EASTER SUNDAY AT SAINT RAPHAEL Dear Friends, As many of you know by now, Pope Francis has appointed me the ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Belleville. I thank the many people from St. Raphael who have contacted me since the announcement on April 3 for their support and encouragement.

I will remain at St. Raphael as your pastor for several more months. Normally there is a transi on period from when a bishop re res and the arrival of a new bishop. In the unique circumstances of this me, we are wai ng to see what happens with the coronavirus before se ng a date for my ordina on as a Catholic bishop and my installa on in the Cathedral of St. Peter in Belleville. It is important that people are safe; so we will wait and see when it will be safe for a public liturgy. In the mean me, we will form a transi on team for our parish including leaders of different organiza ons. Our goal is to use this me well and prepare the parish for the future. I hope to know more about what the Archdiocese of Chicago would like us to do soon a er Easter. With the departure of Fr. Brian Welter for his new work as Director of the Ins tute of Priestly Forma on and then my departure for the Diocese of Belleville, I realize there will be some large changes for the parish in a short amount of me. Yet, I trust that Jesus is leading us and that the Risen Christ is saying to us today: “Peace be with you.” In some ways I feel we are going to have to “relaunch” the parish once we can reopen our church. There will need to be a new effort at community outreach. I hope that as people reflect on issues of life, health, and family for these weeks, they will be drawn to a deeper faith and seek the community that we experience as the Church. I’m grateful for the support of so many people of our parish during this unse ling me. Thank you to all who con nue suppor ng our parish through your dona ons, many of which we receive via the US mail. CHRISTIAN ART BY EL GRECO Last May fi y people heard a presenta on at St. Raphael by art historian Rebecca Long featuring the art of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, more widely known as “El Greco (1541-1614). His pain ngs o en depict events in the life of Christ or the saints. The Art Ins tute of Chicago is hos ng a major exhibit of his works.
