SEGUNDA VIRTUD TEOLOGAL ES LA ESPERANZA

1817. La esperanza es la virtud teologal por la que aspiramos al Reino de los cielos y a la vida eterna como felicidad nuestra, poniendo nuestra confianza en las promesas de Cristo y apoyándonos no en nuestras fuerzas, sino en los auxilios de la gracia del Espíritu Santo. “Mantengamos firme la confesión de la esperanza, pues fiel es el autor de la promesa” (Hb 10,23). “El Espíritu Santo que Él derramó sobre nosotros con largueza por medio de Jesucristo nuestro Salvador para que, justificados por su gracia, fuésemos constituidos herederos, en esperanza, de vida eterna” (Tt 3, 6-7).

1818 La virtud de la esperanza corresponde al anhelo de felicidad puesto por Dios en el corazón de todo hombre; asume las esperanzas que inspiran las actividades de los hombres; las purifica para ordenarlas al Reino de los cielos; protege del desaliento; sostiene en todo desfallecimiento; dilata el corazón en la espera de la bienaventuranza eterna. El impulso de la esperanza preserva del egoísmo y conduce a la dicha de la caridad.

1819 La esperanza cristiana recoge y perfecciona la esperanza del pueblo elegido que tiene su origen y su modelo en la esperanza de Abraham en las promesas de Dios; esperanza colmada en Isaac y purificada por la prueba del sacrificio (cf Gn 17, 4-8; 22, 1-18). “Esperando contra toda esperanza, creyó y fue hecho padre de muchas naciones” (Rm 4, 18).

1820 La esperanza cristiana se manifiesta desde el comienzo de la predicación de Jesús en la proclamación de las biena-venturanzas. Las bienaventuranzas elevan nuestra esperanza hacia el cielo como hacia la nueva tierra prometida; trazan el camino hacia ella a través de las pruebas que esperan a los discípulos de Jesús. Pero por los méritos de Jesucristo y de su pasión, Dios nos guarda en “la esperanza que no falla” (Rm 5, 5). La esperanza es “el ancla del alma”, segura y firme, que penetra... “a donde entró por nosotros como precursor Jesús” (Hb 6, 19-20). Es también un arma que nos protege en el combate de la salvación: “Revistamos la coraza de la fe y de la caridad, con el yelmo de la esperanza de salvación” (1 Ts 5, 8). Nos procura el gozo en la prueba misma: “Con la alegría de la esperanza; constantes en la tribulación” (Rm 12, 12). Se expresa y se alimenta en la oración, particularmente en la del Padre Nuestro, resumen de todo lo que la esperanza nos hace desear.

1821 Podemos, por tanto, esperar la gloria del cielo prometida por Dios a los que le aman (cf Rm 8, 28-30) y hacen su voluntad (cf Mt 7, 21). En toda circunstancia, cada uno debe esperar, con la gracia de Dios, “perseverar hasta el fin” (cf Mt 10, 22; cf Concilio de Trento: DS 1541) y obtener el gozo del cielo, como eterna recompensa de Dios por las obras buenas realizadas con la gracia de Cristo. En la esperanza, la Iglesia implora que “todos los hombres [...] se sal-ven” (1Tm 2, 4). Espera estar en la gloria del cielo unida a Cristo, su esposo:

«Espera, espera, que no sabes cuándo vendrá el día ni la hora. Vela con cuidado, que todo se pasa con brevedad, aunque tu deseo hace lo cierto dudoso, y el tiempo breve largo. Mira que mientras más peleares, más mostrarás el amor que tienes a tu Dios y más te gozarás con tu Amado con gozo y deleite que no puede tener fin» (Santa Teresa de Jesús, Ex-clamaciones del alma a Dios, 15, 3) Confrontar : Catecismo de la Iglesia Catolica.

Hermanas y hermanos: Estamos en plena canícula veraniega. El mes de julio y el Tiempo Ordinario están aquí. En el evangelio de Lucas, Jesús emprende el viaje a Jerusalén para dar continuidad al ministerio que, a la postre, culminará con la crucifixión. Se encamina Cristo decididamente a la ciudad santa. Para Lucas, el ministerio de Jesús comienza en Galilea y se desarrolla durante el trayecto a Jerusalén. Al arribar a una aldea de Samaría, Jesús y los suyos son rechazados. ‘Notoria era la animosidad entre samaritanos -que adoraban a Dios en el monte Garizim,- y judíos, -que alababan a Yahvé en Jerusalén.’ Vean que Jesús ya había sido repudiado en Galilea, lo mismo ocurrirá en Sion. Santiago y Juan sintieron su orgullo herido ante tan grosero desplante y quisieron “mandar caer fuego del cielo para consumir” a los samaritanos. Si a lo largo del viaje la hospitalidad es denegada, veréis que el deseo inmediato de los discípulos será la represalia. ¡Esto no ha de ser así! Por ello, Jesús los reprendió y se fue a otro pueblo. Hay tanto que aprender del viaje de Jesús. Hay ocasiones de sanación, parábolas que enseñar, ejemplos que mostrar, milagros que realizar. Bien sabemos cómo acabará su ministerio: en la cruz, ‘con devoción tenaz, convencido de no mirar atrás.’ ¿Cuál es nuestro destino? ¿Cuáles son aquellas cosas por las que no vale la pena mirar atrás? El discípulo sabe cuán abrupta es la senda que conduce hasta Dios. Exige tanto, incluso renunciar a un hogar. El salmo 16 declara: “me harás conocer el camino de la vida, saciándome de gozo en tu presencia.” ¡El equipo de Santa Rita desea a todos un feliz verano! In Domini nostri Iesu Christi, P. Machado

Brothers and sisters:

Now we are in the midst of summer. July is around the corner and we are fully within Ordinary Time. Today, in Luke's gospel Jesus begins his journey to Jerusalem, which will end with his ministry in the holy city and the events surrounding his crucifixion. We read that Jesus is determined to go on this journey. For Luke, Jesus ministry begins in Galilee and then is one long march to Jerusalem. As they arrive to a village in Samaria Jesus and his followers are rejected. ‘There was animosity between Samaritans who worshiped on Mount Gerizim and Jews who worshiped in Jerusalem.’ But Jesus had also been rejected in Galilee and the same will occur for the last time in Jerusalem. Some of the disciples felt ill-treated and insulted, and they wanted “to call down fire from heaven to consume” the impudent Samaritans. When hospitality is not found along the journey, the immediate desire of the disciples is vengeance. That is not an appropriate response! The rebuke from Jesus makes that clear. Instead he simply moves on to another village. There is so much to learn on the journey of Jesus. There are parables to teach, examples to give, miracles to perform, moments of healing and restoration. We know the conclusion of this ministry will end with the cross, ‘the example of a single-minded devotion that will not look back.’ What is our ultimate destiny? ‘From what will we not look back to see what we left behind?’ Every disciple knows that following the path of God is a difficult task. It demands so many things, at times giving up home and livelihood.
