THE MISSION OF SAINT JULIA PARISH

We, the parishioners of Saint Julia Parish, seek to live our belief in Christ as we worship and serve Him according

to His example and teachings. With appreciation of the diverse gifts of our individual members, we strive to gain

the participation of each parishioner and work to ensure that everyone feels welcome in our community of faithful.

We do this while mindful of God’s love for us and the power of His Spirit that makes us holy, heals our brokenness

and sustains us in all the good we do. We are committed in the spirit of Chris an stewardship to share generously

our time, talent, and treasure.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

GOSPEL REFLECTION

"In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius

Caesar...and Herod was tetrarch of

Galilee...and Lysanias was tetrach of?" Did you

need to pinch yourself awake during the first

few lines of this Sunday's Gospel? John the

Baptist received quite a prelude today as Luke

described the religious and political leadership

of the time period. Scripture is divinely

inspired, and we believe that everything that

made it into the Bible is there for a reason.

These lines remind us of an important truth.

The Christmas story isn't a fairy tale or nursery

rhyme. It's not a parable we say to give

meaning to the holiday. At Christmas, God's

presence is made tangible in a precise moment

in time. The birth of Christ is a historical event.

As precursor to Jesus' preaching, the ministry

of John the Baptist is also a historical event.

"Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his

paths." John's call to repentance and the

forgiveness of sins happened in a particular

time and place. But that does not mean it is

limited to first century Palestine! God

continues to move in our daily lives. What we

hear in today's Gospel - and what we anticipate

at Christmas - occurs in our daily lives. God

works in concrete ways in time and space. He

did that 2,000 years ago, and He continues to

do so today!

This Sunday, examine your own Christmas

preparations. Is there anything you need to

repent of before the Christmas season? Are

there low points in your life, valleys to "be

filled" by the love of God? Are their

mountainous obstacles in your spiritual life?

How can they be "made low"? Are you making

decisions that have moved you away from God?

This Advent season is the time for them to "be

made straight and ? made smooth." Prepare

the way in your heart for Christ today!

First Reading: The LORD, your God, is in your

midst, a mighty savior. (Zep 3:17a)

Psalm: Cry out with joy and gladness, for among

you is the great and Holy One of Israel. (Is 12:2-3,

4, 5-6)

Second Reading: Have no anxiety at all, but in eve-

rything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,

make your requests known to God. (Phil 4:6)

Gospel: John answered them all, saying,

"I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier

than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the

thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the

Holy Spirit and fire." (Lk 3:16)

LIVE THE LITURGY

Making straight the path of Christ is not only

the vocation of John the Baptist but of every

baptized believer. God desires to lead us with

His mercy and justice. These are essentials in

God's kingdom and some of the gifts Christ's

future coming will bring. But our world's sys-

tems do not place emphasis on these values.

Wanting greater profits, downsizing companies

in order to reduce expenses, using others for

personal or corporate gain, and valuing institu-

tions over people are just a few of the "values"

we encounter every day. We are called to

straighten the path to Christ. In a world that

places value on things that are counter to our

call, how do we respond? We need to learn to

discern what is of real value and then take the

risk of bringing it into the marketplace.

A NEW SOCIAL OUTREACH

OPPORTUNITY

St. Julia Parish is entering into a church

-partnering program with NPH USA.

NPH USA (originally Friends of Our Little

Brothers) provides direct assistance to

Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos which ful-

ly supports over 6,200 orphaned, aban-

doned and disadvantaged children in

nine countries and has outreach pro-

grams for the surrounding communities.

There are NPH homes in nine countries:

Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Guate-

mala, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras,

Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru.

The children who find their way to NPH

have been orphaned, abused, shuffled

from one family member to another. Like

all children, they are seeking love and

security, a place they can call home.

When they come to NPH, they are told

they will never be asked to leave. The

children grow and learn in their culture

and language and become contributing

citizens in their own countries. Also,

many children arrive with several broth-

ers and sisters; NPH promises to keep

them together as a family.

In the coming weeks, we will continue to

provide information about our partner-

ing program. Stay tuned.

workshop.

December 15: Grade 2 First Penance Service,

Did you know… that John the

Baptist was the cousin of Je-

sus? John’s mother, Elizabeth

and Jesus’ mother, Mary, were

cousins. We don’t know if Je-

sus and John spent much time

together growing up, but we do

know that John recognized Je-

sus when he saw him when Jesus asked John

to baptize him.

In today’s Gospel, we hear how John

spent time in the desert, baptizing people in

the Jordan River, preparing them for the for-

giveness of sins. He knew that the Messiah,

the Christ, was about to start his ministry of

healing, feeding, and forgiving people. The

prophet Isaiah told us that someone was going

to “Prepare the way of the Lord”. That was

Saint John the Baptist! John’s job was to pre-

pare the people so that the people who had lis-

tened to John would watch for and welcome

the Messiah when he came. In Advent, we re-

member how the people waited for Jesus to

show them how to live holy and peaceful lives.

We are to spend this week thinking about how

ready we are for when Jesus comes to us.

How ready are you?

YOUTH MINISTRY

There is a special Mass this weekend with

Bishop Reed in Wayland ( December 9th,

7.30pm) for all teenagers and especially those

who are preparing for Confirmation in the

spring. For students who may have missed a

class and would prefer this to making up the

academic work - please see or e-mail Colm

We are very excited about the retreat this

coming Saturday and we will meet in the

Parish Center at 9.45am. Permission slips can

be signed then if necessary. Thanks to those

parents who said they could help with driving

to St Zepherin's in Wayland.

We will return to the Parish center around

3.30pm but the retreat officially ends after

4pm Mass The students are asked to sit

together at the front and of course that would

be a great Mass for their families to attend as

well.

7th and 8th grade students will be getting

together after Mass on Saturday the 15th for

an Archery and Pizza event upstairs in the

Parish center. "On the Mark Archery" will set

up nets and have waiver forms available for

all. Family members welcome. (5pm - 7pm).
