Today we celebrate Pentecost Sunday. Pentecost is called the birthday of the Church. We should have a great big cake with lots of candles today, because it is always a happy birthday.

Christians are optimists, and the Spirit is the reason for our optimism because the Spirit makes good things happen even when we cannot:

The Holy Spirit came upon a young peasant girl in Naza-reth, and she became the mother of God.

The Holy Spirit came upon a small undistinguished group of people who followed Jesus, and they became the Church.

The Holy Spirit comes upon bread and wine, and they become the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit comes upon those who are baptized and con-firmed, and they become daughters and sons of God.

Mary summed up our optimism after the Spirit came upon her. She didn’t say, “See what great things I do.” She said, “God who is mighty has done great things for me.” No matter what is done to me, no matter how helpless and hopeless I feel, the Spirit can always make good things happen, even when I cannot. Especially when I cannot.

“God who is mighty has done great things for me!”

Renowned speaker and author Fr. Michael Gaitley tells the dramatic history of God’s love and mercy as interwoven through the transforma-tive message of St. Faustina, the miraculous appearance of Mary at

Fatima, the witness of Maximilian Kolbe, and the world-changing papacy of Pope St. John Paul II. Featuring the bril-liant cinematic artistry of the Augustine Institute’s film studio, the vast panorama of God’s work of mercy in the world un-folds as a story to be experienced.

Catholics Returning Home Program

A summer session of the program will begin on Sunday, June 24, and continue July 1, 8, 15, 22, and

29 at 2 - 3:30 pm in the Social Hall. This program offers an opportunity for those who have been away from the Church to renew their Faith and learn how

the Church has changed over the years. For more in-formation or to attend, please call Deacon Dan Pallo

at 391-9338.

WHY MASS IS CELEBRATED ON SUNDAY The earliest disciples were Jewish and they practiced the Jewish religion. It was only after they had fully observed the Sabbath and the Sabbath was over, that these Christians gathered to celebrate their special belief that Jesus was the Messiah and the Son of God. Late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, they came together to celebrate what Je-sus did on the night before he died—the Eucharist. That is how it came to be that Christians have celebrated Eucharist on Sunday. ® Little White Book 2017 Diocese of Saginaw

Come, O Holy Spirit come! From your celestial home shed a ray of light divine!

Heal our wounds, our strength renew; Wash the stains of guilt away. Amen.

Our Mother of Mercy Outreach Services

The celebration of Pentecost brings joy to our church and the faithful. We ask the Holy Spirit to come into our hearts, heal our wounds, renew our strength and guide our souls to salvation. Christ said, “The Spirit will guide you to the truth.” The fruit of the Spirit, according to St. Paul, is love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, kindness, faithfulness, meekness, and self-control.

Many people, that we encounter, practice these gifts in their lives. They have joy because they pray and give time and treasure to the poor. When giving to the poor, donat-ing food, and volunteering at the church store, we practice generosity and kindness. Our volunteers do a fantastic job by being patient and using self-control when working with the disenfranchised in the community. When helping a person who needed a kind word, prayer, food, and finan-cial assistance, volunteers receive the gifts of joy and peace.

Embrace the Holy Spirit in your mission on earth. Mary embraced God’s will by saying yes to God by becoming the mother of Jesus. Mary shared His love in her lifetime and in her visits to the faithful. Mary appeared to Juan Di-ego in Mexico City, imprinting the image on the Holy Til-ma. That year, five million Indians came to the Catholic Church and miracles have been accredited to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The Irish, who have suffered famine, and oppression, were encouraged when Our Blessed Mother appeared to a group of villagers in 1879 in Knock, Ireland.

Messages from Mary, and reading the Bible, give us the inspiration to pray and be joyous in the Lord. Prayer, kindness, patience, and faithfulness will lead us and the world in Peace. Our church and the faithful need the light of the Holy Spirit.

Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
