“The Kingdom of Heaven is like … ”
Jesus speaks of the Kingdom more than fifty times in Matthew’s Gospel.
The Kingdom is like a buried treasure, a fabulous pearl, a dragnet tangled with garbage and gifts from the sea. The
Kingdom is like wheat fields and weeds, and yeast and seeds... The Kingdom is glorious, powerful and yet
mysterious. The Kingdom has come, the kingdom is coming and the Kingdom is yet to come. The Kingdom of
God is among us and within us!

During this unique time in our spiritual journey,
many of us find that we have extra time on our hands. Why not
use some of this time for prayer? Enrich your prayer life by
watching one or more formed.org episodes on prayer
life. Suggestions include: Prayer an Intimate Dialogue,
Practicing Prayer with Jackie Francois, Prayer, and Prayer – A
surge of the Heart. Prayer is one of the most basic elements of a
life of faith, but it isn't always easy to do. Learn new ways of
raising your mind and heart to God.

St Thomas More’s New Southwest Parish Naming Survey
Archbishop Smith Invites You to Participate
Archbishop Smith has presented STM with the
opportunity to engage in the mission of the Church in a very
concrete way: to build a new church for the growing Catholic
community in southwest Edmonton.
What do you think would be the best name for the new
parish? His Grace has invited each of you to have input
to the naming of this new parish!
Our New Southwest Parish Naming Survey will run from
July 1 through to September 30. Details and a link to the e-
survey will be posted from July 1 on STM’s website and FB
page. Paper copies will also be available through the church
office.
For more information: https://new-parish-stthomasmore.ca/
Please note: the office will be closed on Monday, August 3rd, but Mass will be celebrated at 7pm.
Fr. Curtis Berube begins his pastoral ministry in our parish. We pray for him and
for all priests in our Archdiocese:
Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the gift of our
priests. Through them, we experience your presence in the
sacraments.
Help our priests to be strong in their vocation.
Set their souls on fire with love for your people.
Grant them the wisdom, understanding, and strength they
need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
Inspire them with the vision of your Kingdom.
Give them the words they need to spread the Gospel.
Allow them to experience joy in their ministry.
Help them to become instruments of your divine grace.
We ask this through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns as our
Eternal Priest.
Amen.

Sunday, August 2: 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time “His heart was moved with pity .”
Night approaches, and the crowd is
hungry. Who asked them to follow
Him out to this lonely place to begin
with? The disciples are all for
dismissing the lot of them to provide
for themselves. But Jesus says no, you feed them. It is easy
to produce excuses. I am tired of giving. I have done my
share. This need is beyond my resources. All we have to do
is begin somewhere, with compassion.
Sunday, August 9: 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Walking on the water in the midst of
the storm, Jesus calls to the disciples
and calms their fears. Faith in Jesus will
enable the disciples to do the work that
Jesus has done. Despite our fears and
doubts, our faith in Jesus will enable us
also to continue this work-we can
participate in the building of the kingdom of God. Like Peter,
we too can take comfort in the fact that it is to the faithful
one that Jesus delivers the keys to the kingdom.
Sunday, August 16: 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Woman of great faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.”
The woman in today’s Gospel does not go
away. Her plea is so humble, so persistent
and yet so firm that even the Son of God
cannot resist. As we approach the table of
the Lord today, let us with similar
faithfulness and trust come to Christ Jesus
for refreshment, sustenance and healing.
Even one crumb of His mercy is more than enough!

Twenty-one days of spiritual journey with prayers and
sacrifices - is the deliberate and intentional dedication to
focus on God and humbling oneself in the presence of
Almighty God. We do this with the same fervor and urgency
shown by the prophet Daniel for his people and nation.
Expecting a great manifestation of God’s power upon the
current pandemic, we lift our hands and hearts to the Lord
for supernatural breakthroughs in our lives and in the world.
I ate no savory food, took no meat or wine, and did not anoint myself at all until the end of the three weeks.
(Daniel 10:3)
Fr Roy Varghese Palatty, CMI (spiritual director, Shalom Media) will be leading this initiative.
Registration for this event is free.

Sunday, August 23: 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church.”
Jesus gives Peter the keys of the kingdom
of heaven. He chooses Peter as the rock on
which to build His Church and “the gates of
Hades will not prevail against it.” This
constant battle – between good and evil,
between angels and demons and between God and Satan –
for our souls is not an easy one and requires much prayer and
perseverance. In today’s Eucharistic celebration, let us give
thanks and praise for God’s protection of our Holy Catholic
Church and for our first pope, Saint Peter.
Sunday, August 30: 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time “You are not judging by God’s standards.”
Peter is not alone in his inability to grasp
the necessity of crucifixion. For the first
four centuries, many church heresies
dispelled the death of Jesus as a divine
mirage. No God would stand for such
treatment, having the power to prevent it.
Yet within our experience, we know
something that makes sense of this horror. We know that
love is willing to suffer for the sake of the beloved. If our
love can rise to such an act of courage, surely the love of
God was equal to the crucifixion.
