Deacon’s Thoughts We profess our faith when we say “I Believe” and we
affirm that faith when we say “Amen”, so let our “I
Believe” and “Amen” be always with joy,
thankfulness,
love and compassion.
When we receive the Eucharist, this awesome gift from
God that no one else has, let our AMEN truly mean
that we BELIEVE who Jesus is and we are committed
in building a relationship with Him, so that we will
never hear the words “'I do not know where you are
from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!'

40 DAYS FOR LIFE
The 40 Days for Life is a campaign of prayer and
fasting for an end to abortion here in America, from
September 25 to November 3. Since its inception in
2007, 16,004 babies have been saved, 191 abortion
workers have quit, and 104 abortion centers have
closed. 40 Days for Life also involves prayerful,
peaceful witnessing in front of an abortion
clinic. People are being asked to simply stand (or
walk) and say the Rosary or other prayers for one
hour. Here in Monmouth, the site is the Planned
Parenthood facility at 69 E. Newman Springs Rd in
Shrewsbury. We have been asked to staff each
Wednesday from September 25 to November 3. That
would be 6 Wednesdays, Sep 25, Oct 2, 9, 16, 24, and
30. The hours are from 8 AM to 6 PM. Please
see the 40 Days for Life web
site http://40daysforlife.com/Shrewsbury for a wealth
of information. Please consider joining in this life
saving effort for just one hour on one or more
Wednesdays. Please give Hu or Joan Mador a call at
732-367-2565, or send us an email
at [email protected] . Thank you.
Luke: 13:22-30
I read a story a while ago which you may have also
read before, but I would like to share it with you in light
of today’s Gospel.
A young Catholic Priest (or Deacon) had a desire to be-
come a monk and decided to enter a monastery. He
joined one particularly strict sect where they had a vow
of silence. The head monk told him, at his indoctrina-
tion, that they were sworn to total silence. They could
not speak one word at any time. However, every ten
years, they would be permitted to speak two words.
After 10 years of total silence, the head monk indicat-
ed it was now time for him to speak his two words. The
new monk said, “Bed hard!” And then he obediently
resumed his silent study and work at the monastery.
After another 10 years passed, the head monk once
again indicated it was time for him to speak his two
words. The young monk said, “Food bad!” And then he
resumed his silent study and work once again. And
again another 10 years passed and the head monk
again indicated to the young monk that it was time for
him to speak his two words. The monk said, “I quit!”
The head monk shook his head and said, “I knew this
was coming. You’ve done nothing but complain for the
past 30 years!”
The young Priest (or Deacon) had spent thirty years in
the monastery, immersed in the Scriptures, listening
and studying Jesus’ teachings, attending liturgies and
most importantly receiving the Eucharist, eating and
drinking Jesus’ body and blood, and yet somehow still
missed the point of the meaning of entering through
the narrow gate. As often as it can happen to us, his
interests were not in things associated with the king-
dom that Jesus speaks about, but rather in those
worldly things that mattered to him and often to us too.
By placing his needs first, he failed to see the value of
the commitment of building a relationship with the
Lord.
The story of the young Priest (or Deacon) can remind
us of our own attitude towards God’s love for us and
how it can distract us from its true importance.
It reminds us that God’s love, kindness and fidelity are
poured out to all of us.
If we intend to proclaim the Good News of the Gospel
to the entire world, we need to be an example and wit-
ness to the Gospel. Our attitude, actions and thoughts
should be aligned with Christ, proclaiming the stead-
fast kindness and fidelity of our Lord.
