Today’s Readings

T wentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Wisdom is imagined as a woman rich in poise and grace. She moves smoothly and confidently about her temple-like home. She doesn’t flutter about, nervous with worry. Wisdom sends her maidens to invite all to her open house. The guests do not possess any particular genius or insight. They need only be people of good will and common sense. They are summoned to leave behind foolishness and to find for themselves a place at Wisdom’s table. There they may eat and drink deeply. Today’s Gospel draws us back to the table of the Eucharist. Jesus addresses those who seek to understand his words and, sadly, those who seek to avoid them. As people born of God, we are called and equipped to seek God’s will and act on it.

LOVE THEM BOTH We must love them both—those whose opinions we share and those whose opinions we reject. For both have labored in the search for truth, and both have helped us in the finding of it. —Thomas Aquinas

God of the Universe, at the dawn of creation, your Spirit breathed on the wa-ters, making them the wellspring of all holiness. You created the oceans and rivers, and all that dwell within them, and at your word the wind and the waves were born. The seasons follow your plan, and the tides rise and fall on your command. In both calm and storm, you are with us. On the Sea of Gali-lee, even when the disciples began to fear, Jesus showed that he was Lord over the waters by rebuking the storms, so that all would know that even the wind and the waves obey him. Creator God, we ask you to calm the wind and the waves of the approaching hurricane, and spare those in its path from harm. Help those who are in its way to reach safety. Open our hearts in gen-erosity to all who need help in the coming days. In all things and in all times, help us to remember that even when life seems dark and stormy, you are in the boat with us, guiding us to safety. Amen.

Reflecting on God’s Word

As a boy, I was often sent to Kauder’s Bakery on the corner of Preston and Ensor Streets in Baltimore. There was nothing like the variety of breads today, but whether it was white, rye, or Vienna, the smell of fresh-baked bread and especially the crunch of the crust stays with me more than sixty years later. Kauder’s came to mind after reading today’s Gospel. Biblical scholars point out that the crowds would have been appalled at Jesus’ words: “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you” (John 6:53). The word used for “eat” is a very physical word, the equivalent of munching or chewing. To hear “eat my flesh” would have been repulsive. An invitation to cannibalism! The same with “drink my blood.” Jewish law was very clear that no blood should remain in any animal slaughtered for eating. Blood was the “seat of life” and life belonged only to God. But this is precisely the point. Behind this “sign” is God’s wondrous life-giving plan: to bring us into intimate communion when we partake of the very life of the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ. We are not to get drunk on the wine of this world but on the divinized drink of everlasting life. Not mundane manna but the bread that mediates an encounter with the Lord of our salvation. This is truly Wisdom’s house, where we eat both the bread of God’s word and the bread that is the Lamb of God.

“Watch carefully then how you live, not as foolish persons but as wise…” (Ephesians 5:15)

A wise person recognizes that all we have comes from God. A wise person thanks God every day for all His many blessings. A wise person realizes that God has blessed us for a reason and He wants us to be partners with Him in His work here on earth.

Mr. & Mrs. Julius Casero & Family; James & Barbara Borchert

We are delighted that you’ve joined us for worship and we hope that you’ll return to pray with us often.

As a church community, we offer lots of services to our members in addition to our weekly worship If you have moved into the area, we invite you to become a member.

Feel free to call the parish office at 352-746-9422 or email us at: [email protected].

You may also fill out a new parishioner registration form which are located on the table in the Church narthex and on the St. Scholastica website: www.stscholastica.org.

Even if you are here infrequently, we welcome you to join our Parish Family.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Baptism Registered parishioners should contact the office for instruction. This should be done at least six months before the birth of your baby.

Marriages Registered parishioners should contact the parish office at least six months in advance of making marriage arrangements.

Sick Calls Please contact the parish office if you need a priest to come to your home to anoint you, or to be anointed at a weekday Mass.

If your child or children have reached the age of 21 and are away at school or no longer residing with you, please encourage them to register at a parish where they currently reside. Establishing church membership is very important. Should they be asked to serve as a

Godparent or Confirmation Sponsor, their parish of residence will need to verify their church membership and attendance and provide them with the required documentation. Please feel free to call the parish office at 746-9422 if you have any questions.

Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all

Catholics are not registered in a parish?

Please encourage your friends and family to register!

Registering is important because:

• If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it adequately serve the needs of all - especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register?

• Registered parishioners receive helpful information about our parish. Registering is easy. Registration forms are available in the parish office, the narthex and on the parish website.

The Community of Catholic Women is a Ministry of St. Scholastica Church. As a member of the Community of Catholic Women, you receive the grace of prayers that our members say for one another. You become an integral part of our church and community. If you have just one day a year to give to our mission, you could be of great help. Just 24 hours is all it takes. You may help us with our many missions as Spirituality, Bereavement, Events, or Leadership. Please consider being a part of our great mission. Doing God’s work helps strengthen our spiritual life as well as our family life and adds great satisfaction to everything we do. The objectives of the St. Scholastica Community of Catholic Women are to praise Our Lord Jesus Christ and honor His Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary; to promote spiritual and social activities for the general welfare of St. Scholastica Parish and to sponsor fund raising activities for the church, community, national and International projects. Membership is open to all Catholic women, 18 years of age or older. For more information, call Jeannine Davis at 527-2209.

Having the Traveling Chalice in your home is a reminder to pray for our priests, deacons, seminarians and nuns. They appreciate our prayers and we are also the recipients of their prayers. We can never say too many prayers and always need the prayers of others. We encourage you to participate as a parishioner in this ministry. You receive the Chalice at the weekend mass that you attend and return it the following week. Please answer the Holy Spirit’s call. It is so rewarding. Call Rosalie Matt, 746-7143, or Theresa Stimpfl, 341-

Rosary Makers

Page 7 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

How many of us, fired up by our renewal weekend, ended it by thinking, “Now what? How can we keep this great feeling going?” In an effort to reignite some of that fire of renewal we are planning monthly sessions over the summer to enable us to reacquaint ourselves with our CRHP sisters and form new relationships with those we may not have met. It will be an opportunity to pray, meditate on scripture, and share our faith with our sisters. If you have made a CRHP weekend, whether you were able to continue with formation or not, you are cordially invited. We will meet on the first Sunday of the month from 5 to 8 P.M. in the parish hall. Please join us. Your absence will be felt. If you have questions please call Hazel Knox at 628-6979.

St. Scholastica Rosary makers began our 4th year in January. Our

meetings are held 3rd Tuesday of following months: No Meeting in August, September 15th, October 20th, November 17th and no meeting in December. We have made and shipped 17,000 rosaries for local and missionary needs.

New members are Welcome. Supplies are furnished. For more information, please call Ann Downer at 352-746-4669.

F aith Formation

Early registration savings end August 15 so don't delay. Contact Theresa Holland at [email protected]. for registration forms.

Families must be registered with the parish prior to the start of the school year to attend St Scholastica Faith Formation classes. All questions may be directed to Theresa Holland at 802-598-4222 or [email protected]

Date: Wednesday, August 26, 2015 Time: 7:00 pm Place: St. Scholastica Parish Hall Speaker: Captain Joe Eckstein The March 1993 “Storm of the Century” struck Citrus County late on Friday March 12, 1993 and continued slamming Florida and states to the north the following Saturday. Why was it called the Storm of the Century? To Citrus County residents, it was an “no-name” March hurricane creating wind gusts over 90 mph, tornadoes, and a devastatingly deadly storm surge that flooded Crystal River and Homosassa. Are you prepared? We have been long overdue for any type of damaging storm and the Knights are offering a training session featuring Captain Joe Eckstein, Director of the Emergency Operations Center for the Citrus county Sheriff’s Office. Captain Eckstein will be available to answer any of your questions. Additionally, if you are out of the area when a bad storm hits, you may need a reentry tag to get back to your neighborhood. They will be available for you to take home. Refreshments will be available.

Twentieth Sunday In Ordinary Time

God’s Word Today

At every Mass we are nourished at two tables: the table of God’s sacred word and the table of the Eucharist. Today’s readings provide a feast for our souls. Wisdom, that mysterious feminine figure, invites all to her table to eat of her food and drink of her wine. This food helps us to “advance in the way of understanding.” As wise followers of the Lord, we listen to Jesus’ words: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven.” At the table of the Eucharist we feast on this, the most sacred of all foods. We eat and drink of the very body and blood of Christ. From both tables—word and Eucharist—we are given life in abundance. Let us hunger for wisdom and for the presence of Christ as the word of God is proclaimed this day. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright © J. S. Paluch Company
