Chair’s Report, Pastoral Council

The Pastoral Council has now been in existence for three years and has hopefully become a recognisable body within the Parish. There are many areas of parish life in which lay people can become involved and indeed, may have to be more involved in, when the diocesan wide consultation “Forward Together in Hope” is completed.

The Pastoral Council has arranged, organised, developed and supported a range of liturgies and activities – some new, some revived and some on their way to becoming permanent fixtures. This year these included: Parish meal out at La Vita; International Mass; Green sheet information; Singing Workshop; Evening Prayer group; Clothes bank contributions; Rep on the Council of laity; Remembrance Sunday service; Harvest Festival Mass; Childrens liturgy; Family Advent Service…. and many more.

In all of these activities, the focus is on the four areas identified in the original parish consultation:

To become a more welcoming and friendly parish

To increase the focus on spiritual life

To use the gifts of the whole community

To involve the youth of the parish

We will soon have more information about our parish from a wide range of parishioners in the questionnaire responses to “Forward Together in Hope”. As well as summarising the responses for the diocese, we are also going to use those responses to inform how the parish grows and develops in the future.

There are many volunteers within our parish, helping us to flourish and grow. Many of the groups within the parish have contributed to this annual report and if there are any activities you would like to become involved with, please fill in a yellow form, or see one of our Welcomers. Thank you to everyone who has helped in any way this year and to Fr. Michael and Fr. Paddy who have continued to support and develop the Pastoral Council this year. Sarah Bell

Report from the Parish Priest

A great tribute to yourselves and our group of Welcomers is that many visitors to St Teresas comment on how warm and friendly our parish is, and over coffee and cake at the back of church, the sense of being a family is growing well. That sense of family is being developed at the baptism courses that we run three or four times a year, where as well as explaining what baptism means, young parents get a sense of real community – a far cry from just getting the child “done”. Our young parishioners and parents at the confirmation course enjoyed exploring the implications of that sacrament. Bishop Seamus celebrated their confirmation with them, in a lovely service full of music and prayer, affirming them in their gifts and encouraging them to live in Gods spirit. The First Communion day was a marvellous celebration and a great tribute to the hard work of the catechists (teachers and parishioners) with the children over the previous months. Our Parish school continues to be outstanding in every way, a most marvellous example of what a true Eucharistic community should be. Our liturgies are enhanced by the children‟s artwork, liturgical dance, singing and happy faces. They were terrific ambassadors for us at the Heaton Festival; the Year 6 gathering at the Cathedral and the Good Friday open air service at Byker. We are blessed with our two organists and music group of instrumentalists and singers, and with those who lead the children‟s liturgy (there is a real need for more volunteers!) The Faith Course was a joy for me to lead last year. So much happened in exploring God, the church, life, self and sacraments. Another course is starting soon – do come! The Heaton Festival was a highlight of the wonderful ecumenical relationships we have with the other churches, with many parishioners being involved in events leading up to the day and on the day itself. Thousands experienced the Christian churches reaching out lovingly to them. Incidentally, we ministers look forward to meeting and sharing with each other every month. The ecumenical service held at St Teresa‟s to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Heaton Mining disaster was unforgettable.

Each week some have grown in faith through the Monday night DVDs and the Monday afternoon scripture sharing. Sister Margaret Wilson‟s night on Prayer was great – she‟ll be back! I‟d like to encourage everyone to deepen awareness of faith, hope and love and become more active in building up family life in our parish and reach out to others. Why not sign up for our day on Pope Francis‟ evangelical “Laudato Si”, on Saturday 24th October, in our newly refurbished hall, or look at the days/courses at Minsteracres and elsewhere. A very big thanks to all who are doing so much to help us – the Parish Pastoral Council, Finance Council, maintenance (especially Mark and Paul who have saved us thousands), office staff, Welcomers and all who help in so many ways. Thank you everyone for your goodness, for your service to us all and for building the living body of Christ for the sake of the world. Could I leave you with the beautiful prayer given to us on Home Mission Sunday, leading to the year of Mercy beginning on 8th December. Can we live it the coming year: Loving Father, You so loved the world that you sent us your only Son, that we might believe in

him and have eternal life. May we encounter Jesus Christ anew this day and

live the good news with joy. Through the power of your Hoy Spirit, help us to

“go out to the whole world and proclaim” our faith with confidence. Give us the

courage to witness to the Joy of the Gospel by our words and actions. Help

our parish to become more welcoming and missionary, so that you may be

known and loved by all people. We make this prayer through Our Lord Jesus

Christ Your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God

for ever and ever, Amen. Our Lady, Star of the New Evangelisation, Pray for

us. Blessed John Henry Newman, Pray for us. St Therese of Lisieux, pray for

Welcomers

The Welcomers‟ Group currently consists of 11 members. Welcomers are currently rotated on a bi-monthly basis, so each welcomer only has a welcoming duty once every 2 months. The group has welcomed 3 new members over last year.

In addition to the Welcomers, the group also organises the baking and arranging for the porch coffee mornings, which are held roughly once a fortnight. There are currently 13 bakers and 12 arrangers on the rota. Again, bakers/arrangers are scheduled to help roughly once every 2 months. Donations from the coffee morning are sent each month to a charitable cause, usually alternating between a national/international and a local charity.

The Welcomers have also been involved in organising events such as Welcome Back Sunday in June 2015. Stickers decorated by the school children from St Teresa‟s Primary we handed out to the congregation to write their names on.

Welcomers and bakers/arrangers also assisted with the hospitality after the Confirmation service at St Teresa‟s in June 2015. Other recently organised events include an Autumn walk in October 2015, which came through ideas of how to involve older parishioners. The group is also looking at ways of developing the Home Visiting service, in conjunction with or alongside the SVP.

Spirituality.

The spiritual life of the Church continues to grow through regular

spiritual activities:

the celebration of the Eucharist at weekly and daily mass; the Good

News and Exploring the Word of God groups. In addition, Fr. Michael

has led a Journey In Faith group. We have also had Exposition of the

Blessed Sacrament and Stations of the Cross. Some of our young

people took the next step in their spiritual lives by preparing for

Confirmation and were confirmed in June. We also had Sr. Margaret

Wilson lead us in a spiritual exercise on prayer, possibly with a view to

forming a prayer/spiritual group in the autumn. The diocese holds

conferences and days of renewal and reflection which parishioners

attend..

Communications

Good communication within the parish is important help us to be involved in parish life and look beyond ourselves to the wider church and world. We have continued to build on the good work already undertaken This year we have added to our noticeboards;

We also have acquired a high power projector which has made it much

easier to use DVDs for the whole congregation to see ( Forward in

Hope launch DVD) Many thanks once more to Paul Grant for his

technical wizardry.

The Parish website continues reflect the life of the parish and is a

useful resource for providing information including mass times, weekly

newsletter, activities in the church hall as well as links to events in the

diocese. It is well used and is often the first contact people outside the

parish have with St. Teresa‟s

The parish office continues to be a visible sign of the laity being clearly

involved in the day to day running of the parish. Many thanks to the

volunteers who this year took on a major role in the preparation for the

Heaton Festival (sorting 20,000 flyers into batches for delivery to

streets around Heaton). We have also continued to build our parish

database to help us contact volunteers and keep in touch with new

members of the parish (thanks to Beverley and Francesca )

The Forward Together in Hope program has involved a big commitment

to communication with all members of the parish. Data on the current

state of the parish has been collated via the diocese parish groups and

pastoral council and displayed on boards in the porch and on the

website. This has hopefully allowed parishioners to give considered

responses to the reflective questions which have been given out in

mass. The response so far has been very encouraging with …?….

responses to the first sets of questions.

Parish Office

The office has been up and running for two years, dealing with

enquiries over the phone, welcoming visitors to the house and helping

with the administration of the hall, church and preparation for special

events. The office opening hours are from 10.30am - 12md Monday to

Friday. There are a regular set of ladies, Bernadine, Veronica, Sarah,

Margaret and Anne, who have proved to be very reliable and turn up

each week to do their stint without fail. Anyone who could spare a few

hours once a week please contact Anne Grant on 2700651

Altar Servers

Currently we have 4 regular altar servers and 2 or 3 occasional servers.

We have a rota system and servers are divided into two sets and serve

every other week.

Recruitment for new altar servers is ongoing in St. Teresa's school.

Training, with parental consent, takes place in church on Friday

afternoons. After several weeks the trainees are allowed to wear an alb

and be in the sanctuary as an observer. There are 4 servers currently

training. Any child who does not attend St. Teresa's school and would

like to train to become a server please contact Anne Grant

Children’s Liturgy. We currently have 4 volunteers for this activity and are trying to run as regularly as possible. We are trialling Children‟s Liturgy back in the presbytery (fewer distractions), but this does require 2 DBS cleared leaders each time to comply with diocesan policy. As this is such an important part of our young peoples‟ experience of church, it would be lovely if more volunteers were able to come forward and help out. It gives a great deal of joy to the rest of the parish to see the enthusiasm and involvement of our younger parishioners. Sarah Bell Music Group The music group supports the parish liturgy throughout the year. We have continued to provide music on a fortnightly basis especially supporting all the masses for first communion preparation. We are always looking for new talent and have been blessed with two new musicians this year Michaela on harp and Claire on clarinet Highlights this year have been:

in the centenary year of the first world war a poignant Remembrance Sunday Last Post and Silent Night sung in German in our Advent and Christmas services Holy week services which were planned well in advance; for Good Friday and the Easter Vigil we came together with Maggie & Rita on the organ to provide a wider variety of music and Michaela provided lovely reflective music on the harp for quiet times of prayer Our 2nd International mass, no pink vestments this time but great sounds from Kelechi‟s Nigerian drum and enthusiastic singing from the congregation. The first holy communion mass and Mrs Docx retirement mass were celebrations of great joy and the confirmation mass was wonderfully supported by the choir from St. Mary‟s school.

Ecumenism

St. Teresa‟s is an important part of the family of churches in Heaton. Our relationship with other churches has become very close in recent years and continues to develop. Highlights of this year have been: The Christmas Presents event which involved lots of carols ,a big park tidy, a special community café at Heaton Baptist as well as our annual collection of Christmas gifts for the People‟s Kitchen. People‟s generosity again provided over 200 gifts. In Christian Unity week St. Gabriel‟s hosted a very well supported Unity Service on the theme of peace and reconciliation The series of Lent lunches continues to bring people of all churches together and provides funds for the work of Christian Aid. The Good Friday and Easter Dawn services were again a successful as a witness to the community of the importance of Easter. Though the weather was miserable the children from St. Teresa‟s and musicians from Heaton Baptist ably supported the gathered worshippers. St. Teresa‟s played host to a very special ecumenical service in May commemorating the Heaton Main pit disaster. This was a very moving

service with special music performed by Heaton Voices and the Backworth Colliery Band. St. Teresa‟s children also performed a beautiful dance for the occasion. We have continued to support Newcastle East food bank organised by

Elim Pentecostal church and have also joined the Newcastle peace

chain praying for peace in conjunction with churches, temple, mosques

and synagogues across the city The main event of the year has been

the stunningly successful Heaton Festival in Heaton Park, attended by

over 12,000 people. The event included people from local schools,

businesses, bands, art groups, charities coming together to celebrate

all that‟s good about Heaton. It is a powerful witness to our local

community of how we can work together as people of faith to create

something very special. Forty parishioners from St. Teresa‟s were

involved in the preparation and running of the festival not including the

numerous kind souls who delivered festival flyers to their local streets.

By working together on such a large project we continue to make stronger bonds of friendship between all the churches in Heaton.

Report on Youth Activities

FIRST HOLY COMMUNIONS This year 33 children made their First Holy Communion in May. They were prepared for the sacrament by a team of catechists, under the leadership of their class teachers Katherine McKenzie and Tracy Allen-Baker with the invaluable support of Fr Michael and Janet Purdy who worked closely with parents. The First Holy Communion celebration took place on May 10th and was a memorable event, enabling the whole parish to come together and join in this special celebration. This year, once again, funds raised at the coffee mornings held after First Holy Communion masses were distributed to charities chosen by the

children. A total of £360 was raised this year for which we congratulate the children and their families. CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME This year Fr. Michael led 10 candidates from St Teresa‟s with 23 candidates from St Aidan‟s and St Mary‟s, Forest Hall, in joint sessions through confirmation preparation. The course followed guidelines laid out in the new diocesan Confirmation programme which incorporated elements from the successful confirmation course developed in our parish in 2012. The course consisted of ten sessions during which Father Michael asked the group how they saw the Church and God, and invited them to consider their vision for the Church and the world; but his main focus was to encourage the young people to recognise their gifts and discover how they could use them for the benefit of themselves and others. The course also included a visit to YMT and trip to Holy Island. The confirmation service was held at St. Teresa‟s on Wednesday 24th June and was well attended by candidates, families and parishioners. The course was a great success with individual members growing in confidence throughout, working together and ending up as a team. Everyone learned to recognise their gifts and talents and appreciate how they could use them for the benefit of others. Plans have been made for group members to meet together again for events such as the Source, the praise and worship event at St Mary‟s cathedral. A full set of notes from the confirmation course are available on request from Fr Michael or Pat Henzell. FAIRTRADE For several years, the Fairtrade stall has been run in the Church porch by young parishioners on the first weekend of each month after both masses. This year, we raised £250 during Fairtrade fortnight through a raffle, coffee morning and quiz. The money was donated to Fairtrade charities to help producers in developing countries

YOUTH SUNDAY- 23rd NOVEMBER 2014 The Parish was represented at the preparation day for Youth Sunday on September 28th. The theme this year was „Outrageous Hope‟ following on from the message from Pope Francis for Youth Day 2013 „Go, Do not be afraid, Serve‟. This year young people of the parish took a lead role in the Youth Sunday mass, followed by a coffee morning, at which they raised money to buy CAFOD gifts for life. Preparation for Youth Sunday 2015 will take place on Sunday 11th October at St Robert‟s School in Washington using the theme „Love undeserved‟ and again parishioners are welcome to attend. ADVENT PLAY Once again this year the young people of the parish entertained us with an advent play written by one of our parishioners. Tots to teens were involved in the production bringing together the whole of our young community. Tea and cakes were served after the event and money raised was donated to the CAFOD Gifts for Life fund. Look out for this event in December as it is well worth attending. CAFOD GIFTS FOR LIFE This is a youth inspired venture started by two of our young confirmation parishioners and their families two years ago. This was an original idea from the young people of our Parish. They raise funds through cake stalls and coffee mornings following key parish events and use the money to buy CAFOD gifts for life on behalf of the parish. Such initiative in young people is to be applauded and as a parish we thank them.

LOURDES YOUTH

This year young members of our parish travelled to Lourdes with the youth section of the Hexham and Newcastle Diocesan Pilgrimage to help sick and disabled pilgrims. They included sixth form students who previously attended St Teresa‟s school, university students and young workers including one of the young teachers from our school. As a

tribute to these young people the parish raised funds for the Lourdes Hospitalité through the Kellet Cup Race Night which took place on November 8th, 2014. The evening was a great success bringing together St Teresa‟s parishioners, Lourdes Youth and supporters from throughout the Diocese. £1800 was raised to support disabled and elderly pilgrims enjoy their trip to Lourdes. If any young people in the parish, aged 16-25, feel they would like to join the Lourdes Youth on next year‟s pilgrimage, please contact us for further details.

CITY YOUTH GROUP

The City Youth Group, a group of adults with a special interest in Youth Ministry, was formed as a result of the school mission and meetings are regularly attended by Fr Michael and other parish members. The group now produces regular newsletters reporting on current activities in our 3 catholic high schools. This distributed in parishes throughout the city. Our parish intends to be the first to contribute parish news to the bulletin, reporting on our confirmation group and CAFOD Gifts for Life. Anyone wishing to become involved in the group would be most welcomed.

We are very fortunate to have so many active young people associated

with our parish, giving their time and talents to helping others. Although

they may not always fill our church benches, we are so lucky that they

fill our lives with their enthusiasm and goodness. We wish them every

success in their futures and we pray for them as they continue on their

faith journey.

St Teresa’s School

This year links between the school and parish are flourishing. Members of the parish are warmly welcomed at our half termly masses in school and our end of half term masses in the church. Our Mini Vinnie group worked with the Parish SVP, collecting food for Christmas hampers in the parish and inviting parishioners to entertainment and afternoon tea in school. Our Christingle service in the church is always very well attended and a joyous occasion. During Lent, the school has Stations of the Cross on Friday lunchtime in church – parishioners are always very welcome to join us. Thank you to all in the Parish who prayed for the children during their First Communion preparation and to the catechists from the parish who worked with the children during the year. Finally, our recent Diocesan RE inspection, judged the school to be outstanding. This is due in part to the strong links between parish and school, as well as the hard work of the staff and children.

The main team of Church cleaners meets at 10.30am on the last Friday of each month.

A second smaller group of cleaners meets on Friday evenings when necessary to support and complement the main team.

Special arrangements are in place before Christmas and Easter when both groups combine to carry out the necessary cleaning. These dates will be advertised in the Parish Bulletin and everyone is welcome to participate, even if you are not available for the rest of the year.

New volunteers are always welcome especially at Easter and Christmas.

We would like to extend a special thanks to those loyal parishioners who have been dedicated to church cleaning for over 30 years. Their commitment to their duties is gratefully acknowledged by the whole parish.

Church Flower Arrangers Report

Flowers are usually replaced every two to three weeks during the year and freshened up as appropriate.

Further use of plants has been introduced this year. This is especially practical in hot weather.

When appropriate, themes are incorporated into the floral displays e.g. red for Pentecost, roses for St Teresa‟s feast, and poppies for Remembrance Sunday. This year we have introduced displays of flowers and produce for harvest festival.

We would like to thank those parishioners who regularly donate money towards Church flowers and would gratefully welcome any donations, particularly around Easter or Christmas.

We would warmly welcome any new volunteers to join a flower arranging rota. Even if you have no previous experience but feel you have the time and would like to help, please get in touch.

Toddler Group

This group has run successfully for many years, on a Tuesday morning 9-11, term time only. 2 parish volunteers run the group and we welcome parishioners and non-parishioners. There are usually between 15 -20 children aged from a few months to pre-school age attending every week. As a result of the parish financial position, we put our costs up to £1.00 per family and this has meant that we can regularly give the church donations towards the cost of using the hall, while hopefully not excluding anyone from attending. We also advertise and encourage people to attend any parish events.

Tuesday Ladies

Our group meets weekly in the presbytery, on a Tuesday between 2 -

3.30. There are currently about 10 regular members and we enjoy a

range of social events and fundraise for the parish. Our main

fundraisers are the jumble sales held in the church hall, usually in

February, May and October and an annual raffle. New members are

very welcome to join us – please contact Ann Knowles.

Safeguarding

We have 51 parishioners working as volunteers in roles requiring clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS formerly CRB). These roles include Catechists, Children‟s Liturgy Group Workers, Eucharistic Ministers, Church Welcomers, Parish Administrator, Leader of Music group/choir, Church Organist, Home Visitors, and Helpers at Lourdes Pilgrimage. This year I have processed 4 DBS applications for new volunteers who now have DBS clearance. Improvements continue to be made to streamline the process including on line applications which will be introduced soon. I work closely with the staff at the Diocese Safeguarding office. They provide me with advice, help and answers to questions I raise on a regular basis. This office also provides annual training. Fr. Michael and I attended refresher training event in November 2014. I would like to thank all of our volunteers who have worked really hard in getting their applications processed.

The Red Box is a money box which parishioners can use to put their

small change in on a regular basis. APF leaflets with information on

how the money is used and a Christmas Calendar are distributed to

Red Box Holders twice a year by Collectors – Jean Potts, Sarah Bell,

Madeleine King

APF-Mill Hill needs more Red Box Holders as the numbers and

collection totals are declining but the demands for funding are always

rising with the poverty, wars, earthquakes disasters in different parts of

the world.

So please contact one of the Collectors for a Red Box and start filling

it with money.

Society of St Vincent De Paul, St Teresa’s Conference

During the past year the Parish St Vincent de Paul Society made 464

visits to parishioners in their own homes, in care/nursing home and

occasionally in hospital. These visits were made mainly to our senior

citizens who are ill or suffering disabilities which make the majority

virtually housebound. Most receive Holy Communion regularly and are

given the weekly newsletter, the Northern Cross and various gifts from

church. At Christmas, we provide a present of chocolates, biscuits etc,

which is made possible thanks to the generosity of parishioners whose

contributions via the boxes held after the weekend masses. This

amounted to £1,480 last year.

Apart from monies spent within the parish, we support national and

diocesan projects such as the Deaf Club, Holy Island Camp and

Blackfriars centre. The SVP operates in over 150 countries and we are

twinned with an SVP conference in Kerala, India. The amount we sent

last year was only £180, yet that provided student scholarships,

clothing, food and various other items. We recently have been twinned

with an SVP conference in South Sudan.

Parish Social Calendar

Social events are an excellent way of building our parish community

and also establishing links with other groups such as our school,

neighbouring parishes and other local community organisations. They

are also a good way of fundraising for our parish and other charities

and worthy causes both locally, nationally and further afield. Several

social activities take place within our parish every year and the

In addition to the events listed, there are other groups within our parish

offering opportunities for parishioners to meet socially: the Tuesday

Ladies Group meets every week and raises funds for charities; Heaton

Churches Together services held at St Teresa‟s are followed by a

social gathering for refreshments; parish socials are held in the hall

after services such as confirmations.

A suggestion has been made that in future we co-ordinate parish social

activities to give as many people as possible the opportunity to

participate fully in the life of the parish. Should anyone have any ideas

for future social events or fundraising please let us know and we will

give you every support.

Finance Committee

The Finance Committee (which also deals with general administration)

this year consisted of John Byrne, Brian Dale (Treasurer), Anne Grant

(Parish Secretary), Paul Grant (Clerk of Works), Mark Hayes (Acting

Chair) and John Taylor. We would like to appoint two people to co-

ordinate fund-raising and grant-making activities but are still looking.

The Committee met in January, April and July and is beginning to
