Christmas Greetings and Welcome The Rev. John Talbird

The Prelude

“What Is This Lovely Fragrance?” arr. Daniel Burton (b. 1944) String Quartet and Harp

Whence is that goodly fragrance flowing, stealing our senses all away? Never the like did come a blowing, shepherds, in flow’ry fields in May. What is that light so brilliant, breaking here in the night across our eyes? Never so bright, the day-star waking, started to climb the morning skies! Bethlehem! there in manger lying, find your Redeemer, haste away, run ye with eager footsteps hieing! Worship the Savior born today. Praise to the Lord of all creation, Glory to God the fount of grace; May peace abide in ev’ry nation, goodwill in all over ev’ry race.

When blossoms flowered ’mid the snows Upon a winter night, Was born the Child, the Christmas Rose, The King of Love and Light. The angels sang, the shepherds sang, The grateful earth rejoiced; And at His blessed birth the stars Their exultation voiced. O come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. Again the heart with rapture glows To greet the holy night, That gave the world its Christmas Rose, Its King of Love and Light. Let ev’ry voice acclaim His name, The grateful chorus swell. From paradise to earth He came That we with Him might dwell. Venite adoremus Domi-num. (Tr. from the Italian by Frederick H. Martens, 1874-1932)

Before the service: TALK to God. During the service: LISTEN to God. After the service: TALK to one another!

The prelude opens with an instrumental setting of a traditional French carol, Quelle est cette doeur agréable? “Fra-grance” is symbolic of the presence of the Christ. Lyrics have been provided for your meditation.

St. Luke describes the Annunciation when the angel Gabriel visits Mary to say that she will bear the Son of God. Immediately, Mary sets out to visit her cous-in Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist. Upon her arrival, she delivers what has be-come known as Mary’s song, the Magnificat. This is but a small frag-ment of Bach’s work on this canticle, but it con-tains the exuberant joy which Mary felt at this news.

The Solemn Proclamation of the Birth of Christ

Many ages after God created the heavens and the earth, when man and woman were formed in God’s own image;long after the great flood, when God set the rainbow in the clouds as a sign of the covenant;twenty-one centuries from the time of Abraham and Sarah;thirteen centuries after Moses led God’s people to freedom;eleven centuries from the time of Ruth and the judges;a thousand years from the anointing of David as king;in the sixty-fifth week as Daniel’s prophecy takes note;in the one hundred ninety-fourth Olympiad;the seven hundred fifty-second year from the founding of the city of Rome;in the forty-second year of the reign of Octavian Augustus;in the sixth age of the world, all earth being at peace,Jesus Christ, eternal God, Son of the eternal Father, willing to hallow the world by his coming in mercy, was born of the virgin Mary in Bethlehem of Judea.Today is the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, God made flesh.

Gathering Hymn “O Come, All Ye Faithful” Adeste fideles

The AcclamationPriest Alleluia. To us a child is born.People Come, let us adore him. Alleluia.

Collect for PurityAlmighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

At the outset of the New Testamant, the Gospel of Matthew opens with “An account of the ge-nealogy of Jesus the Messiah.” The Roman Martyrology for Christ-mas Day goes much fur-ther, containing a for-mal announcement of the birth of Christ in the style of a proclamation. It begins with creation and relates the birth of the Lord to the major events and personages of sacred and secular history. The particular events contained in the proclamation help to situate the birth of Jesus in the context of salva-tion history.

1. O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,

O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come, and behold him, born the King of

angels;

Refrain: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord.

2. God from God,Light from Light eternal,

lo! he abhors not the Virgin’s womb;only begotten Son of the Father;

Refrain

3. Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation,

sing, all ye citizens of heaven above;Glory to God, glory in the highest;

Refrain

4. Yea, Lord, we greet thee,born this happy morning;

Jesus, to thee be glory given;Word of the Father,

now in flesh appearing;

Hymn of Praise Gloria in excelsis Gloria

The Collect of the DayPriest The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Priest Let us pray.

O God, you have caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light: Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy him perfectly in heaven; where with you and the Holy Spirit he lives and reigns, one God, in glory ever-lasting. Amen.

All sitOld Testament Reading: Isaiah 9:2-7The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;those who lived in a land of deep darkness-- on them light has shined.You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before youas with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder.For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.For all the boots of the tramping warriors

This is one of the most popular French carol tunes, and is associated with “Angels We Have Heard on High” in our hymnal. The text we sing tonight conforms to the traditional Gloria in excelsis Deo, praising the Triune God.

Psalm 96 Es ist ein’ Ros’ entsprungenSung by all, seated.

Psalm 96 is a call to worship addressed to all of creation and all peoples. It extols God’s work of creation; God’s honor, majesty, might, and glory; and God’s righteous, faithful, and truthful rule. The praise of God is to be expressed not only by people but also by the heavens, the earth, the sea, rural landscapes, and trees. This para-phrase is set to a Ger-man carol tune from the Rhineland. The tune may have originated as early as the 14th or 15th centuries.

He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

Sequence Hymn “Joy to the World, The Lord is Come!” Antioch

The Holy Gospel: Luke 2:1-20

Clergy The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be regis-tered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,and on earth peace among those whom he favors!”When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying

The marriage of hymn text and tune is always an interesting study. With this hymn, the Episcopalians lost the contest! Since the 19th century, Isaac Watts’ text was married to Richmond (see Hymn 72), but, finally, with The Hymnal 1982, the Episcopal Church ad-opted Antioch, which was the match preferred by most other denom-inations. In this text, Isaac Watts (1674-1748) paraphrases Psalm 98 in the language of the New Testament. This tune may have appeared be-fore Handel wrote Mes-siah, but it opens with the same chords that begin the chorus “Lift Up Your Heads.”

1. Joy to the world, the Lord is come!Let earth receive her king;

let ev’ry heart prepare him roomand heav’n and nature sing,and heav’n and nature sing,

and heav’n and heav’n and nature sing.

2. Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!Let all their songs employ,

while fields and floods, rocks hills, and plainsrepeat the sounding joy,repeat the sounding joy,

repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

3. No more let sin and sorrow grownor thorns infest the ground;

he comes to make his blessings flowfar as the curse is found,far as the curse is found,

far as, far as the curse is found.

4. He rules the world with truth and graceand makes the nations prove

the glories of his righteousnessand wonders of his love,and wonders of his love,

and wonders, wonders of his love.

in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary trea-sured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

Sermon The Rev. John TalbirdSilence for reflection

All standThe Nicene Creed

Clergy begins,We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The people may stand or kneel.

Good people all, this Christmastime, Consider well and bear in mind What our good God for us has done, In sending his beloved Son. With humble hearts we all should pray To God with love this Christmas Day; In Bethlehem upon that morn There was a blessed Messiah born. With thankful heart and joyful mind, The shepherds went the babe to find, And as God’s angel had foretold, They did our Saviour Christ behold. (traditional English and Irish)

Incense gathers the people together as their prayers rise to God like smoke rising before us. The thurifer, bearing the incense, bows to the people to invite them into this gathering. The people bow in acceptance. After the thurifer censes the people and bows again, the people respond with a bow of thanks.

Then, facing the Holy Table, the Presider proceedsIt is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing

1. In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron,

water like a stone; snow had fallen, snow on snow,

snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter,

long ago.

2. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;

heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign: in the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed

the Lord God incarnate, Jesus Christ.

3. Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim

thronged the air; but his mother only, in her maiden bliss,

worshiped the beloved with a kiss.

4. What can I give him, poor as I am?

If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a wise man, I would do my part;

yet what I can I give him—give my heart.

The Presider continuesWe acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our dis-obedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation.Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new.

And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all.

When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remem-brance of me.”

Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you.

Presider and PeopleWe praise you, we bless you,we give thanks to you,and we pray to you, Lord our God.

PresiderLord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ.

Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name.

Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace.

And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, with Timothy, and all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Music During Communion

“Carol of the Birds” (a traditional Bas-Quercy carol) arr. DicieLaura Wilkerson, soprano, with Harp and Violin

Whence comes this rush of wings afar, following straight the Noel star? Birds of the woods in wond’rous flight Bethlehem seek this holy night. “Tell us, ye birds, why come ye here, into this stable, poor and dear?” “Hast’ning, we seek the newborn King, and all our sweetest music bring.” Angels in heaven, Birds of the sky, Come where the Song of God doth lie; Christ on earth with man doth dwell, Join in the shout, “Noel, Noel!”

“O Little Town of Bethlehem” St. LouisSung by all

1. O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by;

yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light;

the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

2. For Christ is born of Mary;and gathered all above,

while mortals sleep, the angels keeptheir watch of wondering love.

O morning stars, togetherproclaim the holy birth!

and praises sing to God the King,and peace to men on earth.

Though he was famed during his lifetime as a great preacher, no ser-mon Phillips Brooks ever preached has been heard or read by as many people as have sung this carol he wrote in December 1868 for the Sunday School chil-dren of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. The tune was composed specif-ically for this text by Louis Redner, organist and superintendent of the Sunday School at Trinity Church.

3. How silently, how silently,the wondrous gift is given!

So God imparts to human heartsthe blessings of his heaven.

No ear may hear his coming,but in this world of sin,

where meek souls will receive him,still the dear Christ enters in.

4. O holy Child of Bethlehem.descend to us, we pray;

cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angelsthe great glad tidings tell;

O come to us, a bide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

Like other material from oral traditions, 19th-century African American spirituals flourished without be-ing written down. Their refrains were their most stable parts, and narra-tive stanzas were often improvised to fit. These Nativity stanzas attempt to recall that tradition.

Welcome to St. Timothy’s!

We are happy to have you with us today. If you are visiting, please complete the guest card found in the pew rack or on the wel-come table in the entrance hall; place it

in the offering plate or give it to an usher. Please make yourself known to us so that we

may welcome you.

You are invited to explore, ask questions, and attend classes, study groups, or any oth-

er gatherings here at St. Timothy’s.

To help you feel more at home here, we offer these notes about our service.

+ The hymns and service music are found in The Hymnal (blue book) in the pew racks.

An “S” before a hymn number indicates ser-vice music found at the front of The Hymnal.

+ The Book of Common Prayer (red book), also in the pew racks, contains the form of

the service.

+ All people are invited and encouraged to receive Communion at this altar. At the time

of Communion, please come forward and receive the bread in the palm of your hand; assist the minister by guiding the chalice to

your lips.

+ Hearing devices are available, please ask an usher for assistance.
