RCIA - RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

Have you or someone you know thought about becoming a Catholic?

Have you or someone you know not been baptized... but wanted to be?

Have you or someone you know been baptized...but have not received the sacraments of Confirmation or Eucharist to come into full communion with the Church?

Have you or someone you know been away from the church for a while - perhaps a long while - and need to renew your lost faith?

If the answer to any of these questions is "yes", then we invite you to find out more about how RCIA can open your mind and heart to the Church and God's grace.

You are warmly invited to an RCIA Orientation - an opportunity to meet with RCIA team members in an informal, relaxed atmosphere to introduce you to the RCIA process and how it can lead to greater spiritual fulfillment in your life. The RCIA Orientation is scheduled for Thursday, September 19 at 5:00 p.m. in the Father James Hoge Parish Center. We strongly encourage you - or them - or both of you - to attend the RCIA Orientation to see if the process is what you might be looking for. For more information, please contact the Parish Office at 352-746-9422.

ARE YOU REGISTERED?

Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all Catholics are not registered in a parish? Please encourage your friends and family to register. Registering is important because: If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it adequately serve the needs of all - especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register? Registered parishioners receive helpful information about the parish. Registration is needed to obtain Baptism/Confirmation sponsor form. Registering is easy. Registration forms are available in the parish office, the narthex and on the parish website.

Please patronize our advertisers and thank them for their generous support of the parish.

We would like to invite your child(ren) to become a part of the St. Scholastica Altar Server Ministry. It will take their time and your commitment however; it is a beautiful way for your child(ren) to express her/his active participation in both the faith and life of St. Scholastica Church.

There will be a new server training on Saturday, September 21st. at 10am. Please contact the church office at 352-746-9422 or email [email protected] for more information.

MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER

CATHOLIC CRUISE WITH FR. RICHARD STRADOMSKI

Marriage Encounter takes its name from its Spanish roots, “Encuentro” or “finding, meeting” at a very intimate level and it is common in Spanish to refer to retreats as “encuentro con Dios”. In this case, the intimate encounter is with your spouse. Take some private time with your spouse to experience an exciting and refreshing opportunity to strengthen your relationship by learning new communication skills that can deepen your relationship and help you address any problems life brings. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend in this area is Sept. 20-22 at the Hampton Inn in Oldsmar. Space IS limited, so please apply early! For more information about taking a private time away, check out flwc-wwme.org or call 813-270-7832.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

September 8, 2019 - 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33)

When we first hear this statement, it seems that Jesus is making an unrealistic demand upon us. How can we renounce all of our possessions? We need them to live. However, what we must renounce is the belief that they belong to us. Everything that we have belongs to God alone. All of our resources are entrusted to us not only for our own use, but also so that we can help others. Once we renounce the idea that we possess or are entitled to anything, it is much easier to share the many gifts that God has given us. Then we truly are His Disciples.

THE VALUE OF EDUCATION

What greater or better gift can we offer the republic than to teach and instruct our youth? —Cicero

Today’s readings continue the theme of humility explored last Sunday. All three readings today encourage us to admit that we have limits, and God has none. The poignant poetry of Wisdom resonates with all of us who have ever struggled for peace in situations we cannot control: “For the corruptible body burdens the soul and the earthen shelter weighs down the mind that has many concerns.” Saint Paul recognizes his own limitations, both physically (he is in prison) and spiritually: he cannot compel his friend to obey his wishes; he can only propose his request and respect Philemon’s free will. In the Gospel, Jesus reminds us that God alone can complete the good we wish to do in the world. While we thank God for the gifts we receive—and the families we love—we acknowledge that they are temporary, and humbly cling to God.

With any luck, summer delights will continue a while past last weekend’s Labor Day: refreshing recreation (with maybe an occasional swim) or enjoyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driving schedules needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some religious education and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend’s scriptures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For instance, Wisdom reminds us

that believers in God can never be content with “timid deliberations” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to “let the good you do be voluntary.” Jesus instructs “great crowds” traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn weekend, our scriptures describe disciples’ lifelong labors.

TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES

Page 10: St. Scholastica Catholic Church...2019/09/08  · The St. Scholastica Rosary Ministry will resume meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Loyola

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 8, 2019

Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days.— Psalm 90:14

Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians share a love for the Byzantine liturgy because it is during the Eucharist that the Church is most true to its identity, expresses its integrity, and discovers its vocation. Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians celebrate essentially the identical liturgy, with only very slight variations. It is a fairly complex ritual weaving together three separate layers of prayers: a liturgy prayed in the sanctuary by priests, often hidden by a curtain or screen; a liturgy sung by the assembly and led by a deacon in front of a screen formed of painted icons; and a third layer of private prayer by the priest, who prays in support of the deacon and the faithful. It is an eyes-wide-open experience, gorgeous in visuals, and filled with the sound of God’s people singing prayer. The energy of the worship centers on the presence of Christ, largely through an awareness of heaven touching earth when the Church gathers to celebrate. In the late twentieth century, Latin Rite Catholics were encouraged to embrace a style of worship that was “full, conscious, and active,” a value that has never been lost in the East. The liturgy has great impact in its beauty, in its poetry and contemplation, and by the actions of bowing, signing with the cross, and chanting that are required of the assembly. Contact with the Eastern Church reveals some key values that have been obscured in our own Church and are slowly being recovered. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

While the first reading from Sirach and the Gospel focus on humility, with a surprise reversal of the humble being exalted, the reading from Hebrews surprises us in a different way. The author uses apocalyptic imagery to show how much the relationship between God and humanity has changed. He starts with images of fire, storms, and trumpet blasts—images that may remind you of an erupting volcano. Even God’s words brought fear and trembling.

It may not be surprising that God is beyond human comprehension, but Hebrews says no. God doesn’t want to be so far beyond us that we only approach in fear. Using more images from the end-time, the author gives us a picture of the baptized partying with angels and all the just who have died. And of course God is the host. Let’s look at some of those images to see how our relationship with the Lord has grown.

The heavenly Jerusalem reminds us that the Church is our home—not just your parish church building but the whole community of

faith. How “at home” are you with your fellow parishioners? A church community can be a place to support those who are sick or jobless or depressed. It is also a place to be supported, to see God’s love in action. The angels in Hebrews may be a symbol of that support.

The “firstborn” and “spirits of the just” could remind us of those who went before us and now rest in the Lord. They had their own struggles in life, and now live in glory. They help us to keep our true goal in mind, eternal life.

Jesus came to show us how much God loves us and how close God can be. When he shed his blood on the cross (the final sign in our reading), he renewed the covenant with God’s people. We accept that gift not just by a verbal statement of faith, but by a life lived as Jesus showed us, in love of God and our neighbor. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
