ST. TERESA OF AVILA CATHOLIC CHURCH AKRON, NEW YORK

We Catholics firmly profess and believe that the Holy Eucharist is the true Body and Blood of Christ,

made present under sacramental signs of bread and wine. “It has always been the conviction of the Church of God . . .that by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change in the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of His blood. This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation (CCC)*. How can such a change take place? We don’t see it. It defies logic. The bread and wine still look like bread and wine. They taste like bread and wine; they feel and smell like bread and wine. How can they be the Body and Blood of Christ? We believe that the bread and wine offered at Mass become Christ’s Body and Blood because we trust in the words of the Lord, who refers to Himself as “the bread of life.” When Jesus refers to Himself as the “living bread, which came down from heaven” (John 6:51), His hearers take Him literally. They understand Jesus to mean that His disciples must literally eat His body and drank His blood. They are right to do so. The context of the Lord’s words makes it quite clear that Jesus is not speaking symbolically. On numerous occasions in the Gospel, Jesus speaks in parables, or uses images that His disciples do not always understand. When His disciples are confused, Jesus always explains the meaning of His words. If Jesus had been speaking in a symbolic way, He would have corrected their misunderstanding. No rectification was made. One can only conclude that Jesus was speaking literally. In order to have eternal life, the disciples of Christ must “eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in Him’ (John 6:54-55). Thankfully, Jesus gives us His Body and Blood under the outward appearance of bread and wine so that we might easily receive Him. How many of us would be eager to receive Holy Communion if we had to do so under the appearance, not of bread and wine, but of human flesh and blood? The fact that the Lord allows the outward appearance (the accidents) of bread and wine to remain, even though the inner reality (the essence or substance) of the bread and wine become the Lord’s Body and Blood, is a sign of God’s mercy. He wants us to receive Him, and He makes it easy for us to do so. “The Mass is at the same time, and inseparable, the sacrificial memorial in which the sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated and the sacred banquet of communion with the Lord’s body and blood. But the celebration of the Eucharistic sacrifice is wholly directed toward the intimate union of the faithful with Christ through Communion. To receive Communion is to receive Christ Himself who has offered Himself for us” (CCC)*. Father Stephen Reynolds *Catechism of the Catholic Church

Prayer for Vocations

God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as sisters, brothers, and religious priests. Renew their knowledge and love of you, and send your Holy Spirit to help them respond generously and courageously to your will. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Receiving the Eucharist is a real sign of unity in our Church. God nourishes us with the “Bread from Heaven” if we have ordained priests to celebrate the Liturgy. If you feel the inclination towards ordination to the priesthood, call Father Walter Szczesny at 716-847-5535.

Thanks to the k i n d n e s s a n d generosity of so many

in our parish, we were able to send the Sisters of St. Francis in Williamsville a total donation of $1320.00 for their mission in Timau, Kenya. You can be assured that Sister Joanne Gangloff and Sister Bea Leising will put every penny of this money toward good use. The Women’s Guild appreciates all your help with this project.

MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST * JUNE 7, 2015

Our Special Prayer Intention this Week: That in this year dedicated to consecrated life our parish and diocese will witness a surge of men and women answering the call to serve Christ and His Church; we pray to the Lord…

Please pray for the sick of the parish and their family members particularly; David Hahn, Joan Piechocki, Paul Coleman, Shirley Lantz, Fred Wysocki, William Provost, and

for the happy repose of the soul of Stanley Jankowski, Rose Robinson and Msgr. Herbert Engelhardt. Please also continue to pray for the troops who are serving in the military in Afghanistan, Iraq and throughout the world.

Religious Education: Today at Mass, let us draw our children’s attention to two “vessels” used at Mass: the ciborium which is carried up at the Offertory and the chalice. The chalice is define by The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth as “the cup used during Mass that holds the wine before the Consecration and the Blood of Christ after the Consecration. It represents the cup used at the Last Supper and is a symbol of Jesus’ sacrifice and eternal life.

Mark your calendars for Vacation Bible School at St. Teresa’s Church! The theme this year is Mt. Everest. This fun-filled week of Bible stories, games,

crafts and snacks will run from July 13-17 from 6-8 pm in the evening. Those who are entering grades K-5 in the fall are invited to attend—and bring a friend too! A meeting for all those interested in volunteering to assist at the Vacation Bible School will take place on Sunday, June 14th after the 10:15 am Mass in the Parish Hall. All volunteers over the age of 18 must be certified with the Protecting God’s Children training. This is a great way to earn volunteer hours for Confirmation. For more information, please call Karen Stachowiak at 442-6084.

A doctor had a problem with a leak in his bathroom plumbing that became bigger and bigger. Even though it was 2 a.m., the doctor decided to phone his plumber. “For Pete’s sake, Doc,” he wailed,

“this is some time to wake a guy.” “Well,” the doctor answered testily, “you’ve never hesitated to call me in the middle of the night with a medical problem. Now it just happens I’ve got a plumbing emergency.” There was a moment’s silence. Then the plumber spoke up, “Right you are, Doc,” he agreed. “Tell me what’s wrong.” The doctor explained about the leak in the bathroom. “Tell you what to do,” the plumber offered. “Take two aspirins every four hours and drop them down the pipe. If the leak hasn’t cleared up by morning, phone me at the office.”
