few questions about Ash Wednesday falling on St. Valentine’s Day. No, you are dispensed neither from fasting nor from abstaining from meat because Ash Wednesday is on St. Valentine’s Day. I would suggest doing all the chocolate and nice meal celebration on Fat Tuesday. Lent also begins our Soup Suppers. Alice Fritz is organizing the weekly events, but I know we can also use volunteers to provide some non-meat soup. If you or a group you’re with is interested, please call our parish office. We also had a “bring your own wine” option, that seemed to mysteriously increase the attendance at soup suppers. You don’t have to bring alcohol, and we don’t want anyone drinking drunk or buzzed, but if you’d like, I think this tradition may continue. This year I think I’m going to have a theme to my weekly Lenten reflections (last year they were very spur of the moment). Our theme for this year’s reflections will be “Praying Like Jesus.” We may have one week or two off this topic, but I’ll plan on sticking mainly to this theme. We also have Stations of the Cross which follows my talk. The Stations I use were composed by St. Alphonsus de Liguori, and are familiar to most people who have prayed the Stations. It’s a beautiful way to spend your Friday evenings, and we’ll begin the Friday after Ash Wednesday, 16 February. See you there!!

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 4, 2018

ST. PIUS X CATHOLIC SCHOOL

FAITH MOVING FORWARD Website: www.spxparish.com

Lighting a Fire at SPX

This past we week we celebrated Catholic Schools Week. It was a wonderful week filled with prayer, worship, a Grandparents’ breakfast, and funny dress up days. I always try to blend fun with our faith in hopes that the beauty of what we are doing is learned and not just lectured. Currently, I am in the process of reading a book by Bishop Barron titled: To Light a Fire on the Earth. One of the ways he tells us to spread the word of God is to explain the beauty in it and not necessarily the theology in it. Sure the theology must come, but hooking someone into following God can only come by showing them the beauty in why we love it so much. Let me explain it like this: I cannot tell teachers how to lead this school in my absence. I cannot sit them down and go through the procedures and protocols to ensure that things such as speeches, presentations, meetings, recess, responsibilities, and all the other things we have to do to operate, as if I were here doing it with them. But, what I can do is show them the beauty in making a difference in the children’s lives, how I try and reach out to all the families and greet them, and how to feel the Holy Spirit in this building and inside of each of them. Over time something as complex as a Mass for grandparents followed by a pancake breakfast runs perfectly. People were complementing me left and right with how I run things, how everything is done so perfectly here, and how my staff is so wonderful. What they do not know is that I was out sick and had ZERO input into the grandparent’s Mass. Teachers did everything and what people are seeing is the beauty in it because teachers saw the beauty in it first. Leadership sometimes means to light a fire but not to keep it going; others are supposed to do that. This week I am looking forward to getting some data about how our students are doing on their academics. They are taking their NWEA and ACT assessments and my hope is to share some successful news with you in the weeks ahead. Keep the Faith (1 Timothy 6:12) R.J. Kaplan Principal

“Keep your children connected to their faith” There is no CCD February 7, so all parents and catechists may join our speaker Craig Pohl in the parish center. Craig will be discussing Apologetics. February study is: Jesus. Parents may register their children anytime-- there is no deadline to learning about Jesus. Please keep our second grade students in your prayers as they begin their sacramental prep for Reconciliation and Eucharist.

The Divine Mercy Apostolate is a Eucharist Apostolate active at SPX. You may join this Apostolate at any time. The study does not build on the previous week. You will need the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a bible and the first manual and of course, the Diary of St. Faustina. The

Chaplet is sung on the first Thursday of the month with the school children at 9:45 a.m. in the church. Check the bulletin and join us. Our next cenacle meeting is Monday, February 6th from 6-7:30 p.m. in the parish center. We will be in week 16 in the manual. The extra reading is in the diary, pages 160-169.

So, what’s this Morning Glory Retreat all about anyway? Well it’s about a 3- month retreat to prep for Consecration to Mary shortened to an individual 33 day retreat.; Mary’s special role in drawing us into the heart of Jesus; and, Mary’s important mission given to her by Jesus at the foot of the cross. It helps us understand how important Mary is to our Catholic faith and the understanding of Jesus’ deep love for each

of us. We will read about four great saints, their love for Mary and their Consecration to her. (three of them male). Our next Morning Glory retreat will begin with the intro the week of March 19 and Consecration day will be on May 13. Please keep this opportunity in prayer and continue to look to the bulletin for reminders.

We are beginning a Mary book study, February 14 on Ash Wednesday. The group meets at 11:30 a.m. in the parish center. We will be reading the book called, “The Life of The Blessed Virgin Mary” from the Visions of Anne Catherine Emmerich. You can pick up the book at Barnes & Nobles, Wal-Mart, Google play for under $20.00 and TAN Publishing who has the ebook for .99. The group will only

meet once a month. The dates are: February 14, March 14, April 11, May 9 and June 13. It’s ok if you have to miss. Check the website under Adult Formation for the reading assignments. https://spxparish.com/book-study-1
