ADDED VALUE OF THE BUILDING MATERIAL MERCHANT
Organized in collaboration
with
I am delighted to welcome you to the Ufemat Annual General Meeting and Annual Conference.
Every year this unique event brings together professionals from every sector of the building materials supply chain and from every corner of Europe to share ideas and best practice to take back to our own markets. I am looking forward to learning more about the opportunities arising from Digital Disruption; to discover ways to minimise packaging waste to comply with the latest environmental legislation; and to find out how 3D-modelling is helping in the development of new building materials facilities.
It is also a pleasure to host my first AGM as Ufemat President in the stunning lakeside resort of Montreux. The town has its very own microclimate protected by the surrounding mountains. We will have an opportunity to sample both the Lavaux wines, from vineyards that are themselves a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Switzerland’s famous Gruyère cheese in the mountains, as well as time to admire the magnificent views.
Lake Geneva, or Lac Leman, has inspired artists, writers and musicians since the 19th century when the poets Byron and Shelley frequented the town. In the 1970s, Deep Purple’s iconic song Smoke on the Water was created here after witnessing Montreux Casino burn down during a concert by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.
While we don’t anticipate such drama this weekend, we are looking forward to a fantastic conference, with many opportunities to network with colleagues across Europe. On a personal level, I am extremely pleased at the number of delegates from the UK joining us this weekend. Whatever decisions are taken by our political representatives at Westminster at the end of the month, the UK building materials industry remains committed to Europe and co-operation with our peers across the continent. I look forward to speaking with many of you during the weekend.
Finally, I would like to extend my thanks to all the sponsors who have made this event possible.
John Newcomb, President, UFEMATChief Executive Officer, BMF

INTRODUCTION
To bring together Top Building Material Professionals every year in a beautiful European city,
put forward relevant themes and visit Merchants and Producers is my ambition every year. I am
pleased that we succeeded once again this year.
Montreux is the perfect decorum for our annual get-together and we have a splendid program.
We are very happy to see you once more and hope you will enjoy both professional and informal
activities.
Thanks to the sponsors, who helped a lot making everything possible.
For the first time in the history of Ufemat we chose a charity to support; we hope for generous
donations towards the UNICEF school building project at Ivory Coast.
Enjoy Montreux!

At the age of 31, while he was director of the Tourism Office of Montreux, he organized the first jazz festival featuring artists such as Charles Lloyd, Keith Jarrett, Ron McLure and Jack DeJohnette. This new festival was an immediate success, and gained a reputation far beyond Switzerland. Nobs quickly transformed his festival into an international gathering place for lovers of jazz.
In 1971, Deep Purple decided to produce and record their album Machine Head in Montreux. The group was also scheduled to record at the Montreux Casino, shortly after Frank Zappa performed. During Zappa’s concert, the venue caught fire and reduced the Casino to ashes. Nobs saved several young people who had hidden in the casino, thinking they would be sheltered from the flames. Nobs, who had served as a volunteer fireman, knew that the casino was not actually a safe place and acted immediately to get them out.
This act earned him a mention (in the line Funky Claude was running in and out pulling kids out the ground) in the song “Smoke on the Water”, which is about the incident. Also, on the inner liner of the original album, Nobs’ picture was the only one labeled with a name other than those of the band members themselves.

MISSION OF THE UFEMAT ORGANIZATIONFOUNDING UFEMAT was founded in 1958 by some European countries in the slipstream of the treaty of Rome and the creation of the EEC, European Economic Community.
The founders believed that Europe was going to be an important factor in the day-to-day business of the manufacturing and sale of Building Materials. They endorsed the creation of one global European market in which a free flow of products and services would be established alongside the installment of the European legislation regarding these business opportunities.
The founding fathers believed that in order to be proactive, a European body of lobbying with the European Commission was highly desirable to defend the interests of the European Building Materials trade and industry.
CONCLUSIONIn accordance with this, a strong UFEMAT representing all European countries should be a reality. The more countries and different industries UFEMAT can represent, the louder our voice will be heard by the European Commission.
In recent years UFEMAT has developed a clear profile to the European Commission and the European Parliament and we wish to develop that further.
OBJECTIVESLooking back nearly 60 years later, we must conclude that those objectives have been most important in the development in the last decades.
European legislation concerning Building Materials has been developed for: • Packaging • Transport • Harmonized standards • Handling • Security • Energy efficiency • Market regulation • Publicity • Etc.
In all those cases the work and involvement of a European lobbying organization such as UFEMAT is very important. Without UFEMAT, other parties would impose their desires and wishes concerning the distribution of Building Materials which would not be a good thing.
Trade & Industry. Moreover, within UFEMAT we are convinced of the necessity of a harmonized relation between manufacturers and distributors of Building Materials, because there is a mutual objective of interests of both parties.

Founded in 1937 in Milan, Mapei is today one of the most important producers of
adhesives and complementary products for laying all types of floor and wall and
coating materials and is also specialised in other chemical products used in the
building industry, such as waterproofing products, special mortars, admixtures
for concrete, products for underground constructions and for the restoration of
concrete and historical buildings.
Mapei has always put sustainability at the very heart of its production and
commercial process and, apart from promoting and strengthening the values and
objectives of the Company, it is a concept that has a multitude of different facets.
RESEARCH AND INNOVATION ALONGSIDE OUR CLIENTS TO CONSTRUCT
EFFECTIVE, SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS.
Behind every Mapei product and solution there is an intense Research and Development
(R&D) work. Research activities are managed and carried out by the Mapei S.p.A.
Research Centre in Milan which coordinates all the other research laboratories located
around the world.
R&D work enables Mapei to create sustainable products: quality products that remain
durable over the years, which are safe for those who apply them and for those who use the
areas where they have been applied and that have been developed to reduce their impact on
the environment.
AN EFFICIENT PRODUCTION SYSTEM THAT RESPECTS THE SURROUNDING
TERRITORY AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
For a company like Mapei, sustainability can never overlook the adoption of responsible
management criteria for the entire production system: from the acquisition and
consumption of raw materials to the disposal of waste materials and products. For
Mapei, guaranteeing sustained production means, on the one hand, ensuring the
efficiency of manufacturing processes by carrying out timely, constant quality control
on its products, and on the other hand by adopting responsible management criteria
to monitor its impact on the environment and to safeguard the health and safety of its
employees and the surrounding area.

CONSTANT INVESTMENT IN PEOPLE TO HELP GROW TOGETHER.
People are the real driving force behind the growth of Mapei: if there were no group
spirit, cohesion or the desire to constantly improve oneself, there would never be
the new ideas and solutions that allow Mapei to adapt to the ever-changing needs
of its stakeholders and to branch out, slowly but surely, into new countries and new
markets. Mapei invests in the skill and intuition of everyone who joins the Company
and constantly remains by their side during their professional growth.
TRADITION AND EXCELLENCE AT THE SERVICE OF THE COMMUNITY.
Mapei is fully aware of its importance in generating value for the surrounding territory
and of its active role in the life of local communities and has always been committed
to the support of local activities through sponsorships, mainly in the fields of sport
and culture, and through donations to help sustain local communities. The common
denominator of the numerous activities that come to life thanks to Mapei’s support is
that they are all characterised by the search for excellence and the desire to preserve
local traditions.
Indoor GenerationResearch shows that the average person spends approximately 90% of their time
indoors with limited access to daylight, and where the air can be up to five times
more polluted than outside. In urban and suburban areas, the quest for high energy-
efficiency standards leads to the construction of increasingly water- and airtight
buildings that limit air exchange with the environment outside.
Poor air quality, as well as lack of daylight, in indoor environments is associated
with costly health problems, like asthma, respiratory disease, heart disease and
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This may have an impact on learning abilities,
productivity and health.
To improve indoor climates in households, workplaces, schools and municipal buildings,
we need solutions that provide access to daylight and improve air quality indoors,
where current and future generations live, sleep, work, play, and learn.
Daylight and fresh airFor more than 75 years, VELUX solutions have offered daylight and fresh air for the
health and wellbeing of people and buildings.

PLATINUM SPONSOR:
Circular packaging is no longer an option, but an
economic and sustainable necessity for companies
with a vision of the future.
Until 2017, very large quantities of packaging waste
went to the Far East for recycling. Due to fraudulent
practices in the region, one country after another
prohibits the import of these waste streams. In our
region, there is insufficient recycling capacity to absorb
these waste streams. Europe urgently asks companies
to recycle their packaging waste in Europe.
Recycling in Europe is possible, provided that:
- A demand comes for the recycled raw material
-There is a sufficient quality of foil waste
- The value of the foil material in the material chain
can be maintained as high as possible to make the
collection, recycling and processing of this material
flow economically profitable.
In Belgium the basis for good practice was already laid
in 2005 by Fema and Valipac. In that year, a system
was started up whereby film waste from packaging
on construction sites can be returned by the building
contractor to a merchant of building materials. A
success, 135,000 bags filled with foil waste are
returned every year to be recycled.
However, the world of plastic film waste has changed
completely since 2018 with the closure of the Chinese
borders for plastic waste, and so have the rules.
This year Valipac has demonstrated in project with
Wienerberger, Total, Rymoplast (recycler), Oerlemans
Packaging, Fema and the waste collectors that the
circular story works and is also economically correct.
This team has succeeded in turning plastic waste
from packaging on construction sites into new, equally
high-quality shrink hoods for pallets with bricks
of Wienerberger. As a result of this demonstration
project, the next challenge is to convince as many
building material manufacturers as possible to use
these circular packaging and thus develop a European
recycling industry for plastic films.
Together we make the packaging of building
materials circular.

Originally introduced in October 1997, the JCB Teletruk remains the world’s only telescopic lift truck and offers users the benefit of forward reach thanks to its telescopic boom. It has become the machine of choice for builders merchants yards in the UK over the past 20 years.
Until now JCB’s Teletruks have been powered by diesel and LPG and used predominantly in outdoor applications. With the launch of the new electric model, the Teletruk now becomes suited for a wealth of tasks inside buildings as well as outside – offering a new generation of customers the cost and space saving advantages enjoyed by users over the past two decades.
JCB’s new JCB 30-19E is the first electric powered model in Teletruk range - and opens up new opportunities for a machine which has revolutionised operations in builders merchants, ports, recycling centres and industrial facilities around the world. Already in operation at countless supply chain and manufacturing facilities across the world, the Teletruk is the ideal choice of lift truck at sites where containers, curtainsided trailers, vans and other delivery vehicles have to be loaded and unloaded quickly, safely and efficiently. Because it is battery-powered, the JCB 30-19E is supremely quiet and produces zero emissions - making it suited to tasks inside a building, while its fully sealed, weather-proof body protects the machine’s driveline and other key components from the elements when the Teletruk is required to work in the yard.
Power is provided by an 80-volt lead acid battery which can work a full eight hour shift on a single charge. The battery compartment is positioned at the rear of the truck and has been designed to allow quick and easy battery changeover. Using a single point hoist or another lift truck, the battery can be swapped in around 2 minutes - ensuring truck uptime is maximised.
Thanks to its electric driveline, the new JCB Teletruk can climb a 21% gradient or ramp with ease and productivity is further enhanced with full free lift of 1575 mm as standard. Like all Teletruk models, the JCB 30-19E features a side-mounted boom and using the unique telescopic forward reach, it has a lift capacity of 1900 kg at 2 metres, meaning palletised loads can be loaded to the far side of a curtainsided trailer. In addition, the forward reach functionality eliminates the risk of material and vehicle damage - as well as the potential for injury to personnel – when loading or unloading pallets to and from light goods vehicles, especially vans. The Teletruk can place a 1600 kg load 3 metres into a commercial vehicle.
For ultimate efficiency, the Teletruk can load three Euro pallets into a van easily and safely within two minutes. Safety also comes as standard as all machines are fitted with Load Motion Control. This patented JCB innovation alerts the operator when reaching full lift or reach capacity with a simple green, amber, red light system and will not allow a load to be used outside of the load capabilities of the machine, aiding the prevention of forward tip.
The JCB 30-19E features the JCB ‘Command Plus’ cab, which has been designed to ensure that the operator remains comfortable and, therefore, productive, throughout the course of his or her working day. The cab is just 2.2 metres high, allowing the 30-19E to operate within the height constraints of shipping containers. It is spacious and clutter-free with all hydraulic functions, as well as direction and speed of travel, controlled via a single joystick, which offers easier and safer operation. Additionally, important truck performance information such as battery life, speed and Load Motion Control is relayed to the operator via an easy-to-read electronic display positioned at eye level.
The JCB 30-19E Teletruk’s ability to operate both inside and outside a building brings a number of benefits to the user. For example,
working inside a building, the JCB 30-19E can enter a container that has been reversed into a sealed loading dock and use its telescopic boom to safely stuff and de-stuff loads far more time – and space - efficiently than is possible with a conventional counterbalanced forklift or stacker. This increases utilisation of vehicles, aisle trucks and goods in/out infrastructure. And, when working in the yard, the JCB 30-19E has the ability to access curtainsided trailers from only one side. Using the JCB 30-19E to pick or pack pallets from one side only means that a curtainsider requires just six metres width of space within which to be loaded or unloaded. So, trailers can be parked tight to a wall or other form of perimeter boundary – leaving valuable space free in the central yard area for additional storage, extra delivery vehicles or for tasks such as cross docking. In fact, customers can save 70 m2 of space per truck with single side loading. In addition, a total of eight minutes can be saved on opening and closing truck curtains per load.
In addition the JCB Teletruk has a 360° field of vision around the machine and to the attachment as well as a unique 111 degrees of carriage rotation, making the handling of goods easier and safer. The small footprint of the machine enables it to turn within its own axis for even greater versatility.

DEBATE
Joe LYNAM, BBC PresenterHost & Conference Moderator
Joe Lynam, Irish journalist working for the BBC in the United Kingdom. He was the relief business presenter on BBC’s flagship Today Programme, and travelled to Cyprus, Spain, Belgium, Italy and Ireland to cover the sense of fear in many Eurozone countries.
Neil Mc Millan, Director Political Affairs & Trade - EuroCommerce“Wholesalers issues”
I’d be very happy to share with your members the scope of what EuroCommerce does for the wholesale and retail sector, and some of the issues we are expecting to face with the new Commission from November.
Jan JANSE, President ETIM-International“Digital Standards”
We need global standards to share product information throughout the value chain. And in this era of Digitization and Machine Learning we need even more strict standards to let algorithms and rules do the work. That is why we need ETIM, the standard format to share product data.Learn more about how ETIM can support your business.
Klaus PAAL, Managing Director intraPlan“How to build a new Builders’ Merchant Site”
For over 20 years intraPLAN has stood for conceptual planning in the building materials trade. As managing director I advise owners in the area of location planning with future-oriented logistics solutions. In addition to new construction and conversion planning, this can also include extensions or detailed logistical planning.
In my presentation, I will use the example of Materiaux PLUS SA to show how optimal logistical planning, in close cooperation with the customer, has resulted in a sustainable building material business.
Karel GEMMEKE, Director Innovation – VAL-I-PAC“Circular Packaging”
Circular packaging, an economic and sustainable necessity for companies with a vision of the future. Until 2017, very large quantities of packaging waste went to the Far East for recycling.Due to fraudulent practices in the region, one country after another prohibits the import of these waste streams.
This year Valipac has demonstrated in a project with Wienerberger, Total, Rymoplast (recycler), Oerlemans Packaging, Fema and the waste collectors that the circular story works and is also economically viable. This team has succeeded in turning plastic waste from packaging on construction sites into new, equally high-quality shrink hoods for pallets with bricks of Wienerberger. As a result of this demonstration project, the next challenge is to convince as many building material manufacturers as possible to use this circular packaging and thus develop a European recycling industry for plastic films.
The format of this years’ conference is an interactive formula, starting with relevant
Swiss testimonials regarding themes known to all professionals in our field:
- Digital Disruption & Standards
- Packaging Building Materials
- How to build a new Building Materials site
We asked 3 European artists to make a specific visual to offer as a special gift
to the Award entries in Montreux.
RAPHAELA (Germany): https://raphaelabuder.blogspot.com/ made for Ufemat
“Urban Gardening” and “The Recycling Age”, futuristic vision of recycling ...
SIMON (Switzerland): http://www.simontschopp.ch/people.htm, well known for his
“Farinet” drawings, made for us three beautiful illustrations focusing on domestic
recycling and consequent use in housebuilding.
BEST PRACTICE AWARD
XAVIER COSTE (France): https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xavier_Coste, well
known for his album “A comme Eiffel”, made for the Award Winnner a full
size gouache drawing of Lake Geneva (also present in his “Eiffel” album).

sings for Mapei
It was a tribute to a true symbol of the melodious song(from the 50’s to the present day) and at the same timea precious occasion for the hundreds of guests invited:
the concert of Paul Anka, the unforgettable Americanstar, was the clou event organized by Mapei on theoccasion of Cersaie 2003. The artist that made more thanone generation dream with his songs, performed in Italyafter an absence of 25 years, thanks to a long-timefriendship with the Squinzi family that had wanted togive their guests this special occasion. The concert that took place on Thursday, 2 October, at theEuropauditorium (at the Palazzo dei Congressi diBolognafiere) presented by Susanna Messaggio beforemore than 1,200 guests was a huge success, covered indetail by the press on the following days.A very involving performance, that gave great emotionsto all the guests present. Helped by the warmatmosphere, the enthusiasm of the public, the agelessvitality of a true stage professional (in addition to theking of song), the evening took off immediately andclosed with applause in series for the artist and for theorganization.Unforgettable the performance of “My Way”, a song thatwas also among the most beautiful performed by FrankSinatra. And as a tribute to the guests he sang a particularversion, paraphrasing the famous refrain with a newrhyme “….My way is… Mapei!”, with the publicentertained and enthusiastic, in the climate ofinvolvement that those notes were capable of provoking.Everyone standing, then, to applaud him while LauraPausini – special guest of the evening in private form for
The king of melodious songs performed in ashow that Mapei offered its customers on theoccasion of Cersaie.
