SAINT RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH  3

REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG

PASTOR’S CORNER

Dear Parishioners, At first I struggled with finding the link between the first reading and the gospel passage for today, until Iremembered that the Prophet Jeremiah is often offered as prefiguring Jesus’ own journey, his paschalmystery. The way they treated Jeremiah for his truth telling would be the way Jesus himself would betreated—and worse! So we hear Jesus’ words of “bringing division” (not our usual image of him), and weknow from the first reading that he is no doubt headed for big trouble. We love the image of Jesus walking through the locked doors of the upper room after he has risen, and saying to his disciples who hadabandoned him, “Peace be with you!” But stop and think what all transpired before that moment:abandonment, cruel crucifixion, and profound confusion and bewilderment on the part of those who hadplaced all their hope in the Messiah.

When I was a kid growing up, I became fascinated with what happened if you stomped on an anthill. I wasmesmerized by the image of all the ants scattering in every direction in frenetic confusion and at acomplete loss as to what just happened. (This was, obviously, before St. Francis of Assisi got to me and Ibegan to view ants as my brothers and sisters.) Soon, however, I discovered that if I returned a day later orso, the ants had completely reorganized and built the mound back up higher than it was before! I believethe parallels between ant behavior and the human experience are many. I dare say that many of you havealready compared your own experience of life or the events of human history to the destroyed anthillimage long before I related it to you today.

In some ways, I suspect that Pope Francis’ papacy is stepping on the secure anthill of our church. Like Jeremiah was attempting to shake the people up with his “Repent! Return to the Lord your God!” and like Jesus was warning his followers that “From now on a household…will be divided,” Pope Francis is

declaring a dramatic and fundamental return to the Gospel—even telling hundreds of thousands of youthin Rio and around the world to “Shake up the Church!” Already spin doctors, talking heads andecclesiastical pundits are scurrying like ants to figure out just what the new pontiff is talking about—whereis he leading us? How DO we get back to being the Church? It almost seems that The Holy Father wasgiven Jesus’ own mandate: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it already blazing!” If thisPope leads us to renewed life in Christ, what a gift!

In some ways I feel as though our little anthill here at St. Rita Parish hasalso been stirred up by our call to stewardship and our efforts towards aCapital Campaign. Before I applied to be pastor of St. Rita, one priestfriend described the parish as “sleepy.” Well, I didn’t find the parishcomatose, but I did find it in need of a wake-up call. Nobody wants to be

awakened out of a comfortable snooze, but once awake, the promise of anew day can be exhilarating and exciting. As we move on and moveforward, my prayer is that no one will want to throw me down a muddy cistern, and that all would want to embrace the call of Jesus to renewal inHis way, His truth, and His life. After all His fire is not the fire of destruction and ruin; His fire is the fire of The Holy Spirit and of transforming grace. What a gift!

 —Msgr. Richard

Y EAR  OF F AITH: A UGUST 2013 True Wealth, True Grit:

Faith’s Journey Continues

Last week we celebrated the Assumption of Mary, Blessed John Paul II’s “Star of the New Evangelization.” The Preface for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary extols Mary as the “image of the Church’s coming toperfection.” Thankfully, she is also a “sure hope and comfort toyour pilgrim people,” for August’s Gospels certainly challengepilgrims on our journey of faith. How different from Mary’s

selfless service is the self-absorption of Luke’s “rich fool.” Though his fortune is the fruit of honest hard work, the “fool”mistakenly defines himself and his life’s worth only in terms of his possessions. But Jesus’ disciples should have a different, deeper perspective on life, remembering that one day theirMaster will suddenly return. Being vigilant for that unknownmoment will make us diligent in serving Christ as he comes to usdaily in the needs of neighbor and stranger, whom we must treatreverently as fellow servants of God. Bearing witness like this is, in Jesus’ image, is playing with fire. We may have to experience theburning anguish of choosing what is right rather than what iseasy, even to the point of redefining our most personal

relationships. This being so, how pointless to wonder, “Who will be saved?” Better to ask, “Will I complete my faith journey faithfully?”

Did you know…?

Internet filter software is no substitute forparental monitoring. There is a lot of material

on the Internet that is inappropriate for children. Parentscan use filtering software to protect children from thatmaterial, but filters do not guarantee that children willnot be exposed; a filter will never be a substitute forparents’ presence. Monitor your child’s online behavior.Keep your family computer in a highly visible, commonarea, like the family room or the kitchen. Ask yourchildren to show you what sites they go to, and be openand willing to discuss the inappropriate material they might come across.
