Men and Women of Holiness. Just as we asked the help of the saints when we prayed for the living, so now we ask their inter-cession again, after interceding for the dead. We confess to God that we are sinful and imperfect servants, yet for that very reason, we “hope in his abundant mercies,” and ask to share in the fellow-ship of the saints in heaven. The prayer names eight men martyrs, John the Baptist, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexan-der, Marcellinus and Peter, then names seven virgin martyrs, “Felicity and Perpetua, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, and Anasta-sia.” By their help, and by the mercy and grace of Christ who grants us all pardon, we ask to be admitted into their heavenly company, and thus we ask one last time to be made to share in the Heavenly Liturgy. It is Christ who makes all good things, sancti-fying, filling them with life, blessing them, and bestowing them upon us; he is the Lord of Abounding Life. Then the great “mini-hymn” to the Trinity is sung by the priest: “Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for ever and ever.” The people respond and ratify this little hymn and the whole prayer of Consecration by singing, “AMEN!” Next week: The Lord’s Own Prayer.

30 October ~ Blessed Peter O’Higgins: An Irishman born in 1602, when it was crime to be a Catholic in much of the British Isles, Fr. Peter O’Higgins was a Dominican friar and truly a man of God, wearing himself out in his care for plague victims, and even stopping the attempted execution of an Anglican minister by Catholics. When his town was taken by the English forces, he willingly surrendered himself since he was innocent of all crimes. He was then found guilty of not accepting King Charles I as the supreme head of the Church in Ireland and sentenced to death. Blessed Terence O'Brien, Provincial of the Irish Dominican Prov-ince at the time, recounted his martyrdom to the General Chapter in 1644. Peter had been offered the chance to keep his life if he simply renounced his Catholic faith. He asked that the terms be written down and brought to him at the gallows where he was to be hanged. On the day of his martyrdom, the conditions for his life were presented to him, and he stated: “So here are the condi-tions on which I am granted my life. They want me to deny my religion. I spurn their offer. I die a Catholic and a Dominican priest. I forgive from my heart all who have conspired to bring about my death.” The year was 1642. He was beatified with 16 other Irish martyrs by Saint John Paul II in 1992. Bl. Peter O’Higgins, pray for us!

HOLY ROSARY SODALITY INTENTION Persecuted Christians throughout the world

PRAYER OF POPE BENEDICT XVI FOR PRIESTS Lord Jesus Christ, eternal High Priest, you offered yourself to the Father on the altar of the Cross and through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit gave your priestly people a share in your redeeming sacri-fice. Hear our prayer for the sanctification of our priests. Grant that all who are ordained to the ministerial priesthood may be ever more conformed to you, the divine Master. May they preach the Gospel with pure heart and clear conscience. Let them be shepherds accord-ing to your own Heart, single-minded in service to you and to the Church and shining examples of a holy, simple and joyful life. Through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, your Mother and ours, draw all priests and the flocks entrusted to their care to the full-ness of eternal life where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
