ENGLISH FESTIVAL PROGRAM 2019

If you are traveling to Zona Auditorium in the Butler Institute of American Art or Butler North—

Exit Kilcawley, and turn left toward Wick Avenue. After passing Tod Hall, you’ll see the Butler Institute of American Art on your left. Enter the Butler Institute of American Art (you’ll see a café and the gift shop entrance).

• If you are going to Zona Auditorium, take the hallway to the right.

• If you are going to Butler North, walk between Tod Hall and Butler Institute of American Art. Go right and enter Butler North from University Plaza.

If you are traveling to DeBartolo Hall’s English Department Conference Room (2nd floor) or Auditorium 132—

Exit Kilcawley Center, and turn right toward Fifth Avenue. DeBartolo Hall is the red brick building between the Recreation Center and the M60 Fifth Avenue Parking Deck. If you are traveling to the English Department Conference Room, take the stairs or elevator to the second floor. Turn right after exiting the staircase or left after exiting the elevator and enter the English Department Suite. The Conference Room is the glass enclosed meeting room straight ahead and slightly to your left. If you are traveling to Auditorium 132, prior to reaching the elevators, make a sharp right and walk up the short flight of stairs near the Dean’s office. Keep walking until you reach the end of the hall and turn left. Auditorium 132 will be at the end of the hall.

If you are traveling to Cushwa Hall B100 or B112—These rooms are located in the basement (lower level) of Cushwa Hall. Exit Kilcawley facing the center of campus looking toward downtown Youngstown. From the central campus, walk downhill toward the building next to the parking deck (Cushwa). As you face the building, walk along the sidewalk on the left side of the building, and enter the doors at the bottom of the hill.

ENGLISH FESTIVAL PROGRAM 2019

If you are traveling to Maag Library—Exit Kilcawley, and turn left toward Wick Avenue. After passing Tod Hall, you’ll see Maag Library to your right. Enter Maag using the main doors across from the Butler Institute of American Art. Walk past the circulation desk, turn right, and take the elevators up to the floor where your session is located. Or take the stairs. It’s only one level up to the third floor.

If you are traveling to McKay Auditorium, Beeghly Hall (BCOE)—Exit Kilcawley Center into the main campus core and walk south toward the M60 Fifth Avenue Parking Deck. Pass between the parking deck and Cushwa Hall to Lincoln Ave. Cross the street to Beeghly Hall. McKay Auditorium is the one-story extension that juts out from Beeghly Hall.

If you are traveling to Trustees Room, Tod Hall—Exit Kilcawley Center into the main campus core and turn left. Walk along the upper sidewalk toward Wick Avenue. Tod Hall is the next building, right before you reach The Butler. Enter through the front staircase, not the side entrance of the building. The Trustees Room is the glass enclosed room directly in front of you as you enter the building.

If you are traveling to Schwebel Auditorium, Moser Hall—Exit Kilcawley facing the center of campus looking down toward downtown Youngstown. Walk along the path down the hill toward William B. Rayen School of Engineering (building with the red iron sculptures in front). Shows on campus map as Moser Hall. Enter through the front door for the second floor. Turn right if you have chosen the left staircase; turn left if you have chosen the right staircase. The Schwebel Auditorium is located on the second floor between the two staircases.

If you are traveling to the Planetarium—Turn left out of Kilcawley Center’s lower level. Pass the fountain and Tod Hall on the left. Turn slight right to walk between Maag Library and Ward Beecher. Enter Ward Beecher through the double doors across from Jones Hall and the loading zone by Maag Library. Once inside Ward Beecher, the planetarium is just inside on the left.

Special Sessions for Teachers, Librarians, and Parents

The English Festival offers opportunities for parents, teachers, and librarians to hear the featured authors.

Look for the fountain pen throughout the program to find when and where the featured authors will be presenting.

You are also welcome at any of the large-group events scheduled in the afternoons. In those sessions, you’ll join the hundreds of students here for the Festival.

Donating to the

YSU English FestivalThough the University makes a significant contribution in terms of the services and space it provides to our program, and the school registration fee generates part of the money needed to meet the operating expenses that such a large undertaking entails, the Festival depends upon the generosity of the many firms, institutions, and individuals who help us with those expenses and who provide the prizes that are an important ingredient in the Festival’s continuing success.

The Festival Committee is grateful to those supporters and solicits the donations of others who appreciate the Festival’s impact upon our community. To make a donation, write a check made out to YSU Foundation and designate that check to one or more of the Festival Funds listed below. Or give electronically by navigating to the YSU Foundation website (www.ysufoundation.com) and clicking on “Give Now.” Then choose “College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences.” In the “Gift Details or Comments” box, choose one or more of the following Festival funds.

The Festival Committee is grateful to those supporters and solicits the support of others who appreciate the Festival’s impact upon our community. You are invited to contribute to any or all of the following funds, each of which directly benefits the Festival:

♦ YSU English Festival Restricted Gifts: Contributions to this fund are used to provide cash and other prizes for students, and to pay for normal costs of the Festival, including printing, mailing, travel, and staffing. This fund is the general operating budget for each year’s Festival.

♦ YSU Thomas and Carol Gay Memorial Lecturer Endowment: Created upon the death of Dr. Carol Gay on December 18, 1985, the Carol Gay Memorial Lecturer Fund was established by her husband, Professor Thomas Gay. Upon the retirement of Professor Thomas Gay from YSU in 1994, the fund was renamed the Thomas and Carol Gay English Festival Lecturer Fund. The Festival Committee added “Memorial” upon the death of Prof. Gay on July 7, 2000. Thomas and Carol Gay were the founders of the English Festival and served as its first two chairs.

ENGLISH FESTIVAL PROGRAM 2019

Each year the fund sponsors the Festival’s featured author, a prominent writer of books for young people, who is invited to talk to students, teachers, librarians, and parents in sessions throughout the day and who is identified as the Thomas and Carol Gay Memorial Lecturer.

♦ YSU Candace Gay Memorial Endowment: Established in 1978 by Professors Thomas and Carol Gay in memory of their thirteen-year-old daughter, Candace McIntyre Gay, this Fund supports the Candace Gay Memorial Essay Contest. The winners of this contest exhibit distinctive writing ability. More than $2,500 in prizes is distributed each year.

♦ YSU James A. Houck Memorial Endowment: The English Festival Committee created this fund in memory of Professor James A. Houck, a founding member of the original English Festival Committee. This fund supports special Festival events and activities that are unique from year to year, but in most cases, the fund sponsors a “James Houck Lecturer,” who delivers presentations to students and adults at the Festival.

♦ YSU Jeremy Salvner Memorial Music Awards Endowment: The family of Jeremy Salvner created this fund in his memory upon his death in 2005. This fund supports prizes for the Jeremy Salvner Memorial Music Contest, in which students compose original music based on one of the English Festival books.

♦ YSU English Festival Endowment: The English Festival Committee created this fund during its 35th year to celebrate the 100,000th student attending the three-day Festival. This fund was established so that the Festival may continue to be an area attraction for middle and high school students for years to come. Through the generosity of the estate of David S. and Helga Ives as well as other distinguished donors, this fund met its initial goal. The English Festival Committee appreciates future support of the Festival to keep costs low for participants.

All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. If donating by check, send to the following address:

Festival JudgesWriting contest judges are provided by YSU and by all the schools attending the Festival. Each judge not only has read all of the Festival books but has also participated in a training session on holistic or trait scoring methods of essay evaluation.

Each paper is read and scored holistically by several judges. Papers with the highest scores are then read again and rated with a trait scoring system. The highest scoring papers from those readings are judged the winners. Entries in the Candace Gay Memorial Essay Contest are judged by the English Festival Committee using similar procedures. Submissions for art, music, the graphic essay, and the “Do a Sheinkin” contest are reviewed by equally qualified judges.

The time and effort that the judges spend in preparing themselves for the Festival and the work that they perform at the Festival are crucial to the Festival’s success.

Festival MonitorsEach year the Festival Committee is indebted to the many teachers, parents, and friends who serve as Festival monitors, facilitating the smooth operation of the Festival. The Committee relies on such volunteers and is grateful to them for their service. Special thanks to:
