Rev. Bob Brearley

On this third Sunday of

Lent, we continue our

journey with Jesus to

Jerusalem, where he will

die for sins of the world.

The scriptures, prayers,

and songs of this worship

service remind us that the

way of faith is not always

easy. It is in the suffering

times of our life that we

often draw nearest to God

and become sensitive to

the needs of others. May

we encourage one another,

and may we rely on Holy

Spirit on the difficult days.

11:00 Service Only

8:45 Service Only

Please stand if able.*

One: O Lord, our Lord, how exalted is your name in all the world!

ALL: When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,

One: What are human beings that you should be mindful of them?

Mortals that you should seek them out?

ALL: You have made them but little lower than the angels;

You adorn them with glory and honor;

One: You give them mastery over the works of your hands; You put all things under their feet.

ALL: O Lord, our Lord, how exalted is your name in all the

world!

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Silence for Personal Confession

In words of scripture

the people are called

to confess the reality

of sin in personal and

common life. Claiming

the promises of God

sealed in our baptism, we

humbly confess our sin.

The assurance of God’s

forgiving grace is declared

in the name of Jesus

Christ. We accept God’s

forgiveness, confident

that in dying to sin, God

raises us to new life.

*prAyer of confession (All)Eternal God, your kingdom has broken into our troubled world through the life, death, and resurrection of your Son. Forgive us when the weariness of life worries us into despair and when our problems seem larger than we can handle. May we remember your strength, and may we place our hope in our God as we follow the Christ and as we love others with his patient kindness. Grant us the gift of your Spirit that we may live with courage and announce with joy the wonder of your love. We bring our prayers to you.

*AffirmAtion of fAith (All)

The reconciling work of Jesus was the supreme crisis in the life of humankind. His cross and resurrection become personal crisis and present hope for us when the gospel is proclaimed and believed. In this experience, the Spirit brings God’s forgiveness to all people, moves them to respond in faith, repentance, and obedience, and initiates the new life in Christ. The new life does not release us from conflict with unbelief, pride, lust, or fear. We still have to struggle with disheartening difficulties and problems. Nevertheless, as we mature in love and faithfulness in our life with Christ, we live in freedom and good cheer, bearing witness on good days and evil days, confident that the new life is pleasing to God and helpful to others.
