Dear Parishioners, This week we begin the solemn season of Lent. On Ash Wednesday we receive the mark of ashes on our foreheads: a reminder of our humanity, our sinful- ness, and our dependence upon God's great mercy. As Ash Wednesday coin- cides with our secular Valentine's Day this year, someone jokingly remarked that we might impose the ashes in the shape of a heart this year. While I don't think we will pursue that, we should be reminded that the Lenten season is a time for us to reflect upon the depths of God's love for us -- and how we are called to love him in return. I encourage you to mark the Lenten season through some forms of prayer, fast- ing, and almsgiving. Prayer -- Maybe consider a daily Mass each week, sta- tions of the cross, an hour in the adoration chapel, or setting aside time for reading Sacred Scripture... Fasting -- Perhaps perform some act of self-denial, whether it is doing without some food or drink, or something else you enjoy like watching television... Almsgiving -- You might consider some sacrifice to the Bishop's Lenten Appeal, to Divine Mercy Outreach, or some other charity… Ash Wednesday, we will celebrate Masses according to the following schedule: 6:15 and 8:30am, 12:15, 4:30, and 7:30pm Ashes will be distributed DURING each of the Masses This Friday, will have our first Soup Supper of the Lenten Season, beginning at 6pm in the cafeteria. Enjoy a SACRIFICIAL meatless meal with your fellow pa- rishioners before heading over for Stations of the Cross in church at 7:30pm. Please note that parishioners are also welcome to join our school community for stations during the day each Friday of the Lenten season. This week, the sta- tions will begin at 10:30am, due to an early dismissal in the school day. (Most other weeks, the stations with the school will begin at 2:30pm.) I also want to recommend you consider signing up at BestLentEver.com/SignUp to receive daily emails with short inspira- tional videos, stories, and practical tips for your everyday life. This program, offered by Dynamic Catholic, will help you discover how to open your heart to God throughout the season. Let me know what you think! Help the Imprisoned Social Action Linking Together (SALT) urgently requests that parishioners consider helping prisoners in Solitary Confinement in Virginia prisons. The Catholic Bishops of the United States issued a statement entitled “Responsibility, Rehabilitation, and Restoration: A Catholic Perspective on Crime and Criminal Justice.” The bishops state: “We oppose the increas-ing use of isolation units, especially in the absence of due process, and the monitoring and professional assess-ment of the effects of such confine-ment on the mental health of in-mates.” Also, Pope Francis denounced Solitary Confinement, associating the practice with torture because of the “genuine surplus of pain that is added to the suffering of imprisonment.” Leg-islation currently before the Virginia House of Delegates, HOUSE BILL NO. 795 & Senate Bill SJ 65, written in the spirit of the statements by the Bishops & Pope Francis. This legislation calls for reducing the use of solitary con-finement and eliminating for the men-tally ill, practices considered torture by numerous religious leaders and health professionals. Ninety-four people were killed in the floods. Tens of thousands of people were displaced, and property damage was widespread. Our food supplied a lifeline to the families impacted, sup-plying them with a steady source of nutrition and comfort in a time of cri-sis. Thanks for being Christ's hands, St. Theresa! We have wonderful parishioners who would love to visit you! Maybe you need help with an errand or would like someone to pray with you- let our Visitation Ministry know. We are also looking to add to our list of volunteers to make visits. Please contact Clau-dia Lewis at 703.431.8670 or email her at [email protected]. If you would like to sign up to be placed on our Outreach email list you will learn about what we do and how you can become more involved in touching the lives of those in need. We’d love to get to know you too! If interested, contact Marianne Guidos 703.729.2334 or [email protected]
