STEWARDSHIP: SHARING TIME, TALENT, TREASURE, and PRAYER

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil.” - 2 Corinthians 5:10

We are all accountable for all of the gifts God has given us – our time, our talent and our treasure;

everything we have and everything we are. Each of us is accountable not only for our own life but for the lives of others as well. One day God will ask each of us what did we do with the gifts

we were given. How will you respond?

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

Following the example of our patron St. Stephen, we are called to be witnesses of God’s love and to be a faith-filled, reconciling parish.

IGNATIAN VOLUNTEER CORPS

The Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) is an exciting program that invites faith-motivated persons to serve with the poor and marginalized. IVC Service Corps Members are age 50 and better, retired or semi-retired. SCMs reflect and pray in the Ignatian tradition on their service, meet monthly with other IVC SCMs and with a spiritual reflector. Visit www.ivcusa.org for more information. Search for St. Louis under the Locations tab. If service, prayer, and reflection interest you, contact Sr. Amy Diesen, OSF for more information at 314-758-7147 or [email protected].

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR

Archbishop Rozanski has announced that the dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation which was put in place in response to COVID will be lifted as of July 1. Please note that those who are sick, homebound, immunocompromised, or gravely concerned for their health retain the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass, which has always been the case in normal times. Decisions specific safety measures are left to the discretion of individual pastors. In light of this news from the Archbishop as well as new directives from the Health Department, I want to outline our safety measures, some of which are changed, some of which will remain in place for the time being. • Mass-goers are no longer asked to register ahead of

time or to sign in. • You may use any of the regular church entrances. • Seats are no longer assigned. As long as you are

keeping a safe and respectful distance from those outside of your group, you may sit anywhere in church except for the west transept.

• To aid in social distancing and the distribution of communion, we will continue to keep every other pew unoccupied.

• Those who are fully vaccinated against COVID no longer need to wear a mask. Those who are not vaccinated must still wear a mask while in church.

• Hymnals are available in the back of church for those who have not already borrowed one. After Mass, you are welcome to take a hymnal home and bring it back with you the next time you come. Otherwise, please return it to the back of church.

• Altar servers, all of whom are fully vaccinated, will be present at most weekend Masses.

• Our collection basket will remain in the back of church for the time being.

• We will continue to forgo the presentation of gifts.

• To disperse safely at the end of Mass, we will continue to dismiss by row, starting from the back.

• Our choir will remain on hiatus through the summer and will evaluate at that time whether and how to resume.

• Windows will be closed while the air-conditioning is on. The front door of church may remain open.

Update on the Chapel The Chapel of Sts. Mary & Joseph is now on the market. We are tentatively planning for some kind of open house this fall. The chapel will not change hands before the two weddings already scheduled for later this year. The ABC Raffle, the proceeds of which support the care of SSMJ, will continue its drawings and payouts through the end of this year. I thank Michelle Rusch for her coordination of the raffle. I am sensitive to the feelings that surround the loss of such an historic property. So many of the important moments of our lives are bound up in church and school buildings, and their loss is personal. We at St. Stephen are honored to have been caretakers of this Carondelet landmark. Peace,

Liturgical Gestures: Sitting There is no particular religious significance to the position of sitting. It is a posture of receptive listening and resting. It became popular for the listening parts of the Mass only after pews were introduced into churches in the 16th century. Pews became popular first in reform churches, where services concentrated on listening to Scripture and preaching.

The middle child of postures, perhaps. Not the complete abandon of lying down, Not the height of power, standing in full stature, but somewhere in the middle between action and rest. We sit still, alert yet calm, serene but watchful. We sit still, willing to listen ready to be beckoned, waiting, receptive, open. In this posture, the Word of the Lord may begin to be heard.

If you have a question, contact Mary at 314-481-1133 or [email protected].

SOUL: BLESS THE 12 NOTES

This year’s Academy Award for Original Music Score was won by composer Jon Batiste for his work on the Pixar film Soul, the animated tale of a jazz pianist who has a near-death experience and gets stuck in the afterlife, causing him to rethink the choices he made in the existence he mostly took for granted. Batiste, who is the band leader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, is the third Black musician to win the Oscar for original score, after Prince in 1985 for Purple Rain and Herbie Hancock for Round Midnight in 1987. In accepting the Oscar, Batiste celebrated the moment by giving thanks for the “12 notes”: “You know what’s deep is that God gave us 12 notes. It’s the same 12 notes that Duke Ellington had, that Bach had, Nina Simone … Every gift is special. Every contribution with music that comes from the divine into the instruments into the film, into the minds, hearts and souls of every person who hears it, the stories that happen when you listen to it and watch it and the stories you share, the moments you make, the memories you create — man, it’s just so incredibly special ... I’m thankful to God for those 12 notes.” Every song ever written and ever will be written is composed from the same 12 notes, whether it’s “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” or Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. God gives us all “12 notes” to create the soundtrack of our lives. That “scale” includes compassion, mercy, forgiveness, justice, empathy, and peace; everyone can make music with those “notes” — saint and sinner, scientist and laborer, venerable grandparent and curious child, corporate executive and forgotten homeless. To realize the “music” of God demands the same vision to hope, the love to create for the good of others and the commitment to grow and nurture as that of the farmer planting seed in today’s Gospel. Jesus challenges us to embrace the faith of the Gospel sower and the hope of the mustard seed: to be willing to plant seeds of kindness and joy wherever and whenever we can in the certain knowledge that it will, in some way, result in a harvest of God’s life and love; to play the notes we are able to string together that creates the music of God’s Spirit playing through our lives.
