Dear Friends,

One of my seminary professors used to say that as Catholics we are a “both/and” people.  For example, we believe that Jesus is both God and man.  We believe that the Church is both a divine ins tu on and at the same  me made up of human beings.  We believe that the Blessed Virgin Mary is both Virgin and Mother.

I was reminded of my seminary professor’s adage this past week as Bishop Tobin created quite a s r with just one tweet.  If you’re not aware of the controversy, Bishop Tobin tweeted a warning to Catholics about Pride Month.  He wrote, “A reminder that Catholics should not support or a end LGBTQ ‘Pride Month’ events held in June.  They promote a culture and en‐courage ac vi es that are contrary to the Catholic faith and morals.  They are especially harmful to children.”

Allow me to both support and cri que Bishop Tobin’s tweet.  On the one hand, I agree with him.  While as Catholics we are called to love and respect every human person regardless of race, reli‐gion or sexual orienta on, this does not mean that we are sup‐posed to embrace ac ons and lifestyles that are contrary to Chris an morality.  Yes, every human person is created in the image and likeness of God, and every human person possesses ines mable dignity.  And so it goes without saying that we are called to love and respect people who iden fy as LGBTQ.  How‐ever, we believe that “God created them male and fe‐male” (Genesis 1:27).  The bishop is correct, then, in telling us that we should not par cipate in ac vi es that promote life‐styles that are contrary to Chris an morality.

Now, let me offer my cri que.  We are living in the throes of a horrible sexual abuse scandal in the Church.  Many Catholics have already been alienated from the Church because of the sins of priests and bishops.  Children were harmed by the evil ac ons of the clergy.  If Bishop Tobin felt compelled to tweet anything, I think he should have at least used different language than “harmful to children.”  Immediately, when people read those words, their thoughts turned to all the children who were harmed by clergy.  Also, I wonder if the bishop’s tweet actually drew more a en on to Pride Month and the events surround‐ing it.  I’m guessing most of you didn’t even know that it was Pride Month.  A er all, for Catholics, June is the month of the Sacred Heart.  That ought to be our focus.

We cannot allow ourselves to be silenced by those who disagree with us, just as we cannot try to silence them.  We live in a country where people are free to speak.  However, I wonder if some Catholics who had no inten on of a ending Pride events will now do so out of spite, especially since so many Catholics currently have nega ve feelings towards the Church.

I love and respect Bishop Tobin.  He is a good and faithful bishop who loves the Lord and the Church.  He is not only my bishop, but I also consider him a friend.  However, I wonder if it would have been be er if the bishop simply didn’t tweet anything about Pride Month.

Pentecost Sunday Najim’s Notes

SYMBOLS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WATER Water holds a lot of symbolic value, during Baptism where the Holy Spirit is present, we are reborn.

ANOINTING OIL We are anointed with oil just as Christ was anointed with the Holy Spirit's presence. The oil serves as both a symbol and a reminder of the Holy Spirit.

FIRE While water signifies birth and the fruitfulness of life given in the Holy Spirit, fire symbolizes the transforming energy of the Holy Spirit's actions. Jesus will say of the Spirit: "I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled!" In the form of tongues "as of fire," the Holy Spirit rests on the disciples on the morning of Pentecost and fills them with himself The spiritual tradition has retained this symbolism of fire as one of the most expressive images of the Holy Spirit's actions. "Do not quench the Spirit."

CLOUD AND LIGHT In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit worked through clouds and light to reveal or obscure God's messages.

THE SEAL The Holy Spirit prepares the heart and mind to be in perfect harmony with Jesus by placing a seal, which is a permanent mark on our souls.

THE HAND Jesus heals the sick and blesses little children by laying hands on them. In his name the apostles will do the same. Where hands are laid in order to heal it is said to be the Holy Spirit that is the healing agent.

THE FINGER Holy Spirit is sometimes depicted as the "finger of the Father's right hand."

THE DOVE One of the most familiar images of the spirit is a dove. There is a well-known bible passage/biblical event associated with this symbol found in Matthew 3:16, "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the wa-ter: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him."

THE GIFT OF GIFTS... ...the Sanctifier, the Interior Master, the Finger of God, Paraclete, Sweet

Guest of the soul, the bond of love between Father and Son, Consoler and Counselor, the Soul-life giving principle of the Church, the Light from on high —all of these are descriptive titles of the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the most Blessed Trinity. Let us venture into deep waters as we strive to get to

know, to fall in love and establish a deep and dynamic rapport and relationship with the Holy Spirit. He desires to enter into deep communion and

friendship with you as soon as you open your mind and heart to His Presence. Now is the time!

Imitate Mary’s Love of the Holy Spirit Let us invoke Mary most Holy and beg for her intercession that we might be more open and docile to the workings of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The Blessed Virgin Mary was, at all times and places, open to the workings and operations of the Holy Spirit. However, the Holy Spirit intervened in three key moments in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary:

1. THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION 2. THE VIRGINAL CONCEPTION 3. AND PENTECOST—THE BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH

In the Immaculate Conception of Mary in the womb of her mother Saint Anne, Mary was preserved from the stain of Original Sin by the working of the Holy Spirit.

In the Virginal Conception, in which Jesus was conceived in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it was through the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit that Mary conceived Jesus. (In Hebrew the shekinah—the overshadowing).

Fifty days after the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead–Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, but through the presence, fasting, prayers, and good example of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For that reason, Saint Louis de Montfort enthusiastically asserts: “Those who love Mary, the Holy Spirit flings Himself into their souls.”

Mary is the Daughter of God the Father, the Mother of God the Son, and Mary is the Mystical Spouse of the Holy Spirit. To love the Blessed Virgin

Mary is to open a floodgate of graces and the powerful invasion of the Holy Spirit in your life.

Let us pray often: “Come Holy Spirit, come through the Heart of Mary.”

St. Pius X Parish MISSION COOPERATIVE APPEAL

The Propagation of the Faith office of our diocese has invited the Diocese of Kumbakonam, India to speak to us about their missionary activities and challenges. Accordingly, Rev. Benjamin Franklin will be speaking to us during all the Masses on the weekends of June29/30. This diocese, started in 1899 in the State of Tamil Nadu, India, had an area of 7824 sq. km and a Catholic population of 213,000 (6% of the population). It is served by 212 diocesan and 63 religious priests, 580 nuns and 12 trained lay catechists. The diocese has certain concrete and meaningful goals for a New Evangelization in the III millennium, like; 1. Establishing 10 more new parishes, each with a new church and

rectory. At present, this diocese has 93 parishes and 618 mission-stations. Many of the missions are so large that they have to be made independent parishes with a resident priest. Most Catholics have no vehicle to travel to the main parish church for Sunday Mass. But the people are unable to give financial support, for such pressing pastoral projects.

2. Enabling 480 nuns and 2155 Catholic Teachers in charge of cate-

chetical, educational, medical and social ministries throughout this rural diocese, to educate the children in the Catholic faith and to help the people, particularly the poor and the marginalized for their integral development.

3. Projecting the healing touch and loving care of the Divine Healer through our diocesan hospital for lepers and the many rural medi-cal clinics by nuns.

And much more….
