FROM THE PASTOR…
Dear Parishioners, I want to acknowledge the pinch-hitters who are filling in for me while I’m away for a confer-ence and for vacation leave. First, Monsignor Maks, who has been so loyal and engaged at our parish for so many years. We are truly blessed to be recipients of his regular presence. Second, retired Maryknoll missionary Father Bob Lloyd, resident within our parish boundaries. His priestly ministry here has edified so many, and he is so gracious (and pro-active) about lending a hand whenever needed. He’ll be doing the Saturday 5 pm and Sunday Spanish Mass for the next few weeks. This Sunday, we welcome Father Marek Sobczak, CM, a Polish Vincentian who pastors St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Greenpoint. This past year, I taught religion to third graders at his Academy, and I have to say how his school is a very happy and very Catholic one. Also joining us this weekend (11 am Mass) is Father Ed Smith, a personal friend of Sister Christine. Fr. Ed is now retired and marking his 50th Jubilee in the priesthood. For the following few weekends, the 11 am will be handled by Father Frank Mann, whose writings you have enjoyed The Tablet. Father Mann, who is a vocal partisan for animal rights, is currently in a special ministry. Last but not least, a thank you to the Permanent Deacons who will also offer their services (baptisms, weddings) while I’m away. These include Deacon Carlos Martinez of Greenpoint and Deacon Carlos Troche of Woodside. They say deacons are the unsung heroes of the Catholic Church nowadays, and parish priests know full-well their important contribution to our life of faith. Two additional notes: our summer Mission Appeal will take place on July 17/18, and the speaker will be Mary Stevenson, who left a business career to direct a mission in El Salvador. I think you will find her story edifying and faith-filled. Some background information begins to appear in English and Spanish in this bulletin. There is no parish-support envelope for this appeal, so please come prepared that weekend to help the missions through that second collection. Finally, the Korean community is saluting Father Luke today with an event honoring his ordi-nation anniversary. If you run into him, congratulate him on 14 happy years in the priesthood. He’ll soon be leaving for a mission trip to Bolivia. And now, as Harry Houdini said when they locked him in a trunk, “I’m outta here”. - Father Jerry Jecewiz

PETER’S PENCE This week our diocese takes up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of char-ity to those who are suffering, through participating in this weekend’s second collection.

SUMMER MISSION APPEAL - July 18th/19th (second collection) Mission Appeal from COAR, a School and Orphanage in El Salvador COAR, which stands for the Community Oscar Arnulfo Romero, will be making an upcoming mission appeal and asking for your donations, prayers, and interest. COAR is located in Zaragoza, El Salvador. It was founded in 1980 by a Cleveland Diocese Mis-sion Team priest Fr. Ken Myers during El Salvador’s brutal civil war. Fr. Ken and fellow Cleve-land Mission Team members Sr. Dorothy Kazel, OSU, and Jean Donovan (murdered December 2, 1980) began gathering orphans from refugee camps and bringing them back to the Mis-sion’s parish of Zaragoza.
COAR is now known as the “Children’s Village” in El Salvador with 800 day students, 100 in foster care, a medical and dental clinic, pharmacy, trade shops (such as baking and tailoring). It is administered directly by the Archbishop of San Salvador through his Vicariate of Human Development. COAR’s motto is Women and Men for God and Culture: the curriculum educates the entire person. With over 100 employees COAR strengthens the regional economy. One of the first orphans of COAR served as mayor of Zaragoza from 1998 - 2002. COAR buzzes with optimism and vitality.
However, El Salvador remains an impoverished country as are COAR’s students. To protect the most vulnerable simply requires food, shelter, and housemothers. To educate the children to modernize their economy requires updated computers and new classrooms. To get the best teachers and treat them fairly requires wages near the Salvadoran national average. Please help us respond to the needs of the most impoverished among us and help them build a bet-ter future.
NOTE: The rectory office will be closed this coming Friday, July 3rd.

¡Esperamos verlos pronto!
