This will be the third CSS home opener played at Malosky. The Saints are 2-3 in home openers overall. This will be the first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contest of the year as the Saints were voted to win the conference in the UMAC Coaches’ poll for the first time in program history. CSS is coming off of a 36-7 defeat to Whitworth in the 2013 season opener in Spokane, WA. The first points of the year came off a touchdown catch from Cory Gebhard in the fourth quarter. Gebhard led the receiving corps with five catches for 55 yards. Linebacker Tyler Zurn had seven tackles and two sacks on day. The Saints averaged 7.4 penalties per game last season, but had just four penalties in the opener. Iowa Wesleyan (@IWCTigers) Head Coach Tom Parkevich will return to Duluth after being one of the founding coaches of the CSS program six years ago. Parkevich was the defensive coordinator for the Saints from 2008-11. He took the IWC head coaching job in 2012. IWC made the switch from NAIA affiliation to NCAA Division III football this year and instated as an associate member of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. The Tigers fell in their first Division III game to Simpson College (Iowa), 55-21. IWC had 322 yards passing against Simpson, but was held to just 16 yards rushing. Wide receiver Ridge Hobbs had a career day catching seven passes for 159 yards and a score. Quarterback Zandro Diaz was 18-for-27 with 310 yards and two scores. Harley Malmgren led the Tiger defense with 12 tackles followed by two players with nine apiece.

The Pirates scored 21 points off of three • CSS turnovers, including 14 points in the first quarter.Cory Gebhard had five receptions for 55 • yards and CSS’s lone TD.Alec French led defense with 10 tackles.•

In its first game in NCAA Division III, the • Tigers dropped its opener against the IIAC’s Simpson College.The Storm rushed for 352 yards on the • ground as Simpson was over 600 yards of total offense.Simpson scored seven straight • touchdowns before its first punt of the game.Zandro Diaz threw for 310 yards and 2 • TDs for the Tigers.Ridge Hobbs had seven receptions for • 159 yards for IWC.

arounD the umac:Greenville picked up the biggest win of the • weekend, winning 48-41 at Millikin (Ill.). It was the first time the team won its home opener since 2009.Eureka was the only other team to pickup • a season-opening victory, defeating Knox (Ill.) 21-17.Crown opened up its new football • stadium on Saturday with a 31-14 loss to Macalester. Westminster fell to Hendrix (Ark.) 46-44. • This is Hendrix’s first year of football after a 53-year hiatus.
