Dear Parishioners,
Those who have donated blood know that the process
requires great preparation. Is it free from disease that might
cause problems for the recipient? The donor's vital signs-
temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and iron levels-are
tested. If potential donors are unwell, they cannot donate to
another. Finally, the careful process of the donation itself en-
sures the safety of both donor and recipient. The gift of life is
sustained and renewed.
As we hear today's readings, on the Solemnity of the
Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, we may think of this
careful process. In today's gospel, the disciples are concerned
about preparations for Passover. Those detailed preparations
are accomplished, and the Passover begins. Jesus, himself, has
prepared the disciples for this moment and the saving acts that
followed the Last Supper. But the primary focus of the gospel
is on Jesus, consecrating bread and wine as his Body and
Blood, offered on our behalf to the Father. This consecration is
celebrated over and over from that day to this in the Mass. In
the Eucharistic celebration, we recall not only the Last Supper,
but also those saving acts that followed: the suffering, death
and glorious Resurrection of Jesus.
And why should we put such an emphasis on prepara-
tion today? As Catholics, we approach the mystery of salva-
tion in Christ more as a continual preparation for eternity,
rather than as a one-time accomplishment. We see sort of a
metaphor of this, for instance, in the way we approach the
Eucharist. No matter where we are in life, no matter how holy
we are, the church calls us to fast for at least an hour before
receiving Christ's Body and Blood. We are called to have the
right heart and mind ourselves before receiving. We are to be
without serious sin, repentant, aware of our need for salvation,
trusting in the Lord's love, hopeful and joyful in him. We are
encouraged to prepare ourselves by praying or reading the
Scriptures.
Once this type of preparation has taken place, the life-
sustaining donation can commence-if we pick up our analogy
to a medical blood transfusion. Jesus, the worthy and pure do-
nor, offers his life-saving Body and pours out his purifying
Blood for us. We are renewed, so that, following his example,
we can carry our cross, and offer our own body and blood in
service and love to the Father and our neighbor.
God Love Ya!

Pre-Jordan classes
In preparation for Baptism Pre-Jordan classes are held the
third Monday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Church. The
parents of the child are required to attend the class; god-
parents are also welcome but not required to attend.
Please call the rectory to make arrangements for the
Baptism and to attend the class. After you have attended
the class and acquired certificates of eligibility for your
godparents, you may then call the rectory for an appoint-
ment to book the date of your choosing. The next
scheduled classes are:

Dear Parish Family of St. Richard,
It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you after eight
years of service to this wonderful faith-filled parish
community that I will be resigning as Director of Faith
Formation for St. Richard parish effective June 27, 2015.
Please be assured that I will do whatever is necessary to
help make the transition as smooth as possible for my re-
placement.
I have been very happy here at St. Richard, and was not
seeking a change. However, an unexpected opportunity
presented itself in recent weeks, and after prayerful
consideration and discernment, I have accepted a full-
time position as Director of Religious Education for my
home parish of St. Albert the Great in Huntingdon Valley,
PA. I believe this opportunity is best for my family.
This decision is bitter sweet, in that while I look forward
to being more present to my family, my new ministry, and
its challenges, I will miss you and the parish community
that I have come to love these past eight years. If I have
helped you in any way to grow in your faith and love of
God, then I consider my time here a success. I ask you to
remember me in your prayers and be assured of my
prayers for you.
Gratefully yours,
Dennis M. Mueller
Director of Faith Formation
Bits & Bytes: Cathedra It looks like a letter is missing on this word. Most
of us are familiar with the term "cathedral," but
not "cathedra." In actuality, it is from the cathe-
dra that the cathedral derives its name.
The cathedra is the chair of the local bishop or
archbishop. Therefore the cathedral is the
church in which the bishop’s chair is located.
Ordinarily it is more imposing than a normal
presider’s chair. It represents the teaching
authority of the bishop.
Fathers Day is June 21st
There is a special envelope that
you can remember your father
in a special way which will be
placed on the altar for all
Masses that weekend. They can
be placed in the collection
basket or dropped off at the Rectory anytime before the
21st so they can be placed on the altar in time.

Affordable Catholic Education May
Be Within Reach! While we know that Catholic schools offer an excellent education and moral formation for their students, some families opt for other schools—public, charter, private, or homeschools—due to the lower price tag. Still, perhaps you wish that your child(ren) had the benefit of attending a Catholic school—just look at our standardized test scores, which have risen steadily at Archdiocesan elementary schools over the past few years!
In partnership with the Connelly Foundation, Saint Pio Catholic Regional School now has
the opportunity to offer
Tuition Transfer Grants
for new students who register in grades 2-6.
Any student currently attending a public, charter, home, or private school
who registers to attend Saint Pio Catholic Regional School is eligible to receive a
three-year tuition grant: $1,000 in Year One $500 in Year Two $300 in Year Three
A total savings of $1,800 for your family!
A limited number of grants are available in each grade, and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis beginning April 7, 2015.
While these grants are only available to new transfer students who register at Saint Pio
Catholic Regional School, they will also benefit current families by filling empty classroom seats, which increases the school’s efficiency and
revenue, and minimizes future tuition increases.
Full classrooms are the surest path to
affordable tuition for everyone!
If you are interested in a Tuition Transfer Grant or in registering at Saint Pio Catholic Regional School, please contact Marianne Garnham, Principal at (215) 467-5430 to schedule a
meeting or a school tour.
