“The kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
When Jesus winds up on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, He encounters several people who are
plying their trades, business as usual. He is already known as a preacher, taking up the cry of John
the Baptist, “Reform your lives! The reign of God is at hand.” But when He sees the fishermen,
He does not promise the kingdom or ask them to change their hearts. He just asks them to come
away from what they are doing, and to follow. And mesmerized by the person of Jesus – and
perhaps a little bored with fishing –they walk away as coolly and cleanly as if it were less than
their lives they were leaving behind.
Chances are they did not understand the whole of it. We seldom do whenever we answer God’s call. The willingness to cast
one’s lot with Jesus when He passes by is the grace that only disciples can know. The ones Jesus called who had excuses that day
are probably still fishing…

Celebrating Our Schools
Today we welcome Archbishop Joseph MacNeil Catholic
Elementary/Junior High School teachers, students and
parents to help us celebrate the 12pm Mass through their
involvement and participation in the liturgy through greeting,
reading, and processing with the gifts.
Archbishop Joseph MacNeil School is located in the
neighbourhood of Leger, a short walking distance east of our
parish! It’s mission: connecting its learning community through
creativity, inquiry, faith and love. Its vision: to be a community
of opportunity for all.
The school is named after Archbishop Joseph MacNeil, born in
Nova Scotia, ordained priest in 1948 and bishop in 1969. He
served as the Archbishop of Edmonton for 26 years from 1973
until his retirement. He believed that the Church had a credible
message for society and did not hesitate to speak to government
officials, the business world, academics and other community
leaders. These people sought out his wisdom and his views were
always well received because he was articulate, patient,
respectful and honest. Archbishop Joseph MacNeil is an
exemplary role model for students and for all who desire to be
authentic followers of Christ.
Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter, Motu proprio "Aperuit illis", published on September 30, 2019, establishes that "the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to
be devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God".
The timing of Sept. 30 is significant because it is the Feast day of St. Jerome, the patron of Bible scholars, a man who translated most of the Bible into Latin.
The title of the document, “Aperuit illis”, is taken from St. Luke’s Gospel (Luke 24:45), where the Evangelist describes how the Risen Jesus appeared to His disciples, and how “He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures”.
May we be encouraged to open our bibles, to read Your Word, and enlightened by the Holy Spirit to the gift of understanding.

As we pray for Christian Unity,
we suggest Saints of the Catholic Reformation to teach us
about those who led the Church from the confusion caused
by the Protestant Reformation. These saints show us how
powerful the response of the heart can be to God’s grace.
St Thomas More is one of these saints.

SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL
Our Society helps people in need on an emergency basis.
They could be anyone falling on hard times that might
need help to get by until their next paycheque, or to get
started in a home with no furniture or food or means to travel
to access these services. They may not know where to turn or
how to continue. Some families speak no English and need
someone to translate for them to understand their
needs. Most have children and some of these are on their
own after leaving an abusive relationship. Some have lost
their jobs or have an illness that makes it difficult to provide
for their families, or they are new immigrants or refugees.
Our members visit them in their homes to assess their needs
and provide support and help.
If you would like to make a donation to help one of our
needy families, or if you have furniture or household items
that you no longer need, please call 780-471-5577. If you
know of someone who needs help or want to learn more
about SSVP please visit our website at
www.ssvpedmonton.ca
You are welcome to attend our monthly
meetings at St. Thomas More Parish –
Our Lady of the Rosary Room (Chapter
Room) on the first Tuesday of each
month at 7pm (after the 6pm Mass).
